View Full Version : Snow Hysteria..

Just flicked on morning telly (due to my insomnia - it's a day off for me), and am getting pretty sick of the gobshites on the telly hamming up the snow situation. It's like they got caught out on monday, so now they don't want to be caught out again, but they're going waaaay over the top.. I'm in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, and there is NO snow outside here.. any little flurries we've had over the past 48 hours have quickly turned to sleet due to our proximity to the coast... the Met office forcast backs this up.. yet the Anglia TV forcast is predicting 4-5 inches, and my mum is telling me that people arn't coming into work round here because "OOHH, THE SNOW IS SOOOOOO BAD!!".. I drive on the back lanes round here every day in my van, and it was maybe a little icy, but perfectly passable, in fact yesterday, it was more slushy puddles than anything else.. I drove over to stansted airport to drop off 30 boxes of paper yesterday- plenty of sleet and fog - but no snow..
I'm driving to hull to play some records tonight, I called the organiser last night, and the situation is pretty much the same their, a little bit of snow, but more likely sleet and rain.. The GF, coming from Lithuania, thinks it's pretty funny seeing how people react here to what would be a daily event from november to february where she comes from.. I know it's bad west side, but telling people not to go out, when the roads over this side are perfectly clear.. I guess the one good upshot is the roads will be empty...
so what's the snow really like near you, I mean REALLY like?

This was yesterday. Not that much better today. Tried to get into work, slid into 2 verges, despite going only 10 mph, so phoned in and asked for a day's leave. Living right in the country means none of the roads around here were treated last night, so I can even make it to a major road.

fucking hell, it's absolutely pelting it down (as much as snow can pelt - there is a lot of it falling from the sky, certainly)
my webcam can't capture it, as it's falling too quickly, so it just looks blurry. Glad I came home again.

It's just wet and horrible here, but no snow. Apparently the north of the county and anywhere on higher ground is fucked though.

We had proper snow here twice... 4-6 inches. Our road (tiny with about 15 houses) was a skating rink... fairly tough to get cars in and out.. but once you'd skated 50 yards to the main road it was all fine. Was worse out in Southwell etc.. everything ground to a halt :)

I did actually mean the UK, but I was just referring to how people/councils/transport systems there are not used to snow.
But if you want to rant about that bunch of workshy porsche driving old women scum banker cockends down south I'll happily join in.

hahaha - you guys get a wee bit of snow and the world stops!
Here, we drive without a second though even if there's 30 centimeters of fresh snow. The one day in my whole life I couldn't make it to work was because of a meter+ worth of fresh snow that dropped in 1 night. Spent the day digging out! I've even got my photo graphic evidence.

I love the way the English don't bother paying hundreds of thousands of £££ to clear snow that is going to melt anyway. A couple of days staying at home never hurt anyone. In Germany they'd have spent the equivalent of 5 pre-school facilities just to make sure people can drive about. I am very proud we don't spend this money on such a waste... it snows like this once in 20 years so we should just stay at home and enjoy it.

all this crap about the country losing 5billion because nobody went to work just doesn't stack up either. the money i didn't spend on mon and tues was just spent on other days. its not like it disappeared. and city stocks and shares are not real money just speculation.

I don't have a problem with taking time off work, or things stopping, I just wish they'd stop going over the top about snow that increasingly seems to be non-existant, because it's bloody annoying to stay in because you were told that it would be like siberia outside when in reality it turns out to be a sleet shower, it's bollocks..

the trouble is, if they actually got it right by accident, and there are actually blizzards I could well be stuck out in my car in it... I think really I should just buy a second hand Range Rover and keep some snowchains & a rifle in the boot.. could be very usefull both for unpredictable wintery weather and also the end of civilisation...

yup, sounds like a plan - get a Land Rover - rather than a Range Rover - you'll look less like a ponce. Also make sure you have the following items.
A Swedish Army Trangia
http://www.transworldsurplus.co.uk/images/products/trangia_stove_set.jpg
A storm shelter (incase you leave the vehicle)
http://www.penroseoutdoors.co.uk/acatalog/Storm_Shelter_400.jpg
a good sleeping bag / some blankets
a knife, some rope / cordage
a flint and steel / a lighter
you'll be pretty much sorted then. Of course if other people are stranded you can defend your Land Rover with the gun you're going to take.

that is some incredibly short-sighted and self-centered reasoning there. how much did Monday last week cost the United Kingdom in human lives alone due to ambulances not operating normally?

that's very nice for you, that when it snows you can sit at home and put your feet up, but unfortunately at my work we have a sadistic area manager who thinks nothing short of all out nuclear war will stop us acheiving our multidrop targets of 98%.. so while you're warm by your fire, you can think of me and my transit van on it's roof in a ditch somewhere...:)
