here's a trailer for spirited away: i'm not normally a fan of disney films, so what's special about this one? http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/spirited_away.html

its not disney film i.p.
just distributed by disney in the west. it is a cool film about a little girl who gets lost in a hot springs resort for dieties/gods etc.

disney did a good job dubbing into english but the japanese version is much, much more interesting.

spirited away was really awesome. its from the same guy who did mononoke hyme.
btw the dubbing from mononoke hyme was done by neil gaiman and i think he did a good job.
i´ve only seen the first animatrix episode and can´t wait to get more.
have anyone seen parasite dolls yet?
is it good?
i´m looking for some anime series like lain or cowboy bebop.
any tips?
i tried noir and hack//.sign but they are crap...

when a japanese movie like that is translated and dubbed into english, they change alot of the nuances and sometimes skip over idiosyncracities completely.

isn't it hard to translate japanese into english and maintain the integrity of what was orignially said? I have heard that there are sayings and I guess patterns of speech like you are reffering to that don't really have any proper english translation.

Deccard: Are you running a pc or a mac? I am trying to copy lain for you- but I am having some trouble for some reason- SVCD... Still on it though.
Carracho is okay for anime downloads-
IP: I have the same love/hate with Disney- I don't know why... I grew up on them (adored fantasia), but haven't been too into the recent additions...
Gunjack: Totally agree. Dubbing is brutal- You really benefit from the original recording for reactions etc. -Even subtitles get sketchy at times- I recently saw an anime for the Images Festival, here in town- The subtitles were more confusing than anything- but the film was extremely (visually) interesting- Look out for Tamala 2010: A Punk cat in Space- (dir/written by trees of life). Dub-over would have killed it.

yeah man, i mean, on ghost in the shell the guy asks the robot chick whats wrong and in english she says: 'a loose connection' and in japanese she says 'the signal..... i am having my period.' (denpa.... seri chu da)
big difference.

interesting. but then why wouldn't they translate it just like you did here? is it because of what she says?
also, where did you learn to speak japanese gunjack?
I have have been thinking of learning a foreign language and japanese has always interested me. is it fairly hard to master?

the reason that they dont give literal translations is because somewhere in a room, someone in the trnslation, re-writing department thinks he knows better than the original writier of the dialog. also in japanese, the amount of information conveyed with just a few sylables makes it difficult to cover evrything....
as for learning japanese, i have never studied from a book, i learned simply by being immersed in japanese language for the last 3 years. this is why i do not have the typical foreigners accent and why i am able to speak fluently with the ppl on the street. i have friends who have studied japanese for 10 years and still can not understand the ppl on the street, because the japanese you study in books is mostly the ultra polite version of things and conjugation is only taught through keigo (the super formal version of the language)
the best way to learn a language is by living in the country where that language is spoken by the natives.
i believe japanese is fairly easy to learn if you approach the speaking side and leave the complexities to deal with as they arise, rather than using some rigid cirriculum to study point by point.
ok i gotta go teach some english to the kids!
see you after work!

There are some other movies of Hayiao Myazaki (or however it's spelled), the one who made Mononoke and Spirited Away. The two i've watched are: Nausicaa From The Valley Of The Wind and Laputa, Castle in the Sky. Both very nice movies, they also had some influences on the newer ones (e.g. some people reappear in different shapes in the latest movies).
@deccard: You should watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. 25 episodes ..

Deccard: Oops, sorry- I misunderstood and thought you were giving examples of series' you wanted...
Gonna race you to a recommendation- A friend of mine has been flipping over Noiseman Sound Insect (Koji Morimoto)- I haven't seen it yet- but apparently the animation will blow your mind...
Also- Just found out that Peter Chung (who did æon flux) will also be doing one of the animatrix episodes! That'll surely be fitting!
