there was a thread about books a little while ago, so u mite want to check that out. emma - just finished the dark materials trilogy and they were amazing. thanks SO much for that suggestion.

i just started yesterday 'out of it' by stuart walton and it seems quite promising. it basically argues (thru tracing the use of drugs throughout history) that getting fucked is a natural human need. it is extremely well researched and presented (only read like 70 pgs of it so far), and it brings up some really interesting points/arguments.

for example, one argument it mentions (somewhat critically coz stuart doubts that this was the soul cause, but agrees that it might have been a major factor) is that the evolutionary transition between monkeys and cognitive humans actually was brought on by the ingestion of magic mushrooms. makes ya think and its quite an enjoyable read - the big issue said its 'almost as much fun as taking drugs.' :-p

but if u r looking for a book - get phillip pullman's dark material trilogy. loved those books!

Thankyou for your suggestions karitek, someone gave me a copy of Wisconsin Death Trip by Michael Lesy and now I need something less depressing! Actually,it's well worth a look. It's about life in Wisconsin in the 1800's and how everyone turns mad through smallpox, suicide, murder and various other gruesome stuff. What is really fascinating is the book is made up from excerpts from the local paper and actual photographs of these people. Anyone interested in history will enjoy, well maybe enjoy is the wrong word !I don't think it's available in the U.k. but you could definatly get it over the internet.

I just read Rat Pack Confidential... can't remember the writer just now, but it was amazing, a really gripping read: all about Frank, Dean, Sammy and the rest, with lashings of the Kennedys, the Mafia, Cuba, corruption, sex, drugs, depravvity, betrayal, ambition, love, race riots, the works.

It'd be nice for em to come....but with the current $$ (ie. it's fucked and worth less than monopoly money) situation over here I highly doubt whether it would be economically viable.....I was all pumped to go and see BRMC but they are playing the day before one of my bloody exams....I never see any good live shows any more!!!! If it's true that herbert is comin....oooeer that's nice...

karitek, so glad you liked dark materials

he's done four other linked novels (the ruby in the smoke, the shadow in the north, the tiger in the well, the tin princess) set in victorian england whihc are real thrillers, pretty noir but not quite so mind bending - more sociological, brilliant plots which explicatethe social problems of the day...still very relevant. i was completely enthralled again and i just wish he'd write about a million more books so i could read them all the time!

i just finished atonement by ian mcewan (alright - i got impatient with his style, and in the end its all a bit of post modern novelist therapy)

just going to start the master and margarita by bulgakov for the tenth time. i know this is a great book, but i can never get past chapter 1

as for Oz. the boys would love to go again, but there's 5 of them so its a bit of a nightmare financially...
