So I saw the rock band Tool in concert on monday and I was able to sneek some recording gear in and record a bootleg of the show. and that has had me thinking a bit. do people bootleg techno club nights?? usually at most rock/hip hop concerts or clubs there are signs saying no recording equipment allowed. but I have never seen those kinds of signs at techno/rave clubs. I usually wouldn't really want to spend a great deal of time sitting still and recording when I could be dancing/drinking. but I was curious what people here thought about that. and mainly to crisitian or any other live act producers, how would you feel if you saw someone record your live gig, or tap a dat/MD into the front of house console??

a friend diligently stood still wif a md thru an entire squarepusher gig, and we have a pretty raw bootleg, its actually kinda fun tryin to make out the conversations around him....

see that is the worst part.
when I was recording tool I had this guy sitting behind me and he was purposely yelling
curse words so that they would get on my MD.

WTF?

you have no right to record a performance by any artists unless you have express written permisson!

why not, if you payed your entry (even if you didn't?) and don't don't take money to spread it around.

i recorded autechre when they played live in berlin last year. when i returned home i saw that there was only half an hour on the md - i had tried to stand still but i couldn't and my md-player's anti-shock didn't make it any longer. see that's what happens when music makes you wanna dance.

second attempt was when super_collider played in stammheim kassel. clever enough i gave the md-player to a friend sitting on a couch this time so i could hand my body over to the music. unfortunately the recording-quality was too low to enjoy listening to this again (people really can talk bullshit sitting in a chill-out..).

i think i give it up!

I know clubs where you aren’t allowed to take your MD-players, because of the overstuck of sets circulating on the web from these clubs.
But when you ask the dj and he says yes to the recording, you can connect it via the music system. The quality is better than with a microphone.

In my opinion it’s a question of confidence to make money or not with live recorded sets.
Look on the web, there you’ll find a ton of sites where people want money for “their” live recorded sets. They don’t respect the artist.

What are bootlegs for? It’s good to hear them, but it can never be as good as in the club. In the club or event you have people dancing to the music, the lights, a better sound system…
When I am hearing bootlegs from events that I’ve visited they remind my of a good time which I had.

if people ask us we usually say yes, i cant really see a problem with it unless they start selling them...

I was at Cocoon's closing party in Ibiza last September and a couple of German lads were in there recording the night. It was a bit mad having a conversation with them via notepaper and pen I can tell ya.

Mind you the state I was in, it would probably be easier writing words and pictures down than trying to talk.

i remember having stage access to a early local dave clarke event... and my MD fitted perfectly into the turbosound monitors.. bet dave would be amused. i even went and check the levels a couple of times... not knowing what type of person he was...

if he noticed me fooling around... i would have probably:
a) got my head kicked in
b) he would have left crying like a four year old who just got candy taken..

the purpose for bootlegs for me is to relive a good experience, and to listen to somethng different by my favorite artists. I don't sell my bootlegs, in fact I give them away to friends so I end up paying; for the show, the gas to ride there, the MDs to record on, the time to bring it into my computer to do edits, and the cdrs with cases to give to friends. so I am not taking anything from the artist. and gunjack I don't see a very big similarity between downloading mp3s and communism...

Come to think of it I've got loads of bootlegged mix tapes at home from all the old rave venues in the UK like The Eclipse, Shelleys, The Hac and loads of clubs in the North West. Completely shit recordings where most of the time you've got the sound coming out of one speaker, but still the soundtrack to my early teens .....

Aaah old skool 'ardcore and Italian piano anthems .......

Ratpack eh ? They're still doing the retro nights around the UK. Sort of cheesy old skool 'ardcore. Good fun though.

Come to think of it, the amount of 'Retro' or 'Back To The Old Skool' nights starting everywhere is frightening.

The last Retro night I went to was in Ibiza last year. Wicked tunes (well most of them, some of them made me cringe !!) but completely wasted on the shit crowd who probably didn't know most of them anyway.

I think the problem with Retro nights is that they can't replicate the crowd that was going to them at the time.

I'm going all misty-eyed now ......

I could be wrong on the bands, but I'm sure bands like Motorhead and Metallica used to have special areas in front of the stage where people could place their cassette recorders to bootleg the performances...

I mean I've heard a few bootlegged techno sets and with all the interferences, people shouting and cheering and various other glitches and interference I think it becomes more a souvenir than any serious recording that some may construe as some sort of attempt to steal music. Sure people are going to swap, sell and trade their bootleg tapes, but I think it can only promote the bands music and make people want to own the records with the songs on...

Whichever bands it were, I think they had the right attitude...
