check the record collection of anyone who only owns about a dozen albums or so.

this will always be in it

something about abba that means that people who don't really like music always love it. I think because it requires absolutely no effort at all to listen to.

I don't think it's awful, I don't give the slightest fuck.

Actually it is awful maybe, but Dancing Queen is one of those songs that gets stuck in my head..

Anyway, I like some of their music - I wouldn't go so far as to say I loved it, so no vote from me

I am pretty much in the same boat.
I don't own any of their music, but if it is on it doesn't piss me off or anything.
I can listen to it.

i fucking love half of their music, and fucking hate the other half. anyway, if anyone wants to be snooty about abba, i'll meet you head-on with a long, dull, borderline autistic, howard goodall-style dissection of their mastery of songcraft and form, if you like

Good stuff, Abba. It's not only the songs but the production - they really went for it, and tried to create the poppiest pop sound ever. Maybe it's cos I'm listening from 30 years later or whatever but I can't sense the cynicism in their recordings that I can sense in today's honed pop productions.

I liked the Madonna remix, because it was a showing of mutual respect for these two great artists

wheezer from no future was in abba but was thrown out for wearing clothes that were deemed 'frankly embarrassing and totally inappropriate' by other band members. r o l f lz!!

They all used to put on their silver capes and moonboots and then Wheezer would turn up naked apart from a pair of wellingtons and a codpiece with teeth.

can't stand abba, I don't appreciate them in any way whatsoever.

I think there's one song that's vaguely passable and Madonna destroyed it.

My dislike of stuff like this is well honed from years of playing or going to techno clubs, then decending on an after party to find all the girls going - ohhh I know , let's put starship troopers, rasputin and dancing queen on.

Does my brain in tbh, I don't mind being a snob, I didn't get into techno or electronic because I thought it was the new disco, quite the opposite....

What Abba song did Madonna do?

I think the worst thing I've ever heard was her doing a cover of "American Pie".

Gimme Gimme Gimme - she aped the synth line for it at least.

I liked the Erasure version of that, and that's probably my only compromise when it comes to Abba (and opens me up to a right slagging from any abba loving erasure haters hehe).

Agree with yeh on the American Pie cover : a travesty.

I could answer you that, but I'm going to ask 1st - what has liking disco or Abba got to do with Techno and Electro ?

I'll concede a little...I don't think that concept wise - there's any relationship between any of them other than that they are all types of music.

It's like comparing a porn photograph with a Jackson Pollock painting, Both are paintings, but both represent very different ideals and techniques.

ah, give over. you're not seriously claiming that disco played no part whatsoever in the evolution of either of those genres, are you? are you a techno creationist or something?

nah, you're so wrong. listen to some early ron hardy mixes... acid house is so disco it hurts, before things coalesced into genres in the mid-late eighties things were a right old mess of disco, hip hop, electro and proto-acid/techno. Some of it get lumped in with 'Italo', whatever the fuck that really is. It's all about context, Derrick May was always a great one to slam Disco into the hardest techno ever and south american music.. and it would all come out sounding tough as fuck.

You need to get you some learning me fellar me lad
