I think avatar is more than anything a sort of proof of concept for him regarding his motion capture engine and new 3d Digital cameras. i think the cfact that all the humans in it are CGI (although its really hard to tell) means you dont get that really wrong difference between real people and CGI folk (like jar jar)
Bottom line is, its got flying things, and lots of guns and aliens and is in super duper 3d, that sounds greta to me. And if it goes well Battle angel is more likely to be finished and that is a great thing.

Nah, but then Wall-E, The Matrix, Kung Fu Hustle, Toy Story, Aliens etc etc aren't arthouse masterpieces either are they? They're just good, popular films.
stop angsting about it and just fucking enjoy the fancy pictures
I think that's the point... I'm not quite achingly lowbrow enough to be able to enjoy it just because it's got a massive budget and appeals to people who'd presumably be satisfied with a kaleidoscope full of smurfs.
I genuinely think it's going to a really shit film. But I'm probably going to see it anyway because I want to see something 3D. Probably the best way to go see sommat like this... it can only turn out better than I'm expecting :)

I mean 100% CGI = motion capture + computer rendering instead of video manipulation
les diamond
15th December 2009, 15:06
`The whole thing, I believe, is CGI, though some of it is motion captured humans. Like Sin City, everything that is on the screen at any point in the movie has gone through, at minimum, a digital filter, and at maximum, was never “real” in the first place.´
James Cameron says: "Avatar is the single most complex piece of filmmaking ever made. We have 1,600 shots for a 2.5 hour movie. It’s not with a single CGI character, like King Kong or Gollum. We have hundreds of photo-realistic CG characters."
Burnibus
15th December 2009, 15:06
yeah my understanding was that they captured the motion of the actors and mapped their face and facial expressions then recreated these real movements and motion inside the 3d virtual world they created, therefore there is not difference between avatar peeps and human peeps in the way that they interact with their environment.

Yeah def. I'm not convinced about IMAX though. If you sit in the right spot in a normal cinema, the screen fills your field of vision. What do get from not being able to see it all? Not a rhetorical question... really want to decide if I can be fucked to go IMAX in brum :)

I once went to the IMax and sat right in the front row, down on the left. I couldn't see the entire screen at once from there, and had to crane my neck and swivel my eyes quite a lot.
Ended up with a massive headache.

18th December 2009, 11:13
well i went once to see one of those crappy documentaries and was mightily impressed at the effect completely blocking out all peripheral vision has with the big screen. It took on a kind of 3d like effect like your brain is more convinced what its seeing is real and tries to process it differently. Im sure it was curved as well which might stop that close to the screen feeling all though i do remember feeling slightly wonky. This was ages ago and maybe someone whos been more often will have a different opinion.
So my reasoning is, if the film is going to be crap id at least like to give it a go at the imax.

It was my first ever 3D film also, and it engrossed me totally, there is oodles to look at and the driectioon of the scenes is such that you often feel that you are doing things in the forrest like running through trees etc. Not sure how it will hold up on DVD but as a 3D experience its brilliant.

saw it about a week ago in 3d. was fairly skeptical when i first heard about it but ended up really enjoying it to be honest. i felt like a kid watching it.
the story is pretty cheesetastic and it has an obvious moral/political message to it which only adds to the dairy factor, but none of that stopped me from sitting in awe for half the movie. is that mainly because of the novelty of 3d? probably, but that novelty hasn't worn off yet.
also makes me think about where the whole 3d media thing will go. it's coming to television at some point and it goes without saying that it'll come to gaming too. really though what i am looking forward to is genuinely GOOD films coming out in 3d. if it can make a cheesy hollywood blockbuster interesting for me, then imagine how amazing something as good as bladerunner would be?

Avatar follow that trend you are seeing now that tries to mix mythical fairy tale looking people with technology. Even the name is like that. Stupid. Besides the aliens have cat ears and a cat's nose. Do they stick one leg up and start licking their asses? SCI-FI these days just flat out sucks. If CGI animation wasn't bad enough.

I saw it this morning and really enjoyed it. Good shit scifi. Dialogue and exposition were apparently written by a severely retarded descendant of Enid Blyton. Looked great in 3D. Completely forgot about the CGI fairly quickly.
Dal-tech's right though. The aliens weren't realistic at all. They were in focus for a start. And didn't float around in the sky looking a bit like bollocks blurry photos of balloons, clouds and washing-up bowls. On the plus side, they were bright blue and unfeasibly anthropomorphic, as if some earth-twat had just completely imagined them.

The racist thing seems a bit absurd.
Aliens had a bunch of slimey barbaric BLACK aliens that tried to fuck, eat, impregnate everything they saw (the implication was that the stinger tail was a phallic symbol and there's clearly a moment in Alien at least where the act of rape is implied)
No one said Alien/Aliens was racist did they ? In fact, at one point they argue wiping the fuckers out - nuke em from orbit !!! is that not a bit racist (think burke tried to point that out and got the wrath of ripley to deal with as a result). So is Ripley some sort of KKK uberlord now in this politically correct age ?
I can see the point but that's a perception on the part of the viewer, I really really doubt that those were the intentions of the filmmakers subliminal or not.
I think the whole argument there is quite silly, just folk being needlesly pedantic.
The film is pretty good I thought, entertaining for sure.
