Me and Cut Out will be chowing down on some flour-egg-milk based goodness, although nothing as swanky as you Emma, you swanksome spinach pancake maker. BTW, I found out the other day that the guy who played Will in the NT adaptation of His Dark Materials is someone I went to school with!

the kids and I are gonna be scoffing them down in a bit, god knows what we will put on them apart from lemon juice and sugar, the kids like bananas on them.

I dont reckon we are giving anything up for lent either but I wont here the end of it if they dont get pancakes today.

Hmm - think I know what I'm getting on the way home tonight - ricotta would be better than mozarella though - yummy.

I might give up religion for lent.

And in a few minutes I'm going to eat my own body weight in pancakes. Starting off savoury, maybe some nice hot chili, then something cheesey and then sweet. Maple syrup. Maybe chocolate and banana (perhaps flambéd with some brandy) and finishing with traditional lemon juice and sugar.
Then I might lie about listening to my arteries hardening.

yeah, ricotta would be the obvious choice wouldnt it. but 'im indoors wants mozzarella and what he wants he gets.

ive made the batter now so we are ready to rock when he gets in. im such a good significant other.

there's the french crepe style I prefer, the about fingerthick version, optionally with appleslices, the superfat casserole monster my gf and finns in general like to make, also good.

yes its using up all the fat stuff in the larder before fasting during lent which i guess is what you guys are doing with your pastry cream and jam.

mardi gras means 'fat tuesday' in french innit.

dont know why lent traditionally starts on a wednesday though. when does it end - palm sunday? when jesus rides into jerusalem on the donkey and people greet him with palms like a king, yes thats probably right, its been a while since i was a nun.

between the two. i think thicker for savoury and crepes for sweet.

there used to be a pancake restaurant in brighton called Cripes which was nice, but that was with galete pancakes which are kind of square. and crepes for sweet.

i stood at the stove for an hour making very thin pancakes for Jim. he had lemon & sugar, and i had orange and brandy :)
Didn't do any savoury fillings this year, but have done them in the past. i tried marscapone,smoked trout & dill one year, and that was deliciously creamy.

5 1/3 oz Flour
2 Eggs
1 c Water
1 pn Salt
1 ts Sugar
2 Squares Baking chocolate
1 tb Butter
2 tb Powdered sugar

Instructions

1. Mix flour, eggs, and water, salt and the sugar. Beat until very fluffy. Melt butter in skillet and drop in dough by tablespoonsful and spread out thinly. Make the pancakes small. Fry until golden brown. Keep warm.
2. Melt chocolate and powdered sugar in microwave or over hot water. Fill the pancakes with this mix. Roll them up gently. and sprinkle with additional powdered sugar. Serve WARM!

This applies to the western churches I think. Eastern Orthodox churches do a 'straight' 40 days. Bear with me for this explanation cos it's also been quite a while since I was a priest so I'm a bit sketchy, but if memory serves, the wednesday bidniz is just down to simple mathematics.
Lent is "forty days and nights", but sundays are excluded from the calculation as Sundays are classed as days of celebration, commemorating the resurrection. So you've got 40 days plus 7 sundays, giving you a total of 47 days in Lent. And when you work backwards for 47 days from Easter sunday, it always lands on a wednesday. So there's a sly con from the church. Lent is actually 47 days, not 40. *Gasp* Not the church pulling a fast one, surely not.

Can't remember how they pick easter sunday, though. Something to do with a certain number of days after the first full moon of the new year I think.

Oh, and Lent ends on Easter Sunday, innit. When the carpenter fella resurrects himself. Palm sunday is the sunday before Easter sunday, when they burn the palms which make the ashes for the following years Ash wednesday. What a load of hocus-pocus. And to think they've got the cheek to diss people for sacrificing chickens and dancing themselves into a trance.
