Richard James is renowned for making shit up in interviews (e.g. "I didn't sleep for a year and a half once")
hahaha, or 'my tank is now parked in my sisters garden shack'
or even ' to make it in this business, i used to airbrush cocks all day'

Dre from Outkast has been bangin' on about how much he loves squarepusher/AFX of late.... that would be an interesting combination for sure.

because like some weird old genesis cult they believe that they both sprung forth fully formed and made theonlyrelevantelectronicmusic ever. as oppossed to being two individuals with wide and informed tastes whose genius is in transposing their appropriated influences in new and exciting ways

oh, ok.
do they really continue to transpose their whatsits in new and exciting ways?
i love work by both of 'em but I'm not convinced that they've really done that much new and exciting of late....

I'm beginning to suspect that Phil may be Richard James... :)
no, don't you remember, Richard James already came to this board. He called himself 'Aphex Twin' so we'd all know it was him, too.

WORD YOU-to-the-motherfucking-PEE
I love debunked myths, and the myth of the genius as a magical creature of another species whose work can and MUST never be analysed is a great one. You just summed up excellently the argument in a chapter about genius in this lush book:
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0195143264/ref=sib_rdr_dp/002-2728061-6672007?%5Fencoding=UTF8&no=283155&me=ATVPDKIKX0DER&st=books"><img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0195143264.01._PE_PIdp-schmooS,TopRight,7,-26_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg"></a>
The important thing is that someone considered to be a genius is QUANTITAVELY different from the run of the mill person (they work harder, they store more information, they can draw more functional connections between things yadday yadda) but not QUALITAVELY difference - i.e. there is not some magic(k)al property, essence, spirit or other transcendent special hat which they where which makes them oh so special.
This doesn't make Tom Jenkinson, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or Bob Gamelan from 179 Acacia Avenue, Java any less important or great a musicians - in fact it makes them more interesting because it takes away the unecessary obscurantism which tries to hide the brilliant details and processes of creativity....
