Don’t you love it when you come across a record that you know nothing about, but as soon as you hear it you realise it’s the one you’d been fantasising about for a long while? If you have a taste for the nastier side of electronic music, this is one of those. I like breakcore, ragga-gabba, digital hardcore, all that manky gubbins, but for a while I’d been feeling like it was getting into a bit of a rut. Don’t get me wrong, I love Venetian Snares and the rest of it, but as another recording artist pointed out to me a while ago, it’s very fucking nihilistic – it’s clever and everything, but that intelligence is just splattered across the sound palette with not a lot of sense of tension and release or real ambition in a lot of the tracks. Absolutely fine if you’re hideously mangled on ketamine in some grim squat in a forgotten corner of some city and you just need high-velocity sonic brutality to propel you through till the next toot on the crackpipe, but as with any kind of music you want tracks that are going to stand out from the pack. Drop The Lime definitely stands out, by virtue of total precision and razor-sharp edits from start to end of every track. The nastiness, distortion and disorientating noises are all present and correct, but what really sets these tracks apart is a whole lot of fucked up bodyrocking funk and a few genuine surprises. The title track comes in with electro synths and samples smashed up all over the place, seemingly totally arhythmically, but gradually settling into a recognisable beat pattern (never repeating though), which grows into a classic breakcore juggernaut, before dropping into a spastic funk thing with some mad R&B vocal harmonies. From there on in the dynamics are just haywire but somehow make sense, and are never anything but original. Even when it drops into a classic darkcore breakdown, the clichés are flipped, the synths never come where you expect them to, but it still feels like it’s made to a plan. The flipside tracks, ‘Dirty Dirty Dirty’ and ‘Stitch Massive’ - which seem to be a version excursion of some sort (or at least share a fart-arsed bassline in some sections) - are a little bit more straight-ahead nosebleed, but even so have surprise jumps and jitters which don’t just act as commonplace glitch tactics but somehow form part of the overall groove. Apart from a few V.Snares gems, I don’t think I’ve heard noise-dance music this tight and tidy this side of the last Trash release, and that’s saying something.

I give this hideous creature

as breakcore goes
or
if you're more in the mood for a bit of Joni Mitchell

Hush now! You smell of booze, and ugh your clothes are like an ashtray - go and have a bath and a black coffee before you say another word.

I know the Ambush, but that Ambush you talked about isn't the Oliver Lieb Projekt?

V Knid esq

Nah it's not Oliver Lieb - it's DJ Scud's label.
