Saw the new Svonkmayer(spelling???) film, it was okay, worth seeing if you like his stuff. Also Guy Maddin just did a lecture and showed some of his shorts one is called Heart of the Earth and is very good, it is on his new dvd with Arcangel, which is good. Heart of the earth played before every film at the past Toronto film festival. He also showed clips from his just finished film called Dracula, which features a ballet company, it looks very interesting hope I get to see it soon. So, anyone see anything good?

I've seen it before, but I recently got Withnail & I on DVD.

Fantastic film.

For those of you who don't know, it's about two out of work actors at the end of the 60s, who decide to take a break from city life and go to the cottage of one of their's (Withnail) uncle, Monty, for a week. Involves their hopeless attempts to survive on their own, whilst spending a large portion of the film off their faces on booze, dope and some pills. It's really funny, more in the situations than actual jokes, and is a pure classic.

Any chance you get to see this, do so.

Cube - mindblowing work....weird thriller type flick. In my top 3 fave movies ever. Simplicity at its finest and most poignant.

Hedwig & The Angry Inch - heartwarming flick about a punk rock transsexual. A must see for anyone whos ever been passionate about anything (especially music).

Amelie - Jeunet (one of the directors responsible for Delicatessen & The City of Lost Children) unfolds a fantastic script about a girl who takes joy from secretly fixing peoples lives. Excellent cinematography and personal style (as all his flicks are).
**warning** - see it with a special someone. no terrorists blowing up in this one.

Heard these were great (but yet to rent them):

The Last Castle - Story about a military prison...stars Robert Redford and the guy from The Sopranos tv series.

Donnie Darko - something about a little boy's imaginary world....lots
of stylistic film effects and a good musical score, so I'm told.

Donnie Darko is worth seeing, the scenes with the rabbit get eerie, in a good way:] The ending is kinda lame.

has anyone seen "Begotten" yet? it's by the same guy who did "Shadow of the Vampire" (also a bloody good film imo), can't remember his name though. fantastic, absolutely unique film. "Eraserhead" is pop against this. you see a scene and just when it's over you start to realize what you actually saw. mindblowing!

yes and "Amelie" is a fantastic film too.

oh and i recently saw russian film "Stalker" the first time (must be from the seventies). awesome, could become one of my favourites.

i'm really sad that terry gilliam canceled his "Don Quichote" project. would have killed to see that one.

has anyone an idea if chris cunningham is still up to his "Neuromancer"-project? i hope so!

It seems to be doing nothing right now. I've tried but i can't find a thing about it currently - the most recent news is like a year old....so I'd say it's on the back burner yet again.

(still crossing my fingers though)

i dont wanna be a twat and spoil the original movie but mfriad i just dnt like subtitles.. i always go to the cinema for the subtititles enjoy the movie... and have part whiplash afterwards as well... then rent it see it in english and really enjoy it more...
crouching tiger.. be there
la vita e bella ( Life is Beautyfull ).. done that so i might as well watch it in english eh?

SEXY BEAST - really damn good
LONG TIME DEAD - ok... very original... very un-hollywood but if that happens when u do ouija boards.. i must be the devil's great uncle for christ's sake
BULLY - really really crude but super spooky americans kids scare me to death sometimes...
JEEPERS CREEPERS - was very kool but as usual i was VERY stoned.... so dont count on me... but to me this brings back the tounge-in-cheeck Humour of ChildsPlay & Chucky that i really miss in horror flicks

They show just three of his videos, one Björk, the drumming monkey and a third one...

Cube - was that the sort of scifi one with loads of people trapped inside a big 3-d maze? I thought it was really really boring.

I have heard fantastic things about Hedwig, though.

I mostly like Carlito's Way at the moment.

I am very curious about Richard Linklater (Slacker, Dazed & Confused)'s new animated film, 'Dream world' or something like that, even though it was roundly slagged by Jonathan Ross, whose opinion I usually trust.

I watched "Requiem for a Dream" the other day with my girlfriend and her mate.
Its one of those films with little actual plot, making social comment through gritty depiction of modern life. Unfortunately none of us were really enjoying it very much, and then the girls became so disturbed by it that we turned it off 2 minutes from the end! (something I never usually do).

Can someone tell me what happens please?! I'm never going to sit through it again!

I didn't like "Pi" either BTW. Both films I thought were focused on aesthetics (pop-video style camerawork & editing etc) and lacking in content IMO.

lucid rinehead
17th April 2002, 16:03
?...my mate said that about websites that use flash..."mhh just eye candy to fill in where theres no actual content"

its art innit? (films - and web content, sometimes) i seem to remember aesthetics having a fair bit to do with art...can't the aesthetics be part of the content? depends how you define content i suppose...what did you mean by content exactly?

i saw mulholland drive since the last movie thread and i though it was brilliant...the reason i mention it is that it has arguably an even bigger aesthetics to (plot/comment/content/whatever) ratio

and i liked cube and thought sexy beast was weird.

