I thought that someone might find this at least amusing or sad. Not that I have much regard for capitalist american rave culture, or much less attend them, there has recently been a bill passed unanimously in the Senate to seriously try to 'crack down' on the events. Called the Rave Act, it is short for Reducing Americans' Vulnerability to Ecstasy. Under it, promoters are held responsible for violation of the 'crack house ' law which is usually applied to such inner city establishments of the same name. Obviously things are different in Britain or wherever, but are such measures of intolerance unheard of there?

see when I was a kid and going to party/raves, I had older friends who taught me about protocol, and how to act at a party and not do stupid things like get too fucked up. kids these days don't know any better. the don't educate themselves on what they put in their bodies. and the scene has gone way down. but the thing that I find real funny with the whole government "crack down" on ecstasty is that I am offered X about the same amount of times at a rave as I am seeing Tool in concert. ecstasy isn't just for ravers.

i'm as annoyed by young druggies giving the scene a bad name as the next guy, but i still think the us govt has/is/and-will-continue-to deal with the problem all wrong.
i know this is not a drug-policy-reform forum, but i urge anyone, especially americans, to at least keep on top of this issue so we can get some changes in future policies. Extensive polls and studies have shown that prevention and treatment programs are the most effective way of dealing with drug problems in society, and while politicians claim to be increasing funds for prevention, if you really look at the numbers, they are still putting the bulk of the efforts into law enforcement and criminalization.
The biggest problem with the RAVE Act is that will be punishing event organizers and property owners for any event where the host or property owner where drug users are in attendance. This can apply to house parties, clubs, square dances, whatever. If you as a host fail to foresee potential druggies, you are facing a potential 250,000 in fines and years in a federal prison. The bill also makes it a federal crime to rent property to medical marijuana patients and their caregivers.

The Land of the Free My Ass !!!!
As an american I can tell you that we Lose MorE and More freedom each and everyday. The GOvernment is F#$Kin Shit, They are just Out for the money, Fuckers make more money on the drugs than the dealers, but they make it by creating budgets for different departments to suposedly combat the Drugs, Which creates jobs, and court cases that keep the whole scummy dirty system afloat. They just want a bigger slice of the cake, (e) is Peaking here and they want their share. They don't give a shit about People and treatment, and the "kids" Please !!!!!! They Make $$$$$$ of of alchol and tobacco, then they go set up organizations that are supposedly EDUCATING the Youth about its dangers (of course they make $$ this way too) meanwhile they are really advertising the shit. They did a survey with the kids here on this huge campagne in the US called "INFECT TRUTH" its this anti tobacco industry thing, and all the kids where saying that when they see that shit it makes them WANT TO SMOKE !!!!!!!!!!
The truth is we are a bunch of SHEEP and there is no way to escape it, there has not been a way to escape it for long long long time NOW. AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS WHY PEOPLE TAKE DRUGS !!! TO ESCAPE THE BULLSHIT THAT WE GOT OURSELVES INTO WHEN SOCIETY AND GOVERNMENT HAPPENED. OH YEAH WE HAVE THE right to Vote, but we can only choose from two Fuckin people that by the way are elietist fucks that dont represent the majority of us.

Isn't it ironic that the US Govenment can admit publicly to giving their pilots & marines speed & MDMA for war efforts, yet also push the law this way? Hell there was even a recent case where a military man was sent to military prison for 10-15 yrs for selling MDMA - funny that as soon as they're out of the war situation where its SUPPLIED by the military, that they can now justify punishing there own soldiers with a charge 3x the maximum length for normal citizens.
The drug business is probably the government's meat & potatoes! They've gone so far down this bullheaded path that i think they'd be more worried about losing public face in the next election due to being fickle with their position, than actually READING the proper (and non government grant influenced) studies and changing their attitude on criminalization. We have enough access to information as people of first world countries to know that their tactics are COMPLETELY IGNORANT and actually IRRESPONSIBLE concerning the health and welfare of thier country. Drugs ARE availlable everywhere and people will do them regardless - knowledge is the real power to creating a safe environment & lifestyle choices.
Anyone head about Bush's public announcement regarding the institution of what basically amount to Thought Police? He's saying that one in ten families will basically be 'selected' by the govenment to act as 'terrorist police' - reporting on those around them. Unbelieveable!
I feel sorry for the state that tihings have turned into down there regarding this issue...i can only hope that it doesn't turn the US into a police state like it's headed towards. i also hope it results in some pretty inspired music!...
that is all,

