CUPERTINO, California and HAMBURG, Germany -- July 1, 2002 --
Apple today announced it has acquired Emagic, a leading provider of professional software solutions for computer based music production. Emagic's most popular product, Logic, is actively used by over 200,000 musicians around the world. Emagic will operate as a wholly owned division of Apple.
"Emagic has set the industry standard for professional music creation and production," said Sina Tamaddon, Apple's senior vice president of Applications. "We're very excited to have the Emagic team join Apple and create more amazing products for musicians."
Macintosh-based products account for over 65 percent of Emagic's current revenues. Emagic's Windows-based product offerings will be discontinued on September 30, 2002.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Apple is committed to bringing the best personal computing experience to students, educators, creative professionals and consumers around the world through its innovative hardware, software and Internet offerings.

how can a company be so narrow-minded?!?!?!?
as for PROGRESS, i assume Windows-PC's will take Mac's to the grave by the end of this decade.sit down and watch..................

What are you talking about!???? All graphicdesigners or people close to that, newspaperbüros, mediabüros and most musicians use mac! Definitely not because it was cheaper than a pc, but STRONGER and more reliable!
And if the pc´s don´t manage to be just a little innovative here around 2002 (!!!!) - then we are talking about DEATH!

i think its possible they might realise its not such an 'insanely great' idea dropping logic for windows when they realise just how much its pissing people off...people that apple really want to maybe buy a mac at some point in the future. they have always been known for making short sighted decisions when it comes to things like this e.g. no win client for the iPod.
if you're pissed off, send them an email - or post something on the slashdot thread where apple may just be watching for a reaction...maybe they'll change their minds...

One door closes .... and another opens..
ProTool LE 5.3.1 is now available for Windows XP ...
I think with the Windows version of Logic biting the dust and DigiDesigns new MBox .. ProTools has got real chance ...
Providing they keep the cost down ....

unfortunately, digi is in a rather poor position right now as well. they just terminated a bunch of contractors.
while this move may piss off a lot of PC users, business is business. LAP 5.2 for OSX is almost ready, and it runs exceptionally well. The timing is solid, it's already aqua-fied, and it brings with it a foundation for CoreAudio and OSX midi services. With that in mind, Apple's decision makes complete sense: Final Cut Pro is an excellent product for video, and the purchase of Emagic allows them to provide the same thing for musicians. Apple has shown themselves as the platform for music since they first put RCA outs on the back of a Quadra, and this only continues their effort to maintain superiority. This doesn't mean, of course, it necessarily *is* a superior platform for all users' needs (an $1400 pc running cubase SX can still run more simultaneous vst plugins than a $3500 mac), but the decision makes complete sense for a company (emagic) whose goal is to develop the best possible product for their paying users.

at the expense of pissing off a third of their customer base to the extent that they may leave and never go near logic (and the mac platform) again

My baby! What have they done to my baby?!?! :)
Well, your sentiments are shared by many users. Don't forget, though, that you have at *least* another year of LAP use, if not more.
So, my final advice on the issue is that of one of the emagic windows programmers: wait until September 30, 2002, and then decide what you want to do.
(and in the meantime try out SX, because it's excellent unless you're a protools user)

damn i have to try sx but i heard its audioengine is based on nuendo and the nuendo eq´s were shit compared to logic.
logic is *makes a dreamy face* *sigh* just unbeaten. the sound.
the handling. everything.
and now version 5.2 comes out with all the nice goodies.
*sobs*
FREE LOGIC NOW!
apple go back an play with your photoshop and freehand damnit.

This is really major corporation bullshit going on here. I guess you can't help this kind of thing...unless you voice an opinion..LOUDLY. And still they will ignore. Maybe it's about time to get a mac..

I recently got into a rather massive argument about this on the nord modular list and heard some interesting opinions on your side of the issue. Paying users do have the right to be upset about this. And, at some level, yes it is corporate bullshit. Just about everything around you is, though.
However, there is one point many LAP users haven't really considered: Apple's move to terminate the wintel app of LAP might not be as simple as it seems.
http://osxonintel.xoverzero.com/ and many other sites are popping up lately. OSX has been ported to run on i86 processors, posing potential direct competition to Micro$oft on their own machines.
so, as far fetched as this may seem, if Apple plans to release OSX (or a later version) for intel chips, then the OSX version of Logic Audio would then run on what were previously windows machines.
i'm not sure i totally buy this theory, but it is one possibility to consider.

no it wouldn't run natively on an intel chip unless someone (at the very least) recompiled it. you would need the source for that so only apple/emagic could port it, and they're not going to.
and logic is optimised for the G4 so it uses AltiVec calls which would have to be written out of the PC version.
you could potentially run it on an emulator if you had obscene amounts of crunch available.