Funny, I just watched Mullholland Dr. last night and I am a huge Lynch fan and I thought it was absolute shite, for Lynch that is. I guess it was supposed to be a series on cbs, but they canceled it. I think I may have liked it more if it where a series, it may have been more well rounded. There were parts that were very good but overall I would say it was very subpar for Lynch. Also, he has been doing animations by himself in his basement, wonder if those will ever see the light of day?

i thought mulholland drive was excellent. i enjoy watching great acting, and i thought the blond actress was superb, she went easily and believably from disney character to crack whore and nearly everything in between. admittedly it was a juicy role, but she really handled it beautifully. also i thought the film captured the atmos of one of those really cool episodic dreams you have in the morning when you've been having a marathon sleep perfectly, something i have never seen in a movie before.

there you go.

i also liked "mulholland drive" quite much. lynch is taking the big piss out of hollywood i think (the scene with the old couple in the backseat of the cab - i cried with laughter...). plus the soundtrack is brilliant (..think of lost highway o.s.t. - rammstein - ouch! ..double ouch!!)

"memento" was quite amazing as well! and i just returned from cinema where i saw "panic room". definately worth the money. mr fincher rocks!

I'm a big Lynch fan, haven't managed to see Mulholland Drive yet, but my favourite film of his has to be The Straight Story.

It's really nice to see him stretch his directing muscles in something that isn't odd for once, and because a lot of people think he's a one-trick pony, it serves as a reminder to what a great director he really is.

The film has hardly any dialogue for it's length, but the dialogue is handled beautifully, just take the scene near the end in the bar. Only about 6 or 7 lines, but so wonderful to watch.

for those who thought mulholland dr. was crap...check this analysis and watch it again:

http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/feature/2001/10/23/mulholland_drive_analysis/

definitely needs to be seen more than once.

anyone see Storytelling? coming to my town next week...really loved Happiness and Welcome to the Dollhouse.

also that Linklater film 'waking life' will be here though the dvd comes out in about 2 wks anyway. general consensus was that it was nice to watch but not the greatest.

loved amelie also, though i'd prob still take 'city of lost children' over it. i'm a sucker for that post-apocalyptic stuff!

i know the bjoerk one (with the robots that weren't good enough for mr. kubrick - leads me to a theory of his death ..err no).

what's the drumming monkey??

do you know if they show "Flex", the short-movie he did with the aphex twin. there's nothing exactly on their website and i neither found a phonenumber nor e-mail adress.

I saw Flex at the Royal Academy "Apocalypse" exhibition - it was a bit of a let down, being a less lovely version of the underwater thing CC did for the Portishead video (which he claimed on a documentary is the promo vid he is most proud of). Comix geeks, did you know Chris Cunningham used to be 2000ad artist Carl Critchlow?

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a brilliant piece of work- John Cameron's first attempt at directing (he also starred in the film)- I highly recommend this one!

Creature Comforts (Nick Park short)- Not so recent, but I am getting over the "Wonderful weather = Perfect time to fall ill - 'sick'." So I've wrapped myself in good cartoons and such-

...Oh and The Princess Bride always seems to make the "sick" less obvious.

Speaking of animations: Has anyone ever seen "The Adventures of Tom Thumb"? or perhaps the even darker (with a kick-ass audio/video fusion) "Tetsuo the Iron Man"? (impressive stop-motion).

Yes BEGOTTEN
one of my favorite all time films. If you like it you should see El Topo or Holy Mountain.

I dont know what it was about MUllholland, but I just thought it was a very predictable and sub par Lynch film, I will definitly watch it agin, but I dont know.

tetsuo rocked. ever see the sequel? believe it or not when i was in high school there was a suprise nine inch nails show in my town and reznor showed the entire sequel before coming onstage. now i'm convinced that 'the becoming' off the downward spiral came straight from tetsuo (the music too, not just the lyrics).

I could see how Reznor could have been influenced- Chu Ishikawa (resp. for sound in Tetsuo)- did a brilliant job on the sound score. +Ishikawa has also been involved with some metal/industrial/nut-bar-percussion bands- (Zeitlich Vergelter and Der Eisenrost)-

I never did see the sequel- How does it compare to the first?

What a crazy job on the audio-visual combination though... I frequented the nausea state throughout the film- It was incredibly well done.
