The only good ringtones I've heard are on those phones where you can record your own, my friend had a sample of his dad playing a hunting trumpet when friends were calling and a girl friend of his saying p**,b**,p***,w*****,sh** when a text message arrived. better than the latest trance anthem I thought.

I have a fone like a breezeblock which has been set to old macdonald since the day i bought the fucker. That's rude.
The worst is people choosing ringtones on a tube train. Fuckers should be rounded up like cattle and made to compose the ultimate ringtone, monty python mouse-xylophone-stylee. Would need a big hammer though.

I admit - when I had a Nokia 3310, I did the whole composer thing - my trax were "Sexual Guarantee" by Alcazar, "Just Can't Get Enough" by Depeché Mode, and "It's Over" by Kurupt - all of which I still think sound decent!!!!

My mum now has the phone, and the ringer is still set to Kurupt....

I've now got a Samsung (not a polyphonic one - I actually hate those ring tones) - No composer trax on it at all - the reason why I like it, is that it has the Caller Group function on it - which works in my favour.

I want a Sony-Ericsson Picture Phone (the square black one with the built in Cam) - but I'm sure it has Polyphonic-Evil on it.

If I do get one, it'll be set to Vibrate all the time....

Its the Nokia 7650, im a total phone geek, I am sad and I download applications for it, I even have a remote control on it that you can put to almost any appliance (but my current TV!). I cannot wait for my upgrade!
Nokia 6600 (http://www.nokia.com/cda1?id=33210) Both these phones work on series 60 platforms.
Its cool though as you can hold it to a speaker and record stuff to use as ringtones, the quality isnt that bad either, you need to experiment to see how far away to hold it from the speaker though! :) You can also assign peoples photos to thier info in the address book.
Whats really sad is I used to have a tone that said 'You have mail master' everytime I got a text, it got embarrassing though.

ha i've had the record-ringtones feature for 2 years now, before it was made popular. i wanted it because i couldn't stand the nokia beeps playing chart hits everywhere. also it had polyphonic ringtones, quite strange ones obviously engineered by japanese programmers. problem was you couldn't transfer wav's to it, just MIDI converted to a proprietary format. i had a lasergun sound most of the time.

well, now things got a lot better - drop reaktor wav's directly on the phone memory. this is what i expect from life... ;)

but eye of the tiger really isn't a bad idea either, i'll have to look thru my MIDI collection...

but paying for ringtones is crazy - i heard 90% are ordered from schoolyards during the breaks. the prices are ridiculous. same goes for "logos" and that shit. i don't understand why people just download MIDIs and transfer them, same goes for pictures.

as for "sonic pollution" i think the situation is getting better with the single-waveform beep-phones slowly fading. polyphonic stuff is not as penetrating in my opinion.
