Actually I´ve just seen that you can get, now hold on!, a USB-based TUBE!!!-preamplifier..!!! lol 8-()
It´s awesome... I also saw some other preamplifiers all working on USB..so.. I´ll find the link for you. Have it at work.

Also the Mbox system from Digidesign (http://www.digidesign.com)

A bit more expensive... 600 EUR

www.egosys.net (http://www.egosys.net ) - i have their excellent u2a (2in 2out), now called u24. not too expensive, reliable, good support, drivers for 9x/xp/w2k/mac os - don't take roland, they let you pay for the same asio driver you get for free from egosys... 8-()

I would say keep USB for midi and keep the audio to pcmcia, or Firewire. USB is too slow and glitches for audio. Check out Egosys Wammibox for lappies. Two cents.

wami box is a multichannel solution. with 2 in 2 out usb has more than enough bandwidth. not a single glitch ever !

also you can't use wami box on your desktop machine unless you buy it a pcmcia slot. for me that's a big disadvantage. also the price is double, but ok, you get more channels.

i agree firewire will be the future.
