saw some bits on tv
liked elbow doing a song that seemed to be called 'we still believe in love so fuck you'
yay... nice sentiment
liked seeing the muse bass player doing his stuff in the crowd
was shocked to see oasis are still going, how many more times can they flog a dead horse, i love to hear how every song they do sounds exactly the same as the last... exactly, apart from some extremely minor lyrical swaparounds, maybe one day they will explore their studio a bit and find other things they can make noise with
managed to avoid orbital thank flip

i watched badly drawn boy and got excited because the drummer is a guy who records as Earl Shilton on Invisible
Spies so that was fun. it was also cool to see a learning disabled teen in the front absolutely singing every word and having the best time in the sunshine.
saw a bit of goldfrapp, nice outfit. saw morrissey, got emotional when he sang 'every day is like sunday'. Muse yet again provoked a lengthy discussion about progressive rock and gay men in indie music. saw a bit of orbital and it was odd to see them on telly in front of thousands because their studio is two doors down from my office and i see them all the time. last year they left their head lamp things lying around and we tried them on. they are very tight on the head and hurt.
any sight of colin and edith provoked me to turn over immediately.

thats ok, i know someone who likes muse and they told me - the lead singer bloke is gay.
there arent many gay frontmen / women around in rock so i was having an interesting time trying to think of some
mark arm from mudhoney is gay, but i dont know if he was out in their heyday.

Mark Arm is gay? But Mark Arm is hot...no wonder, when I saw him roaming around at Primavera, he was happily having his picture taken with two strapping young lads but wouldn't stay still long enough for me to talk to him. Curses!
Although it does explain how he's managed to stay looking so youthful when other grungies have withered and sagged.

Then there's Roddy Bottum from FNM - unfortunate name, especially if you are gay.

29th June 2004, 14:32
Roddy Bottom's a hard name for a gay man!! lol
Got back last night. Had a great laugh. Orbital were very quiet, but the atmosphere in the crowd was brilliant, so I had fun.
Missed Chicks on Speed, because they clashed with PJ Harvey - who I really did enjoy. Groove Armada were great fun.
Cassette Boy were absolutely excellent, was interested how they'd do a 'live' show, but it worked really well, more of a cabaret than a rave, but everyone pissing themselves through their sow.
Spearhead put on an excellent show, as always, and Divine Comedy were surprisingly good for a very unlikely festival band, and they played my favourite song in the world ever, which was nice. Supergrass were as consistantly good as they are every time I see them play.
James Brown doesn't sing much anymore (he is about 400 years old, so it's to be expected) but his show was brilliant - he still has all the moves.
Highlight had to be Goldfrapp, truly beautiful music coming from them, as the sun set behind us, I had the overwhelming urge to just hug everyone and cry.
I've walked miles over the past week, feel knackered now. Detox for the next 2 months, I think.

I managed to catch a bit of the coverage, and I did enjoy John Peel's occasional grunts and mutterings in light of his fellow hosts' unbridled enthusiasm for absolutely everything that was on...
Not that I want to cast a downer on things - there was some good things on too - but also an awful lot mediocre bands.
Just in general recently it seems to me that the latest music trend is the 'new band' - you know some plucky youngsters, erm, pluckng away on their guitars, in a fairly accomplished, but utterly uninspired manner.
I guess it has its merits, all the punters feel empowered cos they are into something that must be cutting edge - the record companies get to rip of some enthusiatic kids (ahem I mean trim their margins), what's not to like.
The upshot is a lot of mediocre pub bands being introduced by curiously out-of-breath Radio 1 djs...
emef
29th June 2004, 19:44
isn`t that par for the course, the latest trend is always the new band, i suppose thats why its the latest trend not last weeks rehash, young`uns go mad for the new stuff, old`uns complain about where it all came from
old(er) people always moan about new bands cos they have all the records that inspired the young`uns
it was the same when electroclash came along ripping off all my favourite bands... luckily for me electroclash seems to be quite disliked amongst my kind of peep so i dont have to moan too much about it :D

Am I the only person in the whole world over the age of 20 to really quite like Colin & Edith (as presenters, anyway - I strongly suspect Colin for sure and maybe Edith too would get you grinding your teeth very quickly in person)?
Incidentally, aparrently Edith is now boffing Guy Garvey. Appropriate given that both of them are keen like dressing like The Old Gits.
As for gay frontmen, hmmm that's got me thinking... I mean being a frontman in itself is pretty damn camp... and Little Richard defined the more glamourous end of Rock right at the start... then there's Elton, I suppose, who like him or loathe him was just about the biggest rock star around for a time... and lots of the classic frontmen PLAYED at being gay - Lennon (sort of, at least he flirted hideously with Epstein then kicked it back in his face), Bowie, Jagger, Lou Reed... My friend who runs the Duckie Club down in Vauxhall says the essence of rock'n'roll is gay (but then he would)... hmmm...

colin try`s too hard, always trying to be down with the bands when he`s an obvious dork
edith`s alright, a bit straight but ok presenter
my favourite presenter of glasto was lauren laverne
i wish she hosted more stuff, i think she`s fantastic
@knid is the duckie club in vauxhall for real? i wanna go, sounds ace

Oh but yes... you can always throw into relief how shite just about anyone is by mentioning Ms Laverne. I LOVE Lauren. There's barely a journo around who knows music like she does (and any that do know it better than her are unbearable nerds), she's double funny, she's a sympathetic sort of character, and she's something of a fox! She rules.

Who are Colin & Edith?
Saw a few minutes of Belle & Sebastian. How have these people not been killed yet? Loz, were you watching them? Why didn't you kill them?
Also saw that Irish folk singer, what's his name? Old guy....anyway, he was really good, I like Irish folky stuff, usually has cool lyrics going on in it.

oh yes, time to pipe up: colin and edith are atrocious. colin with his nerdy knowledge and edith with her nothingness. jo whiley has a lot to answer for. she invented the persona of dull person with loads of knowledge and no passion. pretending to be matey with everyone famous yet you know they all blank her out when the camera light's off. everybody fuck off. presenters who'd present anything, regardless of anything. prefessional fameseekers. i mean it pays well and it bolsters your ego no doubt. wish i could do a good n ireland accent without shouting out the side of my mouth tho, i really wanna do one of them
Goonie

Sorry.. refuse to go anywhere near that band. I think I was busy shoving MDMA up my bumhole or something when they were on.
Next time, I'll bring a grenade when they play.
funny thing about Orbital, everyone who was there says it was a great show, everyone who watched it/listened to it on the radio or tv says it was shit.

well thats dance music for you!
i love the way they try and film dance acts djs etc. so funny. basment jaxx looked like a good show though.
missed Basement Jaxx.. think I was watching Squarepusher at the time. Twiddly-bass-tastic.
Although no fucker was dancing there 'sides me, and I was getting increasely pissed off at all the people who felt that they had the right to push to the front of an already very packed crowd all the way during the hour and a half set.
