in 1997, ript skin records, seated in brentwood, essex, released a 4-track maxi called going uphill e.p. by the artist phon (r.english). lots of 808 and 303, pretty dark and psychedelic, a bit like old afx stuff.
does anyone know more about this label or artist? are there more records?

thanks sheridan. this record seems to be not available (was limited release on clear vinyl), whereas the one on ript skin is getting moldy in the shops (at least here in my city) - and that´s a shame cos it´s a very good record. does anybody own the one on reload and/or can say something about it?

r.english was releasing
quite a lot of quality
distorto electro
for awhile there,
the phon record
on ript skin
likely being
his most accessible
work.

the vomit ep
on reload
is quite good,
as well.

very harsh,
digital noise
laden broken
beats bearing
a distinctly
aphexian
influence,
much like
the majority
of his work.

also of note
were his
self released
headcleaner
1+2 eps,

which contain
similar material,
along with some
incredibly stoned
downtempo and
a rather bracing
speedcore jam.

back when these
were semi easy
to find, they
generally lurked
amongst stacks
of spiral/teknival
type stuff, a
movement with
which he always
struck me as
being marginally
associated.

don't know
what's happened
to the man since
1998 or so.

seems to have
fallen off the
earth entirely...

thanks cmarakasu. now i try to be sherlox holmex and put together the hints given here with the information i found on the internet.

r.english, who did phon on ript skin, released dystopia III on reload. now there is a artist called headcleaner on reload aswell. if it´s true they are the same, r.english must be dj psychogene (who seems to be belgian), cos headcleaner are n.scaravilli and dj psychogene. (there is also a punk band called headcleaner, but that´s a different story). n.scaravilli is now mainly producing house, his latest big release being a remix for kylie minogue this year. dj psychogene is still doing a lot of spinning (in pretty good and very bad context - detroit techno acts on the one side and goa-djs on the other). headcleaner just released a (limited) maxi on terra (rephlex´side-label) called "position normal". in 97 headcleaner released critical breakdown on reload, aswell as some remixes in 98, also on reload. under the name sharpside they released records on records deluxe in belgium in 2001. now i need a link between r.english and dj psychogene...
