View Full Version : Errors on Discogs

I spot a major error on one of my artist pages entered by who knows who. It could have copyright and royalty infringement implications. I try to log in, got login name and password, my cookies are enabled - can't log in! Can't correct the error, don't know who to contact. It's really annoying. Advice?

Never had any problems logging in myself...but when you're in I advise you against going in on the defensive, you'll likely get shredded on the forums like the legendary slydersong. Use the discogs forum rather than chat or music.

OK I managed to log in by altering my cookie settings.
And I've successfully altered the information page. Sorry for that little outburst. There is nothing more annoying than seeing yourself written out of your own recording history. Who are these people? Why are they such busybodies? Don't they look at the song credits on the labels? It's not rocket science! Jeez.

There used to be a merge artists option in the update information section but it has been disabled for god know how long.

yes I know, I was informed that the best way is to find some "duplicate artist" entries and change them around then hope that some admin will actually perform the changes... *urgh*

Having recently utilised Discogs to provide an easy to use catalogue of my collection, I came the conclusion that the discogs admin were quite unneccesarily anal. Although this was an opinion I came to after trying to add my Meteorites album to my collection.
Said album was marked as 'pending' so I clicked on it and there was a four or five different things being fired back and forth to a certain Emma Sola, objecting to track numbering, where the artist details were, whether someone had turned around three times on the spot and invoked the discogs incantation and so on and so forth.
Now I noticed that the album is totally not there at all and can only assume that Emma has decided to let some other mug attempt to keep their catalogue up-to-date - and I probably wouldn't blame her to be honest.
Does anyone use or know of any other catalogues, I was trying to add the few UK hip hop records that I have and noticed that they were glaringly absent - whether this is because this music is somewhere else, or that I've bought the most obscure hip hop in the world I couldn't say...

grobelaar - thank you for noticing that.
it was because i hadnt labelled it 2 xLP, and the second time i hadnt labelled the different vinyl sides A/B etc
ive now done it perfectly as far as i know and i thought it was going to be registered. one of the admin types making the comments was Hazell - is it the one and only? if so can you shed some light Haze? i did everything i was asked to do and according to grobelaar its disappeared!

i've just voted "YES" for 2x12" & 7". now there's nothing to do, just wait when the releases get proper numbers of votes on "YES".
ups, i think that my vote was the one that you needed ; )
here they are:
Meteorites - Milkman 7" (http://www.discogs.com/release/200075)
Meteorites - Dub The Mighty Dragon 2x12" (http://www.discogs.com/release/200074)

good job Will O'
the mods can seem very anal but what they're doing is applying the rules of the database to all submissions (as best they can). This does seem to mean that occassionally info is entered on that's actually incorrect...that's annoying.
Anyway, the releases are in....what the hell is going on with the tracklisting here
C2 NumberOne
A3 Summerblue
D2 Mechanic
B3 Meteorite
A1 Milkman
C3 Ernest Heavyweight
B1 Dracula
C1 Sunsystem
A2 Butterfly
D1 MysticPlace
B2 DontWait
That's some confusing ordering going on there. I though I was bad with my side labelling, I confuse the hell out of myself, but that up there ^^^ is something else!!
oh btw Hazell can barely work out how to type an email, it's not the same person who was harrassing emma over her submissions.

naw it's definitely not the same haze, had a few runins with the haze of discogs fame - I think I managed to insult him pretty badly through some of my editors notes =)
he's been stearing clear of my submissions for a while anyhow...
as for grobs hiphop comment - I'm meaning to get a band of discogs admins together so that I can get the hiphop releases I have in - I've tried a couple of times but usually get the classic "this does not belong in discogs" which really pisses me off because in theory, if you're "building the definitive database of electronic music", it's pretty fucking smallminded to leave out near all of hiphop while simultaneously allowing the whole vengaboys/la bouche/scooter massive to add their fucking eurohouse releases...
so please, discogs admins of the world, join me in the fight against idiots!

it's a very silly situation. some mods are just prejudiced and can't see past the fact that as there is an option for submitting hip-hop, they can't really reject hip-hop submissions. I have had arguments about this in the past on the forums.
However, big changes are afoot and the site owner is recoding the whole site and plans to build a series of sub-sites for specific large groupings of genres, which all feed into one massive database and cross reference eachother where appropriate. That should mean that hip-hop submissions get vetted by mods knowledgable in hip-hop, etc etc.

ah I was aware of an engine update, didn't know that the effects of that are expected to be that far reaching!
would be great, hiphop is actually only one field where I've run into some major prejudice up on discogs.
another interesting topic would be how different language track/release titles are treated, because it is simply retarded to have people capitalize every word in a whole lot of cases when the tracktitles are German imho...
this release caused some major beef between several mods and me, par exemple...
http://www.discogs.com/release/158492 - they still wanted me to capitalize the mehr from Alles+mehr and the hin from Zeit-hin until a friendly mod started taking my side...

and today the tracklisting looks like this:
A1 Milkman
C3 Ernest Heavyweight
B1 Dracula
C1 Sunsystem
A2 Butterfly
D1 MysticPlace
B2 DontWait
C2 NumberOne
A3 Summerblue
D2 Mechanic
B3 Meteorite
so i think it's some sort of nasty bug on Discogs.com

there's no way any mod would have voted yes if the tracklist had been like that, UNLESS the submitter had clearly explained that it was deliberately done like that and that's how it is on the release, for some sort of artistic reasons. I had to explain on submissions for my labels why the sides of the most recent releases were not A+B but V+X or Y+Z.
definitely something odd going on there, and seeing as the tracklist update function is also disabled...no way to fix it at the moment. Bad luck, emma.

oh who cares, im sure it will get sorted.
im sure they've got loads to do anyway.
ANT - thats what i was thinking -- the rules for submission are SO anal (but understandably so) that that is a bug, has to be.
JE:5
29th October 2003, 19:31
There is a bug because I've seen a few entries like that, I think if you put a full stop after the side and number it sorts it out. (but not 100%)
