It could be worth the trip to Berkeley to Moe's second hand book shop and Rasputin records.

Amoeba's well worth a peep.

Try Chef Jia's in Chinatown for great cheap hunan food. Pancho Villa in the mission is good for cheap mexican Taqueria stuff. You might get lucky with the Mariachis ;) If the video game conference is in the moscone, then El Balazo in the alley behind the newspaper building (The Chronicle, I think) is another really good Taqueria.

City Lights bookshop in North beach is well worth checking out. Mario's cigar bar near the park nearby is a nice place for quiet drinks and usually some nice bebop in the background.

It's been a good few years since I've lived there but some other places that used to be good were The Beauty Bar in the mission.

The Top used to be good for a boogie on sunday nights. Nickie's bar next door to it in the lower haight had great funk and soul nights.

Nearby, Tweekin records was great for old house records. Worth bringing a big record box and filling it up with all the old classic Theo Parrish, KDJ and whatever that are really cheap in the US compared to here.

Dunno if all this stuff is still there but worth looking into anyway.

And the Zagat guide was pretty good for food and some bars/music.

I was going to say Tweekin. Although I was last there in '97.

Also the rest of Haight-Ashbury just for the history and the weird shops.

And If you can score a burrito in the mission your stomach will be well pleased.

There will be weird stuff here: http://www.exploratorium.edu/

yeah I wonder if tweekin is still there even?

Pancho Villa was my favourite place for burritos in the mission and it's just around the corner from the 16th and mission BART station. El Balazo near the chronicle downtown was just as good though.

The Top in lower haight used to be mega when Iz (or Diz) or whoever it was played there. Wonder if it's still going.

Also, I remeber the End Up used to have some decent stuff that went on from Sat. night until early mon. morning a bit like Berghain.

Other good places include Shalimar, the diviest but bestest Pakistani restaurant in the diviest Tenderloin neighbourhood. Queues out the door of pakistani's at times.

Uncle Vito's near Union square had savage good pizza. Blondie's is an institution for junk food pizza :)

*A very small record store, but I liked the selection - I've only been there once, but I really liked it -...mmm- maybe it was cause the day I went they were serving free cranberry and vodka drinks to everyone over 21yrs old that day...

Not sure if the store still exists, but if it is, I do recommend it..

no fuckin way. They used to be 3 dollars!!!?!!?! wtf. I mean curry was expensive compared to the UK, but chinese, taquerias and pizza were really cheap compared to here.

Sushi used to be cheaper (Sanraku Four Seasons was good) tho still expensive. There used to be lots of good cheap vietnamese places in the tenderloin too for Nasai Goreng and things like that.

yessum, sushi is good in SF. I lived near this one and it was my favourite. Not so expensive as far as sushi goes but sooo fressssh.

http://www.sanraku.com/

probably not too far from where you are likely to be staying in all likelihood.

Oh and even though, like les diamond says, SF is expensive you won't find it all that expensive compared to london say. though the dollar has got strong so maybe now isn't the best time to say that.

Its worht it. Drive along route 1. Its wonderful.

I stayed at this amazing hostel in Saratoga among the rewoods. It was a really great place. Lots of strange but interesting people and you can explore the woods and the cabin is very comfy and plush

ah right, I lived just near macy's there.

you are quiet near some good of the restaurants I mentioned then. Uncle Vito's is just little up the hill near the corner of Powell. El Balazo is just the other side of market street. There's some good cheap Thai restaurant's on Post Street (e.g. Thai Stick and Thai Ginger). And Sanraku, the really good sushi place is on Sutter or maybe the next one up the hill.

Shalimar is just on the edge of the tenderloin.

There's a great italian ice cream place on the the tram line near union square too, think it's the more western line (mason line maybe?). and blondies bad but good pizza is at th bottom of powell too i think.

the owl tree bar was fun for mega strong martinis too. and the clift is well posh.
