check out the roland mc-80. it is a upgraded version of the ol mc-50 mkII.. i purchased used and have been very satisfied with it. not too cheap new or used tho. There are too many specs to list here. (480 ppqn!! shuffle, groove quantitize. Real-time, step-time and Pattern-based sequencing,etc,etc,etc...) check out this review on SOS: review on SOS (http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/sep99/articles/rolandmc80.htm)

Doepfer is making very nice sequenzers. Based on CV/Gate.... :D

Going cheap at the moment, rubbish sounds but not bad 16 track sequencer (will read and save midi files from floppy). I use it as a front end for an emu e6400.

if you like the idea of an mpc but don't need the sampler, akai madce a piece called the ASQ-10. it's the mpc without the sampler. the rubber pads were also replaced with smaller push-buttons. if you're looking for step-sequencer/drum machine style stuff, check out the music and more sq16 sequencer. i've never used it but it looks pretty tempting. something like 13 tracks of rhythm patterns and 3 tracks of note sequences. try http://www.mam-germany.com for more info on that bugger.

Hey ho,
its really rar with hard-seqeuncers, i will me buy a sequencer too,
but i don`t know witch, mpc is to cheap, the mc80 is a good idea, but before i read this post, i thought yamaha`s rm1x, wich is better for live acting???

rm1x is grap. really.
i us yamaha su700 for my livegigs. it's kind of a hate-love, just a matter of taste but you can really have fun with it
if mpc (2000) is too cheap for you, ithink there comes a new mpc (4000or so) which is much more expensive, just especially for you..
no, i think for liveacting the akai mpc's are one of the best you can get

Do you use the sequencer of the SU then ?

ohhh..., sorry i don`t mean that the mpc is cheap, expensive i mean...
hmmm, the su-700 is a sampler i thought, can i really sequence other hardw?!
mam sq16 is a great mashine, but i need a complete sequencer!!!
I thought the roland mc80 is a good mashine.
But no where availale.
@django i work with cubase, but its very boring !!!
I need hardware

There's an internal sequencer in the su700 but you've no precision with it...

hmmm, for liveact not lucrative ??
I will use a sequencer for sequencing reaktor and some hardsynths .I`ve seen it by S. Kuechenmeister, he use it, but as a sequencer sampler so far. But i`m not convinced.
I used a ......*DRUM ROLL*........... MC-303 to sequence all my live sets :D (plus various drum machines synched to it)

@atarythm no no, sorry i did only spoke about liveacting. i only use the su as sampler and midimaster. i use this bastard for my samplephrases and so on. i do not sequence any other equip with. the su don't likes other equipment, it wants to be used alone..
btw anyone @clubachtermai this weekend(25.5)? i'll
make a liveset there this night
isn't the sq16 a 'complete' midihardwaresequencer? what do you mean with a complete seq, monsieur death?

Yes, that's right I'm using it too for the live-acts (I use the rm1x to sequence it...) . I tried one time (just for fun) to sequence other equipments with it and all what I can say is that this feature is only there as "decoration" :-p

It really kind of depends on how you like to sequence. The ASQ-10 is dope in some ways, but for less than half the price you can get two mmt-8's which are more basic hold less info, but are super easy to program, and probably more flexible in the live sense, but lack the timing and feel . If you're into more analog style and you can find one, Notrons are THE SHIT, but again it all comes down to taste. Hell, you could use a 486 and cubase 2.8, or an Atari 1040STe if you want, and all of them are dope in their own special ways. It really comes down to what you are comfortable with. Rm1x, or rs7000's are cool too. Q-80's, or mc 50 mkII's, aren't bad. There really doesn't seem to be a best. I use an mmt8, and a laptop with Cubase 2.8, and that keeps plenty of interactivity available, plus the complex stuff in whatever style I want, when I want. By using a hybrid system, it allows me both loop based and linear sequncing at the same time, adn as long as I'm just running MIDI sequening, and no audio, the stability is there. Two cents.

I think the MAM SQ16 is really crap! It's not easy to operate with... U need some time to get clear of the usage... I had some bad trouble with this machine!
A real nice sequencer is includet in the XBase09! the funkiest drummachine ever! It has a 3 part stepsequencer and is very easy to use.
Another sequencer is the Doepfer MAQ 16/3 nice for experimental loop tracks
If you've got some money to spend u can also buy a SAM 16 from S-N-D http://www.s-n-d.com/ a very powerfull sequencer that lets the deopfer look like a funny toy
and of course I love my MPC2000XL!!!!

I see a lot of you have quite the varied pieces of kit for playing out live. The original question at the beginning of this thread gave me the impression that you need a sequencer you can program "on the fly" while you are also performing with your laptop.
Are you looking to load pre made midi sequence files into it off your laptop, do you need to punch in notes, do you want to be able to mute/un mute tracks without stopping the machine, or digging through endless menus?
I used a Kawai Q-80 for many years and found it to be the equivilant of 4 MMT-8's because you had 32 mute buttons available and each track could be it's own length and midi channel. It was quite handy when playing out.
I've also had an RM1x and MPC2000 and 2000xl.
The new feature on the MPC2000XL where you can assign ENTIRE sequences to each pad for triggering live is superb. Of course, you can still toggle over to mute/un mute individual tracks with the drum pads for really changing things up. It is an extremely fast machine to program on. Copying and pasting sections of
I liked the Rm1x, but found that the multiple levels of menu editing slowed down my writing process. It's a very powerful sequencer though.. Justin Berkovi can rock that box.
I'd stay away from the MAM SQ16. You can't hook a keyboard up to it for entering notes, and there is no dial for entering notes and you have to hit the little up and down buttons on each step to get the pitch you want. It's ok for triggering sample loops, or perc. sounds, but a complete pain for triggering synths.
I haven't used the MC-80, but it looks to have some great features, thus the spendy price attached.
Doepfer MAQ's are fun as hell. try sequencing an effects unit through midi with them running cont. controllers on each line. Ruling!!
and Pongoid is teasing us all with the talk about the Latronic Notron..

...mhm...go buy a mmt8...i use a mpc2000 and an alesis mmt8...mmt8 is cheap but cool...u can record via cubase complex tracks and use the soft-mute buttons to switch sequences on/off...
it´s got 8 tracks...any of them can record/play up to 16channels...got mine for about 80€...

Hi guys,
I saw this thread and thought I'd revive it, 'cause it talks about what I'm looking for: pattern based/hardware alternatives with more live feel to the keyboard + Cubase combination I'm using right now for sequencing.... oh how I hate that computer mouse these days lol
Pitty the SU700 sucks as a sequencer for outboard stuff, the sampling specs look great. Should I go for the RM1x then?
I'd like to hear from others what they use, especially for live performance.
Cheers.

I had an RM1X as my first step sequencer... now an MPC4K... that totally rocking. I'd use the RM1X for near 2 year... but the MPC4000 should be the last hardpiece for a while. IT's a MONSTER!!!
