i like funk where it's got basslines on a synth rather than bass guitar, and maybe a talkbox or something doing some freaky vocals. plus those drum machine clap sounds. pure electro doesn't really float my goat but i like funk. since this weekend i've been playing 'more bounce to the ounce' by zapp quite a lot, & it's got both styles in there

IP,

Electro Funk (as you may have seen on OL) was the original terminology for the early artists who produced this music - Eygptian Lover, Hashim, Newcleus, Afrika Bambataa, Jonzun Crew, Clintel, World Class Wrecking Cru, Unknown DJ all producing this sound from early to mid-80s. However, I reckon the term has changed nowadays and you will find that electro funk now represents the more sleazy, booty side of electro which is quite often lazily produced beats with some rapping or sleazy vocals. You will find both good and bad...I personally don't dig. On the other hand, if you are merely looking for suggestions for what could be considered worthwhile electro then I could suggest these (from mid-90s onwards)....

Artists:-
Mr Velcro Fastener
Anthony Rother
Drexciya (Dopplereffekt, Japanese Telecom, Shifted Phases, Abstract Thought, Electroids, Dynarec, Arpanet etc)
- Some are just James Stinson R.I.P., some are Gerald Donald
Ectomorph (the early stuff is really good, and unsuprisingly featured one half of Drexciya, Gerald Donald - releases 1-3 to be precise)
Scape One
Decal
Dexorcist
Clara Intellecto
Bass Junkie
Delinquent Dialect
volsoc
Bolz Bolz
A Credible Eye Witness
Carl Finlow (and all his guises)
Ultradyne
Redshift

I will add more when I think of them

That is what I was saying in my initial post, I associate electro funk to the booty-esque recordings of Mr De', Aaron Carl & DJ Assault. Or perhaps even some of the Twilight 76 releases (there are good releases there too...they're not booty).
