did anyone see this on BBC2 last night?
i missed it at the cinema but got given the soundtrack which is a perfect CD to stick on when you got people round.
i enjoyed the film...visually and sonically. but would it harm filmmakers to attempt to show some coherence in the story? id like to read the novel and see if it gives any clues. i thought it wasnt abstract enough to be intriguing and wasnt realistically scripted enough to emotionally engage with the characters. i was really keen for it to end, partly because it was way past my bed time and partly because i was getting bored and frustrated with the 'im fucking mad but no-one else has noticed' routine.
probably more enjoyable in the cinema.

I bought on DVD a while ago. It's very dark.
Not sure if I'd bother watching again. But a cracking soundtrack.

I started watching it last night, and I think I could probably appreciate it in the right mood..
But I got the feeling it was going to be devastatingly depressing.. and I wasn't in the mood for it.

it wasnt depressing. it wasnt really anything. there wasnt any emotional depth at all. she was mad. end of story

i liked the book. i wanted to see the film, but i have removed my tv.
i read interviews w/ the director when it came out, she seemed fairly pleased with it.
spirals getting a name check, i liked that bit in the book.
'getting mortal' as well, great phrase
without wishing to hijack, mc's author alan whassname's book 'the man who walks' was pretty good too.

'Breaking the waves' was on TV recently.
Its great, but I didn't watch it again because its just too much :)
Lars Von Trier must be great fun at parties.

the film i saw last night seemed to bear almost no resemblance to book i read.
i read it about 6 years ago but i didn`t think my memory was that bad, maybe it is.
i had to turn the film off cos it was spoiling my nice memory of the book.
the book is one of my favourite reads, but was a friends copy so i only read it once.
i`m going to have to get it again to justify to myself how wide of the mark the film was.
and this is probably a silly comment but i half expected the film to have a sepia like tone to the picture, a weird sort of black and white look.
that is silly i guess but the book, in my head certainly wasn`t colour.

Emma's review of it is spot on - the book is a completely different experience - I was blown away by it, but the only thing I enjoyed about last night's film was the soundtrack - a shame cos Lynne Ramsay is very talented - her earlier Ratcatcher is excellent.

Also, maybe I'm just confusing my experience of the book with the film, but it isn't that she is mad, but she is empty, totally devoid of emotion.

hmm. didn't like the film much, yawn, tho it looked and sounded quite nice as all critics everywhere seem to say. didn't read the book either cos i just knew i wouldn't like it by reading a wee bit of it. but then i very often find books by 'acclaimed' 'recommended' british authors to be overwritten 'aren't i a clever writer, me' wank.

the book is fantastic, what i do remember is how alan warner describes things very intensely.
i tried to watch the film last night, but found it dull and tiresome

I've heard incredible things about the book, and not such great things about the film.
That was useful wasn't it?

in the film she isnt devoid of emotion all the time which is why it doesnt seem to gel...she laughs and is happy, she visits her friends nan, she jumps up and down with joy, she says she feels bad after the new years eve rave...
