hi,

I would like to ask you guys if you know any kind of electronic music related movies, i saw last year Groove and Human Traffic, club, drugs & parties movies mostly, but realistic.

I also know that modulations, hang the dj and Loops & Samples, but i was wondering if there are more stuff like that, independent movies, documentaries...

thanx in advance,

Yoss

Modulations is one of the better ones for a brief history lesson/ intro to modern techno and dance.

Also there's the 4-part documentary series from this past year on the BBC called Pump up the Volume. I have a tape of the first volume which is a look into the history of Chicago House. I heard they are available in mpeg or real video somewhere on http://www.deephousepage.com

Theres also another pretty good documentary about the inventor of the Theremin - not really contemporary or techno related, but still worth a watch- I think its just called Theremin ??.

there is 'electronic jam' (only in german probably, it was on arte i guess). it´s pretty old, maybe 94 or 95. starring scanner (no), khan und walker (khan yep, walker no), deep space network (yep), rob gordon (yep), alec empire (can´t remember) and atom heart (interisting), (don´t know if i forgot anyone). strange documentation though...

i was wrong. it´s not khan and walker. it´s khans brother cem and therefore they are air liquide (am i right?), to me air liquide is def no (but maybe only walkers inconspicuous hand-trappings). but the part about their reduced live equipment is pretty funny.

i also remember i wrote a note for an american film called, raver´s bathroom, shot in a big rave, with a crowd in a bathroom there. Pretty ironic, there you hear the music as background but you can not see the Dj!!! hahaahahah

and a interesting one: Living through circuitry www.technofilm.com

thanx for all your feedbacks!

Loved Up (made for TV?), not very good
24 Hour Party People, I loved it but probably only 'cos I love the Mondays/New Oredr etc.

My personal favourite: The Inspector Morse episode (Cherubim and Seraphim)- talk about scaremongering, priceless lol Anyone remember?

In terms of documentaries the spiral tribe, sound conspiracy and desert storm vids which are probably somehwere on youtube, and the documentaries on acid house/rave (see true raving thread).

That Morse episode was classic. They even had a convoy in it.

I also liked the documentary about the traveller girl, which I think is here.

I think the pump up the volume is on youtube as well, I thought pump up the volume was channel 4 wasn't it.

there was a BBC 4 thing on the Radiophonic workshop called Alchemists of Sound that was on not that long ago.

I thought Loved Up was pretty good at the time... don't know if it stands up now, but it had Ian Hart in the lead role and he's one of my favourite actors. One moment sticks in my mind - when he's pilled up in a really loud club, yelling at his girlfriend 'ITS ALL GONNA BE ALRIGHT' and she's just going 'what? i can't hear a thing you're saying...'

Yeah, Pump up the Volume was on C4 and it's definitely on google vids cos I've just finished watching it.
3 parts :

I want to see that Morse thing again cos one of my mates was an extra in some of the crowd scenes and he really stands out in the crowd with his distinctive dancing.

modulations was great. i think mixmaster morris came across really well in it - there's one bit where they have future sound of london doing their ISDN routine. morris says something like "well if you can't be bothered to turn up for you own gig then neither can i". spot on!

all the pre-millenium waffle is a bit annoying if you watch it now though.

probably a bit too far back but, for the very early days of electronic music, the documentary "Alchamists of Sound" about the BBC radiophonic workshop is very very good.

Jip [getting ready for party]: "All that exists now is clubs, drugs, pubs and parties. I've got 48 hours off from the world, man. I'm gonna blow steam out of my head like a screaming kettle. I'm gonna talk codshit to strangers all night. I'm gonna lose the plot on the dancefloor, the free radicals inside me are freaking man! Tonight I'm Jip Travolta, I'm Peter Popper, I'm going to Never Never Land with my chosen family, man. We're going to get more spaced out than Neil Armstrong ever did. Anything could happen tonight, you know? This could be the best night of my life! I've got 73 quid in my backburner. I'm gonna wax the lot, man. The milky bars are on me! Yeah!"

shite.

shite.

It wisnae shite last week at Tubejerk when you was wearing fairy wings over your workies flourescent vest, a pair of mickey mouse white gloves holding 7 glow sticks - all the while taking turns to blow one by one into the 18 differing whistles on strings round yer neck, in between sucking on a dummy like it wis 91' all over again!

I watched Human Traffic for the first time the other day. Most of it was boring. Some of it was ok.

Was amusing watching Geoff from Coupling and the bloke out of the Football Factory have a stoned conversation about Star Wars. I'm sure I've overheard that conversation a million times between stoners.

No shit..... the intro to that film (up to the infamous fire hydrant scene) has some of the most disturbing and effective sound design I've ever experienced in a film (needs to be seen/heard on a good system for the full impact though).

ive got a thomas bangalter ep of music from it- none of which was actually in the film- but is fierce distorted carpenter style stuff. good use of spiral scratch though as well.

The Moog film was good. But it's almost too easy to make a good documentary about subjects like that.

Irreversible is brilliant, attacks the nerves. Dark Water also had good sound design.

it was very well done i thought, the way they had him travel around the world meeting musicians who used his synths from day one as well as more contemporary figures, it had a nice human touch when it could have been an all out geekfest. i think what made that film so enjoyable was the fact that moog seemed to be such a likeable and easy-going guy, the encounter with rick wakeman was particularly funny.

NOt really an electronic music movie but finally saw "I stand alone" by Gaspard Noe yesterday. ace. and there was a franco-synth bit in the truck i suppose
