Hi,

I think read somewhere that USB has enough bandwidth for about 4 - 6 audio channels.

So it's something like 2 in 4 out max. Most I've seen are 2 in / 2 out....

Cheers

Matt

Both the EMI 6|2 and 2|6 are excellent products, and with the recent emagic acquisition they'll be the best usb audio devices for the Mac on the market, due to emagic's inevitable access to apple development hardware and tools.

The MOTU 828, a firewire box, has some problems. I own one and use it every day, but expect some serious limitations. First, MOTU has shown little support for OSX. This means you'll have to drop to OS9 every time you want to use it, unless Apple releases a CoreAudio generic FireWire driver with 10.2. Perhaps MOTU will release their own, but they have been unresponsive to emailed queries.

In addition, many users experience pops, clicks, and occasional glitches. This has to do with the buffer settings for the unit, but it shows a flaw in its design; the performance of the interface depends on the quality of the cpu to which it's attached. I've had mine long enough to find ways to avoid this, but in doing so i've gained a bit of latency. Still, whenever i boot up logic (or crash a beta, which happens about three times an hour), i get the crackle of doom, which i'll sample sometime so you can loop it and share the joy one gets from losing word clock sync between digital recording devices.

While I do like the emis a lot, I can also speak quite highly of the M-Audio products. I know some people have been less than pleased with their ASIO drivers, but under OSX they're incredible. They have no line noise whatsoever even at full gain, and the mic preamps are crystal-clear.

Ok, that's all for now.
