View Full Version : How do you keep your records?

Just interested me for some reason, how do you keep your records? in a pile next to your hifi, in obsessive alphabetical order, in chronological order, or some other order that makes sense only to one person?

Myself, I have a load of those little pine cd crates (for I have no record player to play vinyl, and hence, I only own 3 pieces of vinyl) that I've screwed to the wall, and keep my records in a sort of rough genre-ish order (similar sounding banks go next to each other, so my electronica is all together, my hip hop is all together, my jazz is all together, rock, etc, etc) and within bands, I have singles, then eps, then records, all in chronological order, with imports and promos taking precedence over regular copies...

oh shit, I'm a geek.. :!

i have my records in crates, with the ones i play the most in the first row of crates, with the lesser played in the back row of crates.
and i`ve got 6 crates of really hideous terrible records that i use as a turntables and mixer stand............3 crates on each side with a piece of wood slung across..........perfectly denying prying eyes access to my vinyl horrors.

I keep my records by not selling them ;) seriously now, Most of mine are scattered around the house leaning against things (the ones that I play the most that is, and the rest (the ones I don't play so much are in boxes). Some of the boxed ones I am too scared to play in case they are fucked and then I would be gutted ( if you know what I mean)

It never ceases to amaze me that some records can look like they have been used as a frisbee and place mat and still sound good whereas some can look really nice and clean yet sound like someone had a mic plugged into their mixer eating a bag of crisps when they recorded it. very deceptive.

I have 2 boxes (1 electro/techno + 1 speedcore/gabber/noise) but in these there's a chaotic order and I'm the only one who know where is which record...
And I also have my "vinyls horrors" lying somewhere in the room (so I can jump on them if I lose my nerves;) )

i have a extra room with two things in there, my computer and millions of records and after 4 relocations in the last 5 years i have absolute no plan where i can find a record, i'm always on the search. the records are leaned against the wall in thousand piles, for the gigs i have an case. so the absolute problem is that i really don't know the names of all records and now i will not learn this any more. thus is the alphabetic order nothing for me but i will sort it, i will, i promiss, someday, maybe...

...i will never sell a record any more!

I have a DJ case (decorated with mgrn stickers courtesy of the wonderful www.migraineentertainmentsyndi cate.com) that has whatever cheesy breaks and clonky house i'm playing at the moment, then a crate or two of good ol' techno. the rest are in a bookcase. i limit myself to about 2 shelves of cd's. i hate having cd's of shit that i never listen to so i'm constantly selling shit off.

Here in Denmark we run with these green milkcases.... they can hold up to 80 records... and you can "get" the cases all over the country. Just ask a friendly supermarket-owner... or just take them..!!! hahahaha... You can build towers with them, and can be easily brought from place to place...

I sort my records in; styles (ghettotech, Brighton, swedish bumbum....) even artistnames (dj Rush).. sometimes labels (drumcode/code red/hybrid)...blabla...

i handle it quite like you, loz. i roughly order my records and cds for styles and the artists chronologically. and i must admit i don't like records flying around everywhere. one just has to threat them with a little respect since they don't quality up.

maybe thats because i don't dj regularly and so only buy my records for listening them in the first. if i had to buy records for djing only the situation could be different.

My records (CDs) are in a shelf over my hifi.It has three levels. Each one is for one kind of music:
The first House with all its categories.
The second is Techno.
The third is for listening stuff.

But the levels are not arranged very well. It would call it chaos.
And so I can find whenever I search one certain record futile another good one, which I haven’t heard for months…

techno (mainly no future related)

then on the side ive got a 1950s record stand with

mine are kept in styles eg techno but at least some of them are usually in some form of artist or label order if I'm playing out so I can find what I want. Thay all clutter my bedroom floor in record boxes and crates and all the horrible old ones are hidden under the bed

I nicked a nice shelving unit from work that fits records perfectly (those accountants will never miss it!).
I try to keep my stuff arranged by style, but after a few gigs on the weekend it's a pain re-sorting it all out again. The top shelf goes to full albums (not dj-oriented),electro, breaks and other assorted wacky stuff. The second goes to groovy, layerable house & techno, the third carries my melodic techno & slamming hard techno, while the fourth carries all my sampling records plus the junk i haven't sold but will never play again.

I keep my favorite records in a record case in a chaotic order. Sometimes sorted by labels, artists, countries or the date when i bought it. The other records are in a cupboard. When i buy new records i put them into the case, and i remove some of the old ones.
Its just CHAOTIC.:parp:

mine (somewhere approaching 10,000 of the fuckers - my vinyl weighs a ton) are on big plastic shelves, mostly sorted out thusly:

Classic Rock / Metal
Indie / New Wave
Punk / Thrash
Reggae/ Dub
House
Hardcore
D&B
Hip Hop
Funk / Soul / Disco / Acid Jazz / Nu Jazz / Jazz Jazz
Techno
Electronic Noise
Abstract / Post Rock / "Electronica"
Downbeat / Ambient / Balearic

plus a few crates of randomly arranged new stuff or tracks that I've been playing or sampling recently on the floor. CDs are in my underwear drawer along with legal pharmaceuticals and toys.

All of the old vinyl is kept downstairs in the livingroom - Thats where most of the great music is in my house - old stuff that my mum and dad have.
I keep my music (mainly cd's) on the shelf underneath my system - albums that I overkill are kept on one side (and then sub-sorted by artist/genre), and my singles are stacked in two piles on the otherside.

for me I place my records in crates which are under my
table that I built for my turntables. all records are sorted
by country. i've got the england crate, sweedish crate,
japan, etc. then I group by artist, Oliver Ho, Neil Landstrumm,
etc. I too also have seperations by label, like Tresor or
whatever. also I have one crate that is all code red/ drumcode,
hybrid. funny how some things work.
as for CDs, they are in the corner. I prefer Minidisc.

my scary funk records go under the bed with the boogie man, my homosexual records go in the closet, and the rest i keep in the dirty dingy dark basement with my schizophrenic klone that i shout at and feed dry bread once a month.

my cds on the other hand are scattered like dead bodies all over my place/car/street/city and in one giant shit pile on my desk. which i find mind boggling, cause i have no cd player in my car.

i got a box of Deutsche Post AG
you can store nearly 60 records in it, its unique, the only disadavntage is that you can´t close it.
but my greatest wish is to have a soft record case

I have all my records stored in curver cases...
one red case for my maxis here I have put it together, that I may start with some easy listening tech and electrosounds before I start makin wood with da noises I have in da back of my case...
for me the case works but for other people I don´t think so...
my case is my indivduality-it is like a puzzle of my person...
I have the red case for da E.P.s
and a blue one for da L.P.s
and two other ones are standing beside my hifi with older sounds...
and (very important) my pieces of real black gold are stored in plastic covers to make them live forever:)

In MÄRD crates (IKEA product) in alphabetical order by label. Have tried oder ways (by artist, by style) but by label is best for me - it takes me a second to find what I want.

my records are in a big mess, but somehow i manage to navigate through them quite rapidly, perhaps because my brain is also a mess.
