so my boyfriend and i have decided to swap mixtapes since he's into rock and punk and i'm into all my electronic stuff and want to find out more about each other's music.

what would you guys put on a tape for someone who comes from a rock background? (he's not completely clueless...he knows squarepusher, dj shadow, cabbage boy...)

super collider, flanger, herbert, maybe tortoise, mouse on mars that kind of stuff ... i wouldn't start with techno ... maybe also some d&b/IDM stuff like bogdan rasczynski, venetian snares and so on. i was also a complete rocker to the age of 16, then stuff like tricky, massive attack and so on brought me into electronic music.

hard dark techno with heavy basslines.
anything from sativae label, terence fixmer, some heckmann stuff, landstrumm with his funky drum edits and some bolzbolz always works. yeah this would work :) or maybe not...

mmm...i hadn't even thought of mouse on mars - good call.

I would be honest and put some crazy french hardtek C.D n FKY or some mark hawkins n forshaw... coz thats the stuff i love and if me partner loves me am sure they shall love my taste in music too...

(well its not happend yet)
last week i had a girl i was seeing from germany come over to see me and so i let here here some of my record collection, it went down like a pig out the sky. ive finished with her now because of that.

well i've been thinking about it a lot, and i'm planning on putting on a big variety of styles and tracks from different times. it's going to be just at straight old fashion mix tape (not mixed together - i don't own all the shit i want to put on it on vinyl unfortunately), so i have the freedom to do that.

some autechre tracks from the amber album. those are pretty accessible techno to someone who has never heard much.

i think like a tim is a good option, too.

karitek

cool...good idea hippy. yeah, i'm definitely interested in what he puts on mine. he's just as into music as i am...just totally different genres -the only place we overlap is with old skool hip hop. so it should be interesting.

I did a mixtape for a rock friend recently and this what I would put:

Oval - Textuell
Air Liquide - Shortwaves 1
Knifehadchop - Hooked on Ebonics chill out mix
Antipop Consortium - Ghostlawns (LFO remix)
Zeigenbock Kopf - Sex With A Man
Super_collider - Pay It Away
Phoenecia - Odd Job (Get Fresh)
Egyptian Lover - Egypt Egypt
Fenshu & macross - Turnloop
Like A tim - Sheila On E
The Bug - Killer
DJ Scud - No Love
Ceephax Acid Crew -Pacific Corpse

Basically electronic stuff which is slightly weird but quite catchy as well. I think this sort of stuff would appeal to someone who likes punk.

cdrs full of mp3s are the death of the mixtape. more people should endevour to fit something nice within 70min of an actual cd.

This is so funny...when me and Paul started getting into it with each other, we swapped tapes - but of our teenage music, cos we had just discovered that we were both teenage indie sluts. He got Klark Kent and Jacob's Mouse, I got Nomeansno (the start of a small obsession) and AC Temple. It was excellent :)

I too was an obsessive tape-maker when I was younger, and have fond memories of staying up late into the night, poring over my gigantic collection of dusty C90s, searching for the perfect track to follow whatever had just gone on...pressing the fruits of my labour into slightly non-plussed friends' hands...it's a great way to pass the time when you're skint, at any rate. Having not made one for years, I did up a random collection of stuff for my best mate and all the old enjoyment came flooding back. Also she loved it.

I still have some 'mixtapes' my kindergartner made for my mum after they had met at a einstürzende neubauten concert back in the dizzay, it is a eerie pleasure to dig up those old things and listen to 'em again after 20 or so years and sort-of recognize everything while not really remembering anything, coz obviously I listen with slightly different ears to the stuff then at age 5.

it certainly helped to get me into what looks like a lifelong obsession with hunting for vinyl, as a lot of the stuff he recorded was pretty wonky stuff for the time, neubauten sideprojects and residents is what I've managed to identify so far, with lots of other weird shit still bubbling under...

I'm surprised someone hasn't come up with an iPod/iTunes/Audioscrobbler music-match-making-mating program.

Just whip out your iPod in a trendy watering hole in Shoreditch - activate seek 'soul'mate and see if there are any cool people, digging your vibe nearby.

Perhaps they can make it pulse a soothing pink to indicate if you are anywhere near the musicmate of your dream.

maybe becoz for a large majority, music is not really a terribly telltale personality trait, nor is it recognized as a possible trait, i.e. "I like what's on the radio"?

... or then I'm just a wee bit bitter after playing at a lovely mcdonald's sponsored shindig where both floors enjoyed the most activity when the respective, admittedly quite attractive, female (non-)djs played their slots (one played a nice meddley of 4 x "I feel love", 1 x nirvana, 1 x ac/dc house bootlegs, the other seemlessly blended one tooltechno track in to the next...) :)

@ Karitek - the mixtape thing sounds like a really nice idea.

I've only done one mixtape for another person... I really enjoyed doing it (as dorky as it may sound), but I got excited about the person listening to 'my music', and what their opinion of it would be - good or bad... It's always nice when someone else want's you to give their kind of music a whirl - especially if it leads onto you becomeing interested in more of whats on the tape / cd....

I'm kinda with what Wheezer said on music not being a personality trait...sure, it can be something to have in common with the person, but it doesn't really mean that they are bound to be your soulmate - it's nice to have different genres of music between two people - like a learning/teaching experience - like making a mixtape perhaps?..... ;)
