View Full Version : AAC over MP3

with Quicktime 6.2 bringin AAC encoding to iTunes 4 and MacOS , I guess the time has come for the big shift to AAC - does it sound better?

info:
AAC

Advanced Audio Coding (AAC). Their catchy motto is Store less, hear more.
AAC is what Liquid Audio uses (discussed above). Whereas MP3 is based on
MPEG-1 (layer 3),Â*AACÂ* isÂ*based on MPEG-2.

[Note: DVDs use MPEG-2 *video* encoding, but for audio, nearly all DVDs use
Dolby AC-3 for *audio* encoding.]

Some big companies are behind AAC. For example, Sony, AT&T, Dolby andÂ*
Fraunhofer, the people who invented the MP3. AAC was declared an inter-
national standard in 1997.

AAC is successor to MP3, and is not backwards compatible with previous MPEG
encoding formats. It's part of the MPEG-4 standard. AAC at 128kbps claims toÂ*
offer audio quality comparable to MP3 at 192kbps. More info here and here.Â*

The conclusion from this (pdf)Â*article says, "To expect AAC to overthrow MP3Â*
overnight would be naive, butÂ*there is no question that Layer 3 (MP3) is livingÂ*
on borrowed time."Â*

hey cristian... long time..
i have some aac files.. but the sound quite normal to me but they surely are smaller.
but what happenes when it comes to mp3 players and all the new stuff? i think mp3's foot are now concrete-cemented now that all the extra paraphelia exsist

but i did read that the would help movies to be ripped at 5.1 dolbyqulilty when it comes to DIVX...

has anyone experimented with .ogg vorbis? it purports to be of a far higher quality than .mp3 at far lower file sizes. it is also open source, and free.

personally, i have not yet used it.

I was gonna counter with ogg vorbis as well, since that definitely offers better quality sound over mp3.

Just because some big companies are behind it, and even if aac would turn out to be technically superior in every way, that does not necessary mean that it well outbest mp3.

In particular, I suspect that apple has switched to aac because it allows for drm, and that's something which should keep a lot of digital music enthusiasts far away from the aforementioned format.

I found one comparison between the three formats online, though I have some doubts concerning the scientific method...

hehe yeh apple had to make the new ipod a lot slimmer and slicker since there are by now several ipod clones out there that do everything ipod does plus more, are pretty much same size & weight and cost half of what the ipod does/did....very interesting also the fact that usb 2.0 is now supported, is apple losing faith in firewire?

i'll have to do a little research, but i remember a while ago reading some stuff that a guy was doing that was supposed to be smaller in size than a normal mp3, and equally as good as original recordings. he also tested his digital files against some original studio recordings and claimed to have gotten better results. the company was called "sound archealogy" or something like that. if i remember right, he's also working on information storage on a quartz crystal that could hold something like 20 terabytes on a crystal the size of your pinky-nail using cross-referening laserbeams to read and write the info. there's amazing things in the works... along with scary things too.

Yeah, yeah, features, features, features - its for this reason that the clones will run twice as clunky, crash twice often, last half as long and need recharging constantly - I want a music player with long battery life not a video player or porn viewer or a games machines - there's boxes that can do that far better...

I think the convergent technology thing is a bogus route - you only have to look at modern computers to see the problems that following a jack-of-all-trades route...

I mean I'm dreading buying a new mobile phone, I just want something to communicate with my friends - I don't want a crap games machines, and a battery draining video player...

I finished reading that Philip K Dick anthology the last story was called Nanny. It was set in the future where everyone has these Nanny robots to look at their kids. This one family has had their Nanny robot for years - but it starts to look really bashed up, they think its just wear and tear - but one morning it comes in utterly smashed up and then a few days later another Nanny robot utterly destroys it, right in front of the kids. Turns out the robot manufacturers have designed the robots to battle each other - so older models get demolished and the owners have to continually buy the newest latest model to stay ahead of the game...

Considering it was written in 1952 - I'd say that pretty impressive bit of foresight.

I´m getting more and more nuts to see how people stand on streets just looking on their mobilphone - fingering the buttoms fast, trying to read/send a sms.. up to many times... some of them even tries to move at the same time?! It´s so classic! Everywhere you look - your eye will catch a person looking on the mobilphone.
THat´s sick!! I wish we could try the days backthen without mobilphones!! That was life.

(yes, I do have a mobilphone - but it stands in this charger at home because of a crashed battery.. and I really don´t want to go around with it.)

im totally ashamed of this but i can sms without looking at the phone....

grobelaar
30th April 2003, 20:01
I think mobile phones are real revolution in communication, but I only use txt when someone does not or cannot be contacted and needs some info - otherwise you might as well ring them up - you spend more time and probably money faffing about doing the text - I'm not big for ringing people up, didn't have a phone in the house when I was kid. But honestly couldn't organise a clubnight without one - an absolute neccesity and sometimes you spend so much money ringing people up...

All the rest of this horseshit that is coming along for mobiles can fuck right off...

Although I reckon one of the first services for 3G will be premium rate live porno... Just video some women stripping off - and have it fed to a bulk 3G video server - so people can just dial in to watch - I bet you could charge a fortune per minute...

..

i feel that aac will become outdated far quicker than ogg audio codec.
i believe that xiph are also developing a video compression codec, and are looking for developers on both sides of the industry to move the project forwards

AAC will cane ogg vorbis - Apple have chosen to support it and it is backed by all the biggies in codecs, it is also part of the mpeg4 technology.. I think it sounds very nice, so not complaining ... Liquid Audio is the best sounding codec , and it is based on aac , but no-one is allowed to compress in liquid audio ... iTunes 4 now has artwork pane , and I'm busy pasting in all the covers from AMG into itunes ... oh dear ...

3g ain't never gonna take off, and that video server thinger wouldn't be technically feasible if it would...

still, I don't know what kinda rates you peeps have in the uk, but around here a sms can be a lot more cost-efficient than a fone call...

Hahahaha.. that´s insane!!! So all this shit about piratecopies of CD´s and stuff!! It´s definately not the consumer who might be responsible for the audio industry´s "fall down the stairs" - it´s the fucking developers - coming up with a Id tag including ARTWORK and LYRICS!!!????? Yeah, no doubt it will get pretty crazy going to the local record dealer for cd´s in the future... unless it´s CDR´s....

muhahhaha

Damn - they can´t help it....
release the shit on vinyl instead..

Ogg Vorbis will get used by all the hobbyist linux heads and will probably develop/improve at a faster rate than AAC. AAC will be "industry standard" and is fucking good quality for the file size.

real player idtags have this information capability already, don't they?

ok - i admit, the rebel in me likes and uses ogg vorbis for my own HDD copies of cd's for the clarity.

I'm interested to see the development of their video codec also...
