what tv shows are you pointing your eyes at?

the current season of entourage - billy walsh is a brilliant character, beating the shit out of his cinematographer because "...it looks like somebody came on the lens". hopefully there'll be plenty more of him.

mad men - new show about madison avenue ad men in the early sixties, looks promising.

the riches - just watched the first season of this, not bad. eddie izzard and minnie driver are good in it.

rewatching the west wing season 7. jimmy smits for president!

After getting them on DVD, working my way through the first 3 series of The Wire again. Just as good the second time.

Just finished watching Heroes, despite not being that interested in the concept, once I'd seen it, I was hooked.

Seven Periods with Mr Gormsby is brilliant, so glad I was recommended this. About a New Zealand school where this old fashioned politically incorrect teacher comes in. Absolutely hilarious. "I can't give you a detention, I'm not allowed to use the cane, so if no one owns up to this, someone is going to get fucked." Reckon anyone who works in a school would love this. And anyone else.

No telly but this iswhat I've been TV-linking:

Waiting for Guffman , not as good as I thought+certainly not as good as Best In Show.

Anually Retentive- just discovered this, not bad.

Started The Fog of War, need to sit down and finish it, great so far.

do we have one of these every week now?

emef: I so love it that I got you hooked on pushing daisies.

I strongly recommend to everyone to start watching damages
glenn close and ted danson fuckin nail their roles there. and the writing is frikkin awesome. it's about a lawyer who tries to bring down a big tycoon, but it's more like your typical white/black legal drama. it's completely grey acutally. lot of smart twists in the story as well.
best show on right now. hands down.

@spoon: 7th season of west wing? really? eewwww. it went completely downhill after sorkin left. horrible last 3 seasons. :/
edit: mad men and the riches are great shows indeed. the riches got a second season. woohoo!

yeah, it peaked with season 4 which was fantastic television, but sorkin was never bothered with writing proper story arcs (he still isn't, studio 60 goes nowhere for most of it's first season), and that aspect of the show improved (okay, the zoe kidnapping thing in season 5 was rubbish) and i think season 7 was actually pretty damn good.

but yeah, it would have been better if he hadn't been fired for sure. has studio 60 been renewed for a season 2? i keep hearing different things.

yeah wws season 7 was probably not that bad but as the first 3 seasons were tv at it's best the last seasons had to deal with something they couldn't really live up to I guess. expectations too high and yaddayadda.

he didn't got fired btw. he left because the network wanted the show to be more towards the middle/more righty and less leftwing. that was too much for sorkin, who is probably the most radical and outspoken leftwingish writer you'll find in the US right now.

that also became a problem for s60 in my eyes. which was way too much about god, the war and that ugly, religious and annoying chick and yaddayadda. it had potential but it got canceled, and I sadly have to say they did right in canceling it. weird show that studio60, not really as good as I expected seeing both writer and cast 'n all that.
a good (but entirely different kind of) show about TV is 30Rock.

a cyncial, arrogant, hard drinking and smoking chef goes around the world and samples cuisine that most would dream of (or dare not touch).

the Lebanon episode is what really sold me about bourdain.
I had seen the show before and liked it, but the way they handled the Lebanon bombings was just so good. even as cantankerous as bourdain can be he does know how to handle serious matters rather eloquently and poignantly.
I have also read some articles he has written and he certainly has a way with words as well.

i thought the west wing got boring during series 3. having to get 22 epsiodes out of it per season stretched it out too far to the point where i was wishing martin sheen and rob lowe dead.

studio 60 pilot was amazing, but the rest of it stretched out too thin by too many episodes.

so in reading some of the opinions about shows having too many episodes I had a question. how do people feel about the amount of episodes in a season?
In the states it averages around 22, usually less once the show has been on the air for a while and the productions costs go up. but in england aren't your seasons much shorter? I remember watching the two seasons of spaced and really liked that there were only around 8 episodes for a season. I thought that the show had more punch being that way, whereas if it had to be 20 or so the plot and characters and most importantly jokes would have gotten stale and watered down.

7 actually.

I prefer British series for their length. I find I get bored sitting in front of a tv at the same time every week for 22 weeks or so. I just can't do it. If something's really good, I'd prefer to watch it at my own pace, so I'll download it if it's that length, or get it on DVD. Both Heroes and The Wire have been worth that, not sure how well other US tv series will manage with that, most seem to have a lot of filler in the series to pad it out. On British tv, they get straight to the point, so you don't have a mid-season dip.

If Life on Mars had been a US series, they could have easily fleshed out 22 episodes per series, and it probably would have still been mostly good, but instead, you got 8 episodes of pure class, and also all written by the same people, so you get a good consistancy throughout the series.

what is the deal with aqua teen hunger force?
that show isn't funny in the slightest.
I don't get why everyone loves it.
there isn't anything remotely funny about that show. not the characters, the stupid randomizations of the so called "plot" and most certainly not the dialogue.

I feel exactly the same about Family Guy. I'm probably the only person in the world who doesn't like it, though, from talking to people.

I don't care for family guy either.
but it is a bit more funny than aqua teen.
a lot of these new cartoons just feed of that whole idea of throwing in random themes and situations without any real plot to make someone laugh. the simpsons started it when they began to run out of story lines after being on the air for about 10 years, and family guy took that torch and ran with it. random can be funny, but it works better when it is used sparingly. ultimately a lot of the episodes of these kind of shows just feel like clip shows.

the folks at south park ripped family guy once apart in a brilliant twoparter. they laughed at the random 'do you remember the time we..'-jokes at family guy and so on. really great

its hard to explain to adults such as yourself

i like it
its entertaining
at 1am on a monday morning what else could you want apart from sex

as far family guy
i prefer it over the simpsons,
that show stopped being funny years ago.
dunno, i guess i can relate to it
alot of the humor is regional,
the northeast US specifically,
so theres jokes about stop and shop
brown university (my girlfriends alma mater)

i guess you're right to say that family guy took off where simpsons left off.
simpsons stopped being funny and family guy kept on being funny.

what all this bullshit about plots?
you want a cartoon? or a sitcom?
we're not talking about samurai champloo.
