hi brainard, yes cristian ed and i saw it one day when we were all very hung over and needed to watch something mindless and uplifting. "Requiem for a dream" was not really that movie...nicely shot, but pretty boring i thought. "PI", his last movie, much better

brainard

boring?
i was really shocked about the mother went totaly crazy.

ok,nothing new but interesting stuff.

Yeah - that bit with the fridge made me jump - appliances eating your mother?

But how was that dude gonna DJ for his mates with only one arm? - they didn't develop that shocking theme - maybe the sequel?

I liked the fast drug takiing sequences

yeah...i preferred pi as well, but still thought requiem was quite interesting. liked the fact that the mother's addiction was portrayed as just as bad as the heroin one. plus the drug taking sequences were really well done.

darren aronofsky's (the director/writer) next film is batman oddly enough. be interested in what he will do with a big budget (pi cost something like $60,000).

pi is deeper than requiem for a dream but not so stylish produced.
the only message of requiem for a dream was stop takin drugs before they fuck you and pi had more to offer.
the production technique reminded me a little bit of snatch. fast cuts etc.

i saw lately another drugmovie called jesus´ son or fuckhead.
i think the original title was jesus son but here in germany they called it fuckhead and translated it very silly.
the movie was nice. sometimes really funny, sometimes really sad.
it´s not a mindless movie(go for joe dirt instead<- cool shit) and somehow i liked it more than requiem for a dream cause it showed more facettes/sides of the issue and had some splendid little flashy scenes...(mainactor works for a short while at a emergency room/ man with knife stuck deep in his eyeball walks in:"....." "...was my wife..." "should we call the police?" "..mh..only if i die...")
i recommend that movie for you crackheads out there :)

yes your right.the drug taking scenes are really great work.

like in snatch, when avi is coming to london!!
i love that fast filming.

Req was boring, PI not MUCH better. A few movies I liked lately

Bully-good movie by the guy that directed KIDS (do not judge him by that) It's based on a true story of kids (between ages of 16-24 probably) conspirering to kill a friend. Very chilling, the guy from kids is in it, I forget his name.
CKY Trilogy- Not realy a movie, but... Bam and others from Jackass. This is stuff from before and during Jackass, I highly recommend it. Also the guy from Kids and Bully is it also.
Zero Calvin & Aberdeen-two films from the same guy, forgot his name also. Both are very good in different ways. I think they are both based in Greenland and Norway.
Amores Peros (spelling)-It drags a bit and gets a little predictable, but is still entertaining.

yeh i thought requiem was a poor mans drugstore cowboy...tho tha soundtrack is superb...check it out...clint mansell and the kronos quartet.....

i think R.F.A.D. was quite well shot myself.. but it pressures the viewer while watching it and the way it's heading was too clearly visable from the start. but the 'mom' sequences were excellent, and quite unpredicable but it all get a bit too dragged by the end. i havent seen 'PI' yet. (does anyone have a divx of it?) but heard it was pretty good.

i think the whole idea of kids were excellent and original, so i guess this bully movie would be equally good. wasnt kids and gummo and julian donkeyboy by the same director? Harminy Korine or something?
( anybody get them as divx as well ?)

they were both excelent films ruined by shit "electronica" and (except the autechre in pie) and also ruinid by hammy over emphasis on lifestyle elements...

RFAD really fucked me up after I watched it. Sort of almost as if it was inducing flashbacks. Nicely done, the drug taking scenes were really smooth, I thought, something quite groovy about them.

Oh, and the phrase "ass to ass" will stick in my head for a long time, for some reason.

Deccard-Is Jack Black in Jesus' Son.

Kids was writin by Harmonie Corin (or how ever you spell it), but Larry Clarke directed it.

Julian Donkey Boy is one of the best films I have seen. Werner Herzog rules!!! The wind a yarn, a yarn a tail...I cant get over it, I cant get over it. Whats thats guys name from Trainspotting, he is also a very good actor.

i think requiem for a dream is a great movie !
i have seen it very often with my girlfriend...she loves it too !
it also has an awesome soundtrack !

i don't think it is much better than pi...it is hard to compare !
pi has been a masterpiece, but requiem is one, too !

hail to aronofsky, baby !

loads of people i know loved Gummo but i just thought, yeah yeah yeah, white trash, fucked up people, shaky camera work, whispering narrator, seen it all before

apparently, when talking to more knowledgeable people, i hadnt seen it all before at all. but i felt like i had, so that's not really a good thing

Harmony Korine, well he gives good interview. the style press here were slavish about him for a while. him and chloe sevigny (who seems bovine in the extreme to me but hey) were the hot ticket and i couldnt see much justification for it.

the best film ive seen recently was "O brother where art thou?" great soundtrack (bluegrass), intelligent story (based on Homer's Odyssey) quirkily and hilariously done...

