View Full Version : everything reducing to nothing

my mate told me last night about a theory he read (he thinks in a bill bryson book) that some clever-bod has come up with that argues that 'the meaning of existence' is simply to use up all the energy that was created in the big bang - hence the evolution of humans makes perfect sense as we are fucking great at raping the world's resources and using up as much energy as possible. basically everything ends up at nothing (animals, planets, stars...) and nature actually wants us to get there as soon as possible.

i thought this was a great idea - appealed to the 'there's no fucking hope' part of me :) - does anyone know who came up with this theory or have any links?

any well respecting scientist will tell you that energy can not be used up only changed from one kind to another.

so with that in mind, it is impossible to use up all the energy from the big bag, only alter it from one sort of energy to another.

where did all the energy come from to start with then?

sorry - don't want to degenrate into chicken/egg - just curious to read more about it...

after all its only a theory.

all of the matter and energy of the universe was compressed into a cosmic egg, or plasma ball, consisting of sub-atomic particles and radiation. Nobody knows where the cosmic egg came from, or how it got there -- it was just there. For some equally inexplicable reason, the cosmic egg exploded.

see how "scientific" theory look very much like mythology.

the cosmic egg etc etc.

I guess the short answer is that "we will never really know" and can only speculate how the universe came to be.

but it would seem that the energy within the universe doesn't dissappear, although we as humans do use up the stored energy with in oil, coal etc - as this energy is in a state known as "potential energy" as the energy source can be released from these substances. this energy is then used to produce (most often) kinetic energy that is used to turn turbines and the likes to create electrical energy that we then use in our homes to produce heat and light energy.

a very simply break down of the energy cycle.

what a hopeful theory! much positivity there...

see, this is what really fucks me up about the whole origin of the universe thing. I kind of understand what's going on a few seconds/minutes after the "big bang", but it's before that I can't get my head round. These boffins go on about cosmic eggs and "fields of potential", but what I wanna know is where the hell was this cosmic egg, then, eh????????!!!!!!? It must have been somewhere but there was nowhere for it to be!!! aaaarrrrrrrggggggghhhh!!!!!!!! !

This is exactly the sort of mind bending stuff that Ken Campbell was talking about during his Wack monologue last autumn, based on the series he did in the very early 90s, going around labs talking to beardy nutters.

Well, ANT - i think you'll find the "boffins" want to know as well.
no one will ever know, its all speculation and theories built upon human experience - so we aint ever gonna know, only thing we can know is that what we have created.

The Cosmic Egg was laid by the Cosmic Chicken, and then we get the "what came first" thing, and it all works itself into a huge quantuum soup, and before you know it you are "right where you are sitting now".

in the cosmic chicken shop, eating some cosmic spicy wings. if only everything was so simple.

ah, I reckon complexity is added by humans.

I reckon to the average hydrogen atom, things are pretty simple.

so no-one knows who this dude is then..?

also, i don't think this theory does fall down even regarding what decadnids says... even if the universe is using up all it's energy and heading towards 'nothing' presumably it is heading back to the cosmic egg (jesus i can;t believe im writing all this guff - someone pass the bong)...it's the same amount of energy - just transferred to a different medium...... but i like the idea i originally posted about,, it makes sense when you think how much more like reality it is for animals to destroy other animals... especially hippies and tree-hugggers (joke)

anyway...

I think what cut out is talking about is that humans are stupid enough to use up all the stored energy in the earth rather than use renewable energy such as hydro-electric, solar, wind bio energy etc.

stupid humans.

also if you do a search on the google image thing for cosmic egg you get a nice mixture of hippy images and scientific images -

hippy!!!

I am intrigued about the idea of a comic egg of super hot subatomic
particles as the primordial universe before the Big Bang. If anyone
has more information on the characteristics of the "cosmic egg" and
what might have caused the Big Bang, please respond, or refer me to
someone who might be able to.

{Moderator's note: most current versions of the big bang theory do
not involve a "cosmic egg", or even a comic one. Maybe someone will
tell you about chaotic eternal inflation and the ekpyrotic cosmology
- jb}

apparently the new kids arn't down with the cosmic egg :( its all to do with chaotic eternal inflation and the ekpyrotic cosology

"a brief history of nearly everything" is probably the bryson book

i was reading this and then i lost it
it was great tho'

there was a great chapter about yellowstone national park

its all just a load of shite

they dont know

thats my two cents anyhow

i dont need proof

someone needs to disprove my shit

them experts who tell you how the universe started have nothing either

nothing concrete

animal night train

wow, concrete was the stuff inside the cosmic egg, or the chaotic eternal inflation.

goone, agreed they have nothing concrete, but they are trying their hardest to prove it.

well there was that program recently, something with sufficient gravitas to be taken seriously which was discussed here - at length by grobelaar i seem to remember - about the theory that we are currently in a matrix style computer simulation of what people from the future believe this century was like. which is a headfuck roight there, ted. and doesnt help with the origins of the universe either.

the funny thing with something like said matrix theory is that it doesn't seem more or less outlandish than, say, string theory.

I mean, the concept of everything being built up of resonating strings might still seem fairly straightforward, but implications of the theory such as 11 dimensions raise the bar quite a bit, especially when the other dimensions are explained to "wrap around" more perceivable dimensions.
