a alternative book press once said they'd publish my brother's manuscript, but it transpired it was gonna cost him too. does stuff like that happen in the music industry?

you mean like demos? yeah it's worth it sometimes. i sent some tunes to a pretty well known chicago dj without even intending him to consider them for release, just to listen to. he got in touch and 9 tracks off that tape were released on 2 different chicago labels, and off the back of that i started my own 2 labels and got a distribution deal. also a friend of mine just got asked to release on one of my favourite techno labels after sending a demo.

it can work, as long as you hit the right people with the right tracks.

i also sent a demo cd and a promo copy to C. Vogel, but i never got any response. maybe even it does not arrived, don´t know...

any reply, whether its crap or not, would be cool for every artist who send demos out, at least these which are good but doesn´t fits really to the label style or so...
okay, some labels gets hundreds of cd´s a week...thats a different story

it's hard to say how many tracks you should submit. again, i would always tailor the demo to the recipient - asking their preferances doesn't hurt. one guy i once sent a demo to refused to listen to it cos it was a whole 90 minute tape (this was back in the dark ages) of tracks...he wanted me to send him an ep of tracks, no more. wheras the story i described above re: the chicago fluke was just that, a full 90min tape...i got two eps out of that tape...which wasn't even strictly meant as a demo.

okay.. I must reply on this topic

I also send out demoes. It´s your only chance to get something released. I actually got spotted from MP3.com by diego (now active producer on kanzleramt) who offered me a 2x12" release. Unfortunately he couldn´t make it. But he knew Stefan Riesen from Phont music. He got my demo and vupti - my first release at SuperBra was served. Stefan knew Rob Jarvis From Pro-Jex. Another demo was sent that way - and vupti; Prox020 was served!
At that time I was more than happy and amazed how "easy" it actually was to get in contact with the labels. So I hit the biggest and perhaps the most wellknown techlabel DjaxUpBeats with a democd.
But I got no answer...
Until 6 month later.
Saskia wrote me a nice letter in which she said she was sorry not to get back to me before now, but she just lost her father so things have been pretty messed. Understandable!!!!
She just wanted to tell me she loved the demoCD and offered me 3 releases on Djax!!
I was blown away for weeks!
(that means I still have 1 release to make??? hmmm)
Jup the story goes on... more demoes were sent out! And more releases came up.
Notice: I also got some negative respons! I didn´t work that good everytime.. but that´s how it works!

Today I´m receiving democd´s myself - and it´s sooo cool! And I reply to the artists in the following week. It´s fuc.... important you do that!!!!!!!

If a label doesn´t like the demo - they still have to send an answer; Thanks for your demo - we don´t like it! (or something... hahaha).

God damn - it´s electronic music on vinyl!! No one sells more than 1500-2000 pcs nowadays! It can´t be that hard to run a label and not have the time to hear a cd and return to the artists with a nice letter...

About the tracks on the democd... I used to make 10 tracks.. or even send out 2xcd.... then the label could hear what I was able to make - and maybe choose the tracks they like. Today it´s more like 5 tracks on a cd. I´m getting more into concept building... the tracks fits eachother... and stuff.

Actually I haven´t released a record in 18 months... what the fuck... who cares...

it surely is, animal NT. Thanks. Well, I lost the train months ago so I haven´t bought any new records from them.. ahrr.. but the good thing is - you are always able to catch up on them! They have a great backcatalogue. And if a record sells out - they simply press some new.

Wish everyone was able to do that... then we didn´t have to use crazy amount of money on ebay...

Undress, you crazy freak! hahahaha

actionjetzon: aaahhhh. well he's moved three times in two years. so maybe that is the root of the problem...

its better to send demos / promos to me, because its an office and there are always people there to get the post and also we arent likely to move without telling everyone the new address.

i can always pass things on to cristian and upload tracks for him to hear etc.

if you do send demos to me please check it has arrived and remind me to get back to you with feedback.

it like when the wu-tang came out with "Protect ya neck" back in 94,
RZA pressed up 500 bits of vinyl and the track did the rest of the work.. you see? if you got some shit that makes people go "whoa" then u dont have to do shit, it will take care of itself. thats how it works.
at least thats if what your doing appeals to people on different levels.. whatever, fact is if the right people like your shit, it will get put out. and when i say the right people, im talking about people like Vibert etc.. not some nonce,

concentrate on makeing the music you love, put your heart in to it and enjoy it, send it off and if someone likes it they will pay you some money to put your music out. thats good and then when you get big, you can leave your label and set your own one up and sell on the internet.

thats all.

is it better to get in contact with the label before sending them demos or just send em and see what happens? and do you write something about yourself, some infos there you already have made something?
questions over questions..

i would contact the label first if you can. it's nice to open relations before sending music, that way you can more easily tailor the demo. a little info may be good but it shouldn't matter, the music is what counts.
