What's everyone listening to relax this summer? I am personally loving the new Seelenluft album 'out of the woods', which mixes jazz and acid house so seemlessly it's amazing, and Lucky Pierre, which is just incredibly emotional tear-jerking orchestral electro.

well, i love the esem cd on defocus. still listening to the charles webster album and the black buildings cd by detroit escalator co. (both on peeacefrog). the blaktroniks cd (seduction at 33 1/3) on moving is pretty good aswell. and for a good chill billy holiday is always a good choice (right now i prefer the earlier ones) ...

I am presently enjoying Mark Thibideau's work as Sedative.
Subtle ambient sounds- with twisting grooves-
Perfect for this overcast day.
Cozy.
It could make me think of some march of exhausted gnomes...
Although, I always think of gnomes.
Look for Mark's releases on Substatic (under his own name- and with his brother (Matt) as Repair)- as well as on Dumb Unit. Bloody talented!

i don't know if that counts as downtempo but i'm listening to ISAN's new cd "CLOCKWORK MENAGERIE" pretty often these days. it's a collection of older material that was only released on 7"s, Split-EP's ect. very sunny.
i also like "HERE I GO AGAIN ON MY OWN" by THE REMOTE VIEWER very much.
oh and "RAW DIGITS" of course.
shit i need something to smoke!

I like to listen to Venetian Snare's "Songs about my cats" after work.

I shall be following Zombie's suggestion, I think... no joke - at 'certain times', Venetian Snares is the most relaxing music imaginable. That and the Boredoms.
On my c.d. player right now is David Byrne's,"Into the Eyeball,"and it's fantastic. I can't think of many musicians who have turned out such consistently good work for twenty-five years.I saw him recently as part of the Sydney Festival and he blew me away, the sound was perfect, his band extreamly accomplished and obviously compleatly into it and for the last part of the gig he brought out a six piece string section. Lots of old favourites and plenty of excellent new stuff and when he wasn't singing he kept us all entertained with plenty of amusing patter. What a guy! Anyway,it's perfect for a lazy afternoon, preferably sunny, it's freezing where I am. By the way, if you like that kind of thing you should check out his Luaka Bop label.

-butthole surfers: humpty dumpty LSD (latino buggerveil)-a collection of rarities from mostly the 80's when they were good
-The Bug-www and killer 7 inch. Kevin Martin doing demented ragga core
-Pink Flamingo soundtrack: perfect summer filth music
-Sun Ra: interplanetary music
-cyndi Lauper: time after time, for those quiet introspective moments

I am not that knowledgeable in the downtempo area but some nice chiller techno stuff
I have been getting into is the new Boards of Canada Lp which is a slow quiet genius.
I am also digging Stewart Walker's new release of old unreleased stuffed called Reclamation: 1997-1999. real nice low fi techno with slow evolving minimal rhythms as I am sure everyone knows.
I also dig Amon Tobin, Karsh Kale and Pan Sonic.

why is it we're talking of chill-out sound and no one has mentioned Kruder&Dorfmeister's KD sessions yet? this must be THE archetypal chill album....at least for me - though the most played-to-death CD set ever.
Other than that, definitely check out anything by The Meters, their stuff has been re-released recently, or get their "Funkify your Life" compilation on Rhino. Quintessential minimalist 70s funk - this is as laid-back as it gets.
Curtis Mayfield is high on that list too

being a guardian reading media whore i hear a lot of my fellow media whore flatmate's guardian reader world music like buena vista social club stuff, and manu chao.
i also am big into billie holliday - only early stuff, her later stuff is too depressing cos she just sounds like a clapped out old junkie. ella fitzgerald for that happier jazz mood. summertime means reggae to me - excellent compilation called meet joe gibbs. every track a winner.
also i dj'ed at my mates wedding reception last weekend so i spent a couple of weeks downloading loads of school disco tunes - big favourites on the night were beats international dub be good to me, the jam town called malice, stuck in the middle by whoever it's by, the best of my love by the emotions and of course donna summer i feel love. oh and last tune of night was do your thing by basement jaxx, which is a total belter to end a wedding with. none of which is downtempo but what the hell. oh and let's do it by billie holliday went very well too. i dig being a mobile dj - much more fun than being a serious techno dj, if it's a good crowd.
