I promote a UK techno night called Pure Filth. We've been running years, and I'd like to think we've built up a fairly solid reputation for quality music and a quality night.

At the end of last year a night started up in Manchester calling themselves Pure Filth. To make matters worse they play Hard House. It makes me cringe everytime I see their listings next to my name.

We contacted them straight away regarding the matter, but they are still trading as Pure Filth. I've let it go in the hope that with the so called decline of UK clubbing they fade away and die, but I think it is time to get more proactive.

Do I have a case for claiming they are passing themselves off Pure Filth???

Am I better just accepting the offer from some people I know in Manchester who have offered to *politely* advise them to change their name??

Cheers

I think you'd be better off having a word - I know of 2 other nights called Pure Filth, one in Loughborough, one in Leicester. Neither of these run events anymore, but both were running in 1994 and before so I think you'd struggle to prove you were the first using the name.

Send in the boys.

According to the bloke at the Left legged pineapple in Loughborough they still do the odd night, he told me when I took some flyers in. I wouldn't worry about them though...

its annoying but there's fuck all you can do except make some lawyers rich. is it really worth it?

there's another label called mosquito, its a trance label. we once got a phone call from a publishers because the other mosquito label had sampled phil collins on one of their tracks illegally and they rang us. i was racking my brain thinking, 'the only person who could have done that is si begg'. but thankfully we are collins free.

I have/had two labels that I named before I was internet savvy and knew the power of google. One name was also used by a San Francisco or LA based punk label, and I forget what the other name was used for.

I think that if you use a real word or a combination of real words you can pretty much be sure that you're not the first to have done it, or at least that others won't think of the same thing independently.

Make up words, that's the way to go, I reckon. WAMGITRUSTLEJIJIJI - the home of Nottingham techno.

I like the idea of sticking the rig on the back of a lorry, parking up outside the pub or club or whatever where they do this night in Manchester, on their night and just totally letting rip with the system.

Judging by the 1/5 volume demo in Nottingham’s market square we probably have the firepower to blast music right into the club – then we just get some people handing out flyers, in fact lets do the relabelled canned food idea we always talked about – Pure Filth – Original and Best!

I mean you can’t get done for playing music in your vehicle can you – I mean they can get a noise abatement order, but that would involve ringing up H&S and getting one issued. We only need a few hours at the opening and close of their club. We’ll be long gone.

Anyone fancy playing a set? :)