Mullholland Drive - i enjoyed, then couldnt care less about, then got a bit obsessed with, then when my knowledgeable film friend (pablo fiasco) told me he now hates David Lynch after being a fan for years because of that movie, it put me off it again. im so damn easily led!

Loz
6th March 2002, 13:06
Oh yes, agree with you about O Brother. Got it from the video shop, didn't expect much, and ended up really enjoying it. It's surprisingly close to Homer's Odyssey, and had some fantastic laughs in it (like the one in the first few minutes when they're trying to get on the train).

As for Lynch, I'm a fan of his stuff. It's not just the types of stories I like, but it's the camera work, he definately creates a mood. I haven't seen Mulholland Drive yet, they didn't show it in my town, so I'll have to wait for the DVD to come out. But I loved Lost Highway, even though it made no sense at all. Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me was good, too, especially Keifer Sutherland's part.

Another film I really recommend is Amelie. It's a French film with English subtitles, and is one of the funniest and sentimental (in a very good way) films I've seen in a long while. Brilliant acting, fantastic humour, and characters you really care about. If you haven't seen it, go and see it.

I saw a japanese film the other day: "Battle Royale" (anyone?)
- holy mother, thatz some f*cked up darkness sh*t!

Highly entertaining tho, like a "real" version of a Manga crossed with "Lord of the Flies".

i really want to see 'battle royale' ,myself.. heard it was great..

are u sure is Amelie is in french? im sure the teaser was in english.. and i was amazed by the visual and the colours&filming was brilliant

6th March 2002, 13:43
yeah i saw that...it was funny as fuck, but always kept you doubting whether you should be laughing...one of those ones that makes you look at yourself.

surprisingly not shocking seeing kids wasting each other with uzis and so on

but what about the "oh, i have loved you in secret for so long" bits...did they lose something in the translation or were they meant to be comedy? i wasn't sure.

Definately in French, with English Subtitles. In a way, that adds to the film, certainly to the atmosphere. Seen it 3 times so far.

I think the mushey bits were intended to make you actually give a toss when the character inevitably got wasted. It seemed to work on me, even though the mush was quite painful to watch when it was happening. I loved the way that these scenes of peace and serenity would suddenly descend into chaos and violence! Are we sick? Not necessarily, so brutal and shocking a film it was, at times laughing was the only option - a natural response. I found the same with "Man Bites Dog".

EMMA-Have you seen Julien Donkey Boy, you may not like it if you didnt like the shacky camera work of Gummo (which I like, I have family from that area of Ohio and he hit the nail on the head), but it has great performances from Werner Herzog and Spud from Trainspotting. Also, my knowledgable movie mate that I have the fortune of living with their DVD collection also is very upset with Lynch and Mullholland Drive. SHe is a huge Lynch fan and was tremendously not impressed with it.

6th March 2002, 15:14
yep, i thought battle royale was similar to man bites dog too. but i found man bites dog more uncomfortable to watch; the rape/disembowling bit is (thankfully) genuinely shocking. maybe battle royale is a bit too far removed for me to relate to it. and i thought the funny bits in BR were funnier than the funny bits in MBD.

i´m interested what you movieheads think about serial experiments lain. i was really impressed how the story developes over the whole series and gives you a lot stuff for interpretations about modern technological societies and spirituality in new forms. if you like anime than this is really recommended. if you don´t maybe this one gonna catch ya(its a very calm series).

btw gummo is one of my favourites too

its not that i didnt like the shaky camera work - i just didnt feel it was as groundbreaking as i was told it was.

i wouldn´t say gummo is groundbreaking. its just a very good outstanding movie. i think the only movie which was groundbreaking and defined hollywood a lot was
citizen kane. camera, lights and story inspired a lot filmmakers and influenced them deeply.
memento was one of the best movies in 2001 :), very recommendable.

very funny watching is timecode (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0220100).
Four frames of simultaneous action that alternately follow a smitten lesbian lover as she obsesses over her partner's dalliances and the tense goings-on of a Hollywood film production company.
the music has a cool jazzy flavor like the sax on bladerunner OST

gummo SUX donkey chodes. lowest common denominator...

rfad was good. i enjoyed the whole mom bit. i though that the characters played by damon wayans and that white kid were two dimensional and trying to be tooooo slick. those two kids were sooo fucking serious all the time... and that track that came on when the white kid was DJing was fucking lame. pi was cool except for that lame jungle track that came on every ten seconds.

