View Full Version : Pitch Itch

I've got this perception thing.
When I have listened to a tune at it's nominal pitch (eg an mp3) for more than say, ten times, my brain makes a mental image of that tune. You know what I'm talking about right? When one is familiar with a piece of music they can recall it in their head and "sing along". Well, when I then go and buy it on vinyl, start mixing it & playing around with the pitch, anything above or below the smallest increment's difference to the original pitch makes the tune sound all wrong in my head. Curse my brain! Maybe this is what is known as "relative pitch"?

:)
Thats the one, though I don't get to see any lame-arsed cartoon fx while its playing.
Having said that, in my flat the "ally-mcbeal-effect" means turning the TV off.

Not exactly, but I can always hum a middle c pretty much spot on, not that I go round humming middle c all day mind you. Thats the sort of thing school kids do in unison to wind up their RE teacher! I was just wondering if this is a common condition amoungst vinyl abusers. Presumably it will be more noticable if you have made the track yourself?

I tend to agree. for me though its usually the fact that I will get a new piece of vinyl and start mixing it right away. since I pitch up all my records I am used to hearing said record faster. so when I am chilling out and I play a record just to hear it if I play it on 0 or +2 it sounds a little weird. that and when I hear a mix cd with a record that I have and am used to mixing and the other dj plays it slower in their set it sounds weird to me.

Oh man, I deal with this everytime I hear someone drop one of my tracks in a mix somewhere. From creation to completion you have it drilled in your head at that one speed and frequency range. Then all of a sudden you're hearing it differently and it really does catch your attention. You get that lil' voice in your head going "that's not how I intended for you to hear it..." ha ha ha

mr. birken i got somyer records
i like that first track on sab.3
cool stuff:)
The worst one for me was being at an Illegal party just before we went to get UF 01 cut, some guy was playing one of my records at 45......
a lesson to be learned: cut everything at 45, they can play it slow if they like, just goes sludge then, nothing I can't stand more than 200 bpm + on a record that was never ment to be so fast.... the kiks lose all the bass......
