why do you ask? rawkus is a first class label - no question. they have ever been somehow 'special' ...excellent productions and always a bit different to the ongoing stuff. love them. but most of the latest releases are sounding like hiphop rec. xyz. sad but true.

IMO, they lost the plot quite a long time ago now, as you say a lot of the releases ended up sounding the same. They also seemed to just be signing up renowned artists for 'come-back' LPs and the like... What was once one of the leading lights in the HipHop underground is now just yet another source of mediocre US HipHop....

Shame really.

As for MosDef - Sorry to sound like supa-hater! - well, he's largely lost the plot too... Busta Rhymes for the 'Noughties' - 'Mr Guest Spot' as it were(which in many cases, including Mos, does little more than turn you into a characature of your-artistic-self) except many of his spots turned out to be little more than warbling... To these ears even his debut LP was a bit shakey(Ironically containing guest spot from Busta himself!), although admittedly containing some nice rhymes here and there... It was all about the BlackStar LP for me - Now that is THE shit!;)

As is increasingly evident with HipHop again these days, a good MC is often not enough to make records and those crews that realise that it's not just about backing tracks for MCs to rhyme over and actually have DJs and producers forming the backbone of their sound are the ones that are making solid forward thinking HipHop... You could say they somewhat benefit from the GROUPs momentum; spurring each other on.

Good hiphop MUSIC is more than just beat-poetry.

Look through the years:

Soulsonic Force
Cold Chillin & Marley Marl
Public Enemy
Gang Starr
Dialeted Peoples
Quannum/Blackalicious/Latyryx
Rhyemsayers - Atmosphere/Idea & Ablities
Anticon/Mush

Did ya'll know that Rawkus despite it's ONCE so-called 'indie' status, they were actually financed by The Murdoch family? (A nephew or summat...) ...Was always gonna go for the 'cash-cow' market.

we need a new mos def album that's on a par with black on both sides. that album is the greatest hip album of all time me thinks, especially that climb tune. it was released in 98-99 wasn't it? and it still goes on in my house every other weekend. i love to make breakfast on a sunday morning whilst listening to the mighty mos, funkin' up the white folks.

As said above, I think by far the best project he has been involved in in the BlackStar LP(also on Rawkus) when he teamed up with Talib Kwali... The overall sound of the LP is really coherent and reminds me of the kind of short but perfectly formed LPs that were put out by Motown(also note parralells of overt soulfulness) by the likes of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder etc. and even, for me, contained a similar warmth.

I think there's some great subject matter on Mos' solo effort, but beatwise I don't think it's anything special and, for me, by the time his LP came out(as happens a LOT in hiphop), as an MC, he seemed to have somewhat lost the 'hunger' that is needed to set a record 'on fire'(Live is a different matter as you have crowd/band/DJ interaction and the vibe to lift you).

Did anyone catch his live shows a few years back? Full band and a real sense of improvision to proceedings(a friends account y'understand)... Maybe he's just not particularly suited to being a RECORDING artist...

I'm with you all the way Hazell, Quannum/Blackalicious/Latyryx - I love the bay area sound, and slug from atmosphere is excellent.

i'm not the biggest kwali fan. there's something about his voice that irritates me. i'd love to have seen mos def live tho.

Totally - His debut LP, for me, outshines the generally more acclaimed likes of Prefuse73 etc.

Hasn't he got a new LP ready to drop?

Ya may wanna check the 2 Morris Nightingale e.p.s also on Merck.

Did anyone hear the Gomma compilation LP 'Anti-NY'?

http://www.discogs.com/release/76837

Comp of early punk-funk & HipHop used and abused by the likes of Funkstorung &, the totally wicked, Protein that also includes original tracks that also fit the sound of the LP...

I got a 12" sampler but wondered whether the LP fulfilled the promise of the single...

the last I heard mos def was back in the studio working with talib and hi-tek on a new blackstar album. I think it was slated for a late 03 or early 04 release.

Yeah that's one of the ones I have at home - Wicked ain't it... The age thing doesn't suprise me - It does sound young(as in wide eyed and sprigtly - Not meant in an old'ns know best kinda fashion!)... Really sounds like he enjoyed making it which is a fantastic quality for any music(IMO).