I loved Gummo, but I was twatted when I saw it, and was watching unashamedly as prole-porn, like a glorified edition of Jerry Springer.

The best film I've seen lately was Amores Perros - a Mexican thingummy, all about disappointment and dogs. It's been compared to Tarantino a lot, but I reckon it was head and shoulders above his unnecessary machismo - more like a slightly grimmer, more violent Pedro Almadovar, in that it concentrated on bringing out the extrordinary tragic/heroic details in ordinary lives without shoehorning their stories into classical narratives. Uncomfortable watching, especially if you are a big fan of dogs, but rewarding.

Have we mentioned that the soundtracks to RFAD and Pi are done by Clint Mansell, ex grebo messiah of the mightily underrated Pop Will Eat Itself.

Lady E

i thought memento was alright. im usually disappointed by films though

as for something god-awful - MAGNOLIA. terrible film

citizen kane was indeed groundbreaking...so influential it looks cliched now

hitchcock - awesome

eisenstein anyone?

I watched Battle Royal last night and was entertained. I thought the ending was a little lame. And what I dindnt understand was they made thr BRact just because kids where protesting school, a little drastic dont you think?

Strange. I thought it's a French film with Polish subtitles :~] Anyway like it a lot.

O Brother... (just to be sure: we are talking about Cohen brothers movie?) also very good. Saw it twice.

Haven't seen Mulholand

Requiem was smartly produced but really boring, although refrigerator scenes were OK.

Oh! It's my first post on the new board, so hellllooo everybody.

yeah "Battleship Potempkin" - amazing imagery, not for the faint hearted.....

"Birth of a Nation" im f*cked if im sitting thro that dross.
Peter Greenaway can disappear up his own Vortex for all I care.

How about "Breathless" or anything by Jean-Luc Goddard - good stuff

@nothinghere I rekkon that is related to Japanese culture itself (correct me if im wrong anyone), respecting their elders is of great importance, so maybe they were saying "do as your parents / teachers tell you or this might happen!"

For looks, and sheer fun without having to inconveniance yourself with thinking, I really loved The Fifth Element.

Sure, the story is non-existant, and the acting isn't amazing, but still, it's one of the most fun films I've seen in years.

Soundtrack is really good, special effects are exquisite, it does't take itself seriously, which is good, since so many funny sci-fi's do, this laughs along with you. And Gary Oldman... oh Gary Oldman... Love him.

Emma, don't listen to Pablo- I'm sure he goes off things all of the time. He's so unforgiving. I haven't seen M' Drive yet but all the film buffs I know and trust reckon its the best ever. The thing about Lynch is that sometimes you don't like his films initially but they worm their way into your everday thoughts and hang around for years and years. Like wierd vivid dreams or summat. They repeat on you. give it time...i can't wait to see it.

I haven't seen any good films at the cinema for ages - saw Lord of the Rings and hated it intensely.

Saw the Idiots for first time on vid the other day - wonderful. Von Trier never fails to make be cry.

Is the idiots the dogma film where they all act like they have mental disabilities?

baba
14th March 2002, 16:31
Yea, its all about embracing your inner idiot. Spazzing out. Its a bit wierd political correctness-wise but ultimatley its about these people who want to some relief from their daily adult responsibilities so they go around acting like retards. its infectious.
Basically its a coping mechanism. Showing yourself who you really are, outside of your 'social identity'. Very liberating but like all Von Trier films, incredibly sad at the end. He also made Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark with Bjork. Dancer in the Dark had me stuffing all my fingers in my mouth to stop myself from bawling out loud in the middle of the cinema.

nothinghere
14th March 2002, 16:39
Ive seen idiots and Dancer and was not that impressed with either. I appreciated the idiots more, but I dont know to melodramtic maybe. I hear Breaking the Waves is very good and my flatmate acctualy has it on DVD just havnt gotten around to watching it yet.

She just bought Begotten for me on DVD, one of my favorites:]

baba
14th March 2002, 16:48
how could you not be impressed with Dancer in the Dark? Did you not cry? Are you sure you are human? I was an emotional wreck for days afterwards. Lars Von Trier obviously presses my emotional buttons. What presses yours? When did you last cry at a film?

nothinghere
14th March 2002, 16:53

It was just to sensationalized. To much melodrama, it was sad and did pull on my emotional strings, but it didnt help the story or the movie as a whole.
