Its something i've always liked the idea of doing but I've never even considered actually doing this before now so I need some help.

I want to press a single of my friend's songs .. er I mean tracks. I want to do this because I really like the song (which is rarity cos I have terrible goth music taste usually and this song is a wierd techno song) but most of all i want to design the cover which is probably a selfish reason but never mind, the end justifies the motive.
in september I'm gonna have access to another student grant and want to spend a bit on becoming a record label mogul .

how much does it usually cost?
how many can you get for say £500 (inc covers)
I don't understand the web quotes on pressing sites.
How do you distribute it?
help!!!!!

I onced asked this question on another board a while ago and this is the advice I got back.

1. If you want to release on vinyl then have the track/tracks proberley mastered. It's not good waiting for the test pressing to find that the needle jumps out of the grooves. This will cost you between 30 -80 quid a track. This is really dependent on where you go.

2. Graphical/Complex covers can add alot to the cost.

3. For a first release the best distrubution method is leg work ... Basiclly drive around your local records shops and try to flog it. then try shops that speciallize in your sort of music.

Think that was about it really .... oh and reserve a few to send to PR/Distrubuters and DJs to plug your work ...

Some one gave me an overall cost of about 1000 pounds in total .. can't remember if that was 500 or a 1000 12"s ... but I think it was 500.

Hope this helps ... Hopefully someone will a more informed view will offer more advice ...

hey baba

paul from massive advance is the best person to talk to, he will be able to help you.

im no expert conversely as we have always had "p+D" deals, where the distribution company pays for manufacturing our records and then distribute them. we couldnt have done it other wise, we dont have enough available cash.
give us a call next week if you want help!!

it dose'nt have to be expensive if you want a exclusive cover.
