I tried to go to work this morning. But the A1 was a failure. Heavy snow settling on the road despite traffic going down it, and being gritted the night before. Absolutely rammed with traffic going at 20 mph. Didn't fancy spending 3 hours getting to work and then 3 hours back, so phoned in and took a day's holiday.
Schools closed to kids today, anyway.

That's exactly what I said to Wiz this morning. The only theory I have is that the drivers and tube staff can't get to work.

At just under £900 that's just a little bit mad, considering it's made for arctic conditions. I understand it's worth paying a bit of money for a good jacket when the weather in winter is very often below freezing, but my Fjällräven cost less than a third of that and it's got a detachable lining. So ner :-p

3rd February 2009, 08:25
Darrell has gone a bit winter coat crazy. It's all about layers. I'll stick with my layered approach and not wear one huge mother fucker of a coat and then realise if I am too hot I can't actually remove anything, besides the one coat and then end up freezing.
Outer layer choice for me is my Westwinds Ventile Arctic Smock
then under that I wear a load of layers depending on the weather conditions. job done.

"Quality" is one way to describe it :) Did look pretty going though all the snow this morning.
People have done the same thing here with the "still snowed in" thing. What makes it look bad is that a lot of the people here live quite near to one another (they all live out in Essex) so how some of them managed to get in at 8am and others called in at 09:45 to say they couldn't make it?... Hmmm. Boss is already suspicious of them.

a couple of years ago, when I worked for the council, it was a bit snowy. Every single member of the council staff made it in (around 700 people, bar people on holiday and off sick) apart from 1 woman, who said she couldn't get out.
What made matters worse, is that another person in her department drove past her road on the way to work.

I've got the bonus of living further away from school than anyone else, by quite a distance. Easy for me to use snow as a skiving excuse. Although I did actually try to make it in yesterday (gave up after spending an hour on the A1 at 20mph, watching the snow lay despite traffic being on it) and today the school's closed anyway.
