compressors decrease the volume of louder parts of the sound and increases the volume of the quiter parts of the sound. by doing this the overall volume that the ear hears is increased, even though the actual volume in db is reduced so you can squeeze more sounds into the mix without clipping. if you have a compressor that has a graph showing you how much volume is being reduced aim for about -2 to -4 db otherwise it sounds horrible. i generally put a compessor on everything but for different sounds eg bass drum and synth you have to alter the attack and decay of the compressor to fit the attact and decay of the sound your wanting to compress. Overall comression gives the sound a lift and makes it louder without actually being so. ill show you how to use it if you want, but ill give you a call at the weekend anyway.
