I think The Streets are fuckign appalling those lyrics, jeez - he's being hailed as a poet, but I can't see it, just another inarticulate idiot - the only reason I can see that the press are all over him is that he is white and that is very sad.

I think he's a cock :)
He's from birmingham but talks like a bad extra on Eastenders.

the streets are shit. his fake assed rude bwoy attitide embarrases me.
i turned up late to a pub party in homerton a while back and the dj played that streets record, dont mug yourself, and the people that were there went apeshit, much leaping and cavorting it was class, top tune

he has a cockerney accent cos he is originally from landan, but his fambly moved to brum when he was wee. i read the grauniad so i know that. it's better than putting on a silly fake american accent, anyway.
i don't think he's inarticulate at all. how you work that one out? i'd say the opposite. he articulates everyday things that ordinary people experience. nothing wrong with that. makes a change from mindless bling or dealing crack in nyc.
anyway, is it right to compare him to US rappers? i think not. he's more of a spoken word set to music geezer than a rapper, i'd say.
very english thing. not hip hop, just his own thing.
i haven't listened to the album tho so i should probably shut up

i just cant really get excited about the streets, i hate anything hyped although it doesnt mean he's bad or anything. im just sick of the sight of him.
mind you i think the current single is absolutely shit and saw him live on jonathon ross and it was so boring and amateur.

11th May 2004, 14:14
He is inarticulate cos he is stupid - his lyrics are just some idiot talking shit about boring things - like most rap, I guess. He's supposed to be a normal geezer talking about normal things but IMO he is mundane and banal and doesn't have much to say that is woth listening too. IMNSHO naturally.

He's fucking brilliant. Does he claim to be a poet or a rapper or black or anything else? Bollocks does he. He does what he does, he does it fucking well. The press are all over him because he's POPULAR.
I played Fit But You Know it to a crowd of people who know their music but were right pissed up on a Saturday night, before it was well known, and the place went right off. People were loving it on its own merits, not because of hype or who it was or anything.
Thompson, you're not even black yourself, you silly Samoan.

if you want really articulate funny lyrics about things that are relevant to UK people check out Kid Acne on invisible spies.

There's no convincing people on this topic, though, as we saw on just about every messageboard in musicdom when the first album came out. I've said my piece now and I'm leaving this discussion, before it drags on to infinity.
kid acne - council pop is great

pissed up people enjoyed music they all recognise as being the streets - hardly a revelation knid...sorry i think that single is WEAK. i hate it. its like a parody of himself.
im not against him, i just dont feel the need to get involved with that album because i know wherever i look it will be rammed down my throat for the whole summer anyway.
good on him for being successful and having the populist touch, but im not that interested all things being considered.

OK, one last comment, as yes, just the fact that his tunes make pissed people dance isn't necessarily a recommendation.
I think there is artistry to what he does and several of his songs move me. In fact when I saw them do 'Its Too Late' from the first album live, together with its brilliant accompanying film it was actually one of THE most touching on-stage musical moments I've seen in a long time. Really magic. I think The Streets is really great timeless pop music, and that is that.

also the press are all over him because it's easy to write about him and dissect him. the article in the grauniad was a definite candidate for pseuds corner if ever there was one. i think it was comparing him to james joyce...
mind you, i'd much rather listen to the streets than read finnegans wake.
V Knid esq
11th May 2004, 14:26
Oh god I can't stay out of this.
All the press dissection is bollocks. I will now only read interviews with him and skip the analysis, after reading that abomination in the guardian. John Sutherland who wrote that is one of the worst writers in the press today (yes, there's professional jealousy at work here, but he genuinely is evilly shit), and Alexis Petridis who co-wrote it and wrote the grundian review of the album isn't much better. At least when I write about stuff I try to stick to reporting, and letting people speak for themselves - if you present the facts clearly enough you don't NEED to do twatty analysis or make bullshit assumptions.

11th May 2004, 14:30
heehee, handbags. i found it very entertaining (in a 'what a twat' kind of way, like i often do with articles in the wire too)- i think he even almost said himself that what he was writing was a load of bollocks.

kitty empires review of same album in the observer this weekend was a candidate for pseud's corner too.

Oh shame, I used to like the reviews she did in NME.
i like kid acne! he great!

hmm, project - pick out the most pretentious quotes from all the streets album reviews for media review section of something. that would be quite fun.

agreed. rapping about coalmines and tea is where its at.lol
i dont read into the streets stuff much ... some of his stuff i like, some of it i think is the epitomy of wank.
hes definitely no genius, theres shitloads of others doing exactly what he does better, they just arent known about ...
i certainly dont think hes shit though, since liking a few of his tunes is more than i can say about most artists.
i really dont think that mike skinner is a genuis... i only think that the music he does has "form" and is a typical bedroom production... i think u hear in the music that hes really givin a fuck about better production processes.... and thats a good thing for a guy that is totally overhyped by the fuckin press... other would run in the fancy shmancy studio and record a soopa doopa album with expensive enviroments to make more money with a second record, but thats not his intention... hes still makes that stuff that he want to do...
sure u can like him or not.... but anyway for that hes quite cool

agreed.
i think what a lot of people forget is that just because someone is overhyped by the media, doesnt mean they are shit, it just means they arent as good as the media makes out ...
also, as surprising as it is some people are actually popular because they are good. :)
like i said though, most of his stuff isnt to my taste, i just like a couple of his tunes enough to know he isnt completely shit.
also respect him for getting where he has.
and, for sure. i like it. no matter was the press said.... hes just a little wanker... not the fuckin aphex twin