lefthandlou: well said. exactly the way it is here. is there anyway to change what is happening (in your opinion?)
i knew that when George Dubya took office we were collectively fucked. I don't think i could ever really imagine that things would have turned out like this. And to think that this is the guy who represents our nation and our interests. what great choices we have to work with. It just doesn't make a damn bit of sense but life here never does anyway.
So they want to crack down on Ecstasy and the way to do that is by muscling in on raves? That'll give every local cop a raging hard-on to go out on the weekends and shut down any party they can find. "Got drugs, huh, empty out 'cher pockets. C'mon spaceboy, empty out 'cher fuckin' pockets." Shit man, it's not just ravers but jocks and frat boys and club girls and punks and hip hoppers and the white america looking for just a kick to buy the time. everyone is gobbling e's around here and it makes more money than coke ever did and look what they put into fighting that.
Why not put more money into the arts and health care and education rather than trying to overthrow the world and make everyone live by your standards?

7875 Thanks Bro !
Can We change it ? Probably not !
It would take a revolution which for the states is a very unrealistic, this is why:
1) A revolution would need a united effort by an exteremly large group of people who jointly force a tremendous change, it requires a great deal of organization, and must be triggered by an event or belief so extreme to initiate such a unified struggle
2) Revolutions historicaly occur when the majority of the population is in the ages of 18 to about 27, its a young peoples game, and our population is certainly not at such a state. Plus the majority of our population is caught up in their own day to day struggle and blinded by the media and the greed that goes hand in hand with our lovely capatalist system
3) Revolutions have also been triggered in the past by an outside party (or country) but this has been pretty much the US doing this in the past, and I can't really think of any other cases, although I would think the British may have some skelletons in their closets as well.
The truth is thousands of years of "civilization" has build a cage so tight for humanity that it is I belive unescapeable. We can at best try to work real hard to ellect someone that gets close to the ideal view in life, which is of course relative and even then POWER CORRUPTS, so that really is not going to work.
My Suggestion is to find joy in your every day life, and live your life to the best extent possible. Do things that make you happy, treat yourself, look for beauty around you, and try to block the bullshit around you. I'm not promoting ignorance in fact you should be aware, but always question the source of the information, AND ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE HAPPY WITH YOUR LIFE.
The world is a fucked up place, you got to make sure you have a kick ass time regardless ;) If you waste your whole life trying to change it it will only leave you old and bitter and eventually dead. So fuck it go record shoping instead, music is still the best drug !!!
BTW I went to school in Eugene OR, Take Care All !!

it is a really scary world we live in. as I am getting older and beginning to chill out, the thoughts of a wife and family have been creeping into my head a bit. and I look at the world and my country (usa) and I see a world that I don't want to bring life into. my country is supposed to be leading the free world and all that junk. yet I see my government do things that they condem others for doing. my government is not a representation of the country. we are not all rich white bureaucrats. we live in a land that is supposed to be a democracy when in fact my vote doesn't mean shit when voting for president. I agree that we need to live our lives as best we can. that is what I am trying to do, enjoy the simple pleasures. but for us americans the best thing we can do is to vote for independants for president to try to break up the 2 party system. and VOTE FOR LOCAL ELECTIONS. a single person you can do more by voting wisely at local elections than you do for president. you must start from the ground up to build a new house.

what i don't like in this thread is the insinuation that daft kids should not take interesting drugs. why not? they are perhaps the ones who really need to get their minds artificially stimulated - it could do them some good. if they were drinking they would be getting pregnant and fighting and causing trouble. i would far rather they were rolling their eyes and hugging each other.

We aren't talking neo-tropics here, mate. Daft people will do daft things, whether they're high or not.
