Help wanted in locating computer programs

OK, I've been looking around in Virtual Intermaweb for some cheap (or preferably free) programs to make sweet sweet music with.

The best I've seen so far by the looks of it was S_C, but sadly it's Mac only (I only have windows and linux machines), so I wondered if anyone knew any cheap or free programs for windows or linux that I could use you make the sweet sweet music to sooth the souls of sailors?

Any help, no matter how unhelpful, grately appreciated.
