wot sort of iMac is it... new one with flat screen - or old one with candy coloured 60s TV box?
Assuming it isn't Mac OS X... If you hit the Apple icon in the top left hand corner and go to 'System Profiler' it should give you a window with the complete run down of the computer's hardware and software...

it depends on what model you got. if you're using os9, go into the apple menu and pull down to "apple system profiler" in the profiler, click on the "devices and volumes" tab. a couple lines you should see some lines that say Internal ATA (followed by a number). your cd drive should be listed here and it will either say cd-rom, cd-rw, cd-rw/dvd or something like that. if you're in osX, go the apple menu and pull down to "about this computer" and click on the "more info" button. that should bring you into the system profiler screen and you do the same thing you would do in the os9 version (devices and volumes tab, etc..)
