found this in a newsletter:
Hi,
you might have got this via some newsletters yet, but to make sure no
other DJ will loose his goodies I also post it in here - sorry.
I know this happened a lot to many people in the past so I won't make a
big fuss out of nothing but the following is getting def too far!
DJing in VIGO and LA CORUNA (northern spain) last weekend I had two
great nights in cool clubs with perfect people (shouts to VADEMMECUM and
HOUSE CAFE!). Only the way back to Frankfurt was a pain in the ...
Although many DJs in Vigo and La Coruna warned me about the
luggage-situation at Madrid-airport I had to check-in my case for the
return flight - at least I took out all the classic ones but there were
still around 40 records left in the flightcase. I mentioned the warnings
of the guys in Vigo and la Coruna to the IBERIA employees when doing the
check-in but it seems they did not really pay attention to it.
So what happened then was a joke! They did not put my case thru at
Madrid airport to Frankfurt so it did not arrive here. Today (three days
and five phonecalls later!) IBERIA delivered it to my home and I saw at
first glance that it was broken up. After opening the case I just saw
one(!) record left ("iz & diz" on silver network... thanx mr. thieve, I
really like this one
what is this? leaving one record in the case? thank you C-Rock, take
this you looser? What message is this?
However I am not the center of the world so please note that the same
happened to DJ Nacho from Vigo a couple weeks ago and to Carl Cox the
day before my tunes got stolen. Carl's got stolen on the way to his gig
which is even worse!
TO AVOID MORE DJs WILL GET INTO A SIMILAR SITUATION I WOULD ASK YOU TO
SPREAD THE NEWS ABOUT THIS... AVOID MADRID AIRPORT, IBERIA AIRLINE AND
TRY TO TAKE AS MANY TUNES AS POSSIBLE IN YOUR HAND-LUGGAGE - AT LEAST
THE CLASSIC ONES!
Carl Cox is already talking to spanish media and I did the same overhere
in Germany. It seems IBERIA and the MADRID airport organization knows
about this problem but don't do anything against it. Having in mind that
Sonar-Festival is coming up as well as the spanish-holiday-season I
guess it wasn't the last record-bag cracked up this year.
I know there are many people in the world that have more serious
problems than just a couple stolen plastic-slices so I stop complaning
here. Please do not get me wrong - I just wanted to spread this
information as it might help somebody. And just to mention it here: THIS
IS NOT A HOAX!
That's it for now... sad greetings from the old europe and to those who
has stolen my records: I HATE YOU!
peace,
C-Rock

sounds just like german mail - it's normal letters are torn open and packages never arrive. i think it's also a consequence of how the working people are treated today. if you hate the company you work at it's a small step to theft and fraud.

I have always wondered about that happening.
actually this one guy I used to know worked for Delta airlines and was stationed at national airport right outside of washington dc. anyway one day he was hauling laugage and he came across a record box and broke into it and stole some of the records inside. shady buisness indeed.

That's terrible... seeing as I have to buy a new box, I think I'm going to find one I can carry on maybe.. or one that dosn't look like a record box....

I'll remember never to fly delta as well if I ever come to the US........
A few years ago Austrian Airlines , or someone at Frankfurt , stole my record box completey... 96 , and full of classic chicago... I will try and carry-on , but there are just too many hand baggage restrictions , and it really fucks up your back lugging vinyl around... what can a DJ do?? - if the tunes get nicked , then thats that... a pisser , but not the end of the world...

I always try and carry on, although when coming back from the us I managed to get my box all the way to the door of the plane and then some guy asked to check if it met the size restrictions for hand luggage. Of course when he tried to lift it he realised that it was well over the weight and chucked it in the hold.....came out pretty battered but all still ok

Makes me think a lot more about playing live instead, my live shit is insured and replaceable, my classic dancemania isn't...

What about dj-box insurances?
wheezer
19th April 2003, 11:45
there was some talk about insuring records in another forum a while ago - basically there's certain problems with insuring techno records, because they generally have no established market value - in the sense that there is no price guide available...

if someone'd steal my vinyls i would be forced to kick some ass. put all the crew in a bag and work them out with a bat - allways hits the right one.
btw why not just put a huge padlock on your crate. they wouldn't go so far to break that would they?

My Box had a padlock on and it still got broke....

Sorry to hear this!
I recommend finding (I believe there are a few out there- There is one called a skypak)- a backpack that holds around 50 records- It has wheels and a retractable handle...
It fits nicely in the compartment above the seat-
Kind of dorky looking- but it is better than a flight case with only one record bouncing around in it. (very sorry about that)
I believe the weight restriction is 12-12.5 kilos per carry-on. Best to take as many as possible on the plane with you.
Mean thing to take someone's music collection.
Don't worry Weishaupt- All about balance to the force- You'll probably fall in love really soon or something nice like that.

yes it is. and that is one of the reasons I stopped hanging out with said person.
I remember once I picked up dave seaman from the airport for a gig he was playing in DC and he had this cool business type case on wheels and it held all of his records. it didn't look like a record bag/box at all.

hey MH , sorry to hear bout all that..
did you eventually get paid for the gig and flight down here..?
must be a damn dj in the airmalta baggage crew cause it's happening a bit here and there, jeff mills once lost his box completely at we ended up opening the records shop 20 minutes before the gig... and he chose 30-40 records quite fast.. and left for the venue...
i seen the records suitcases your mentioning on groove mag, i tink it was carl cox in the advert, and all the coocon boys seem to have one too...
Sheridan

how did jeff make 40 records last for a couple of hours??
he usually goes through so many in just one.

time for everyone to start dj'ing with mp3's!
*ducks out of thread really quick to avoid the beat-down*
please note that i will never use anything but vinyl
not in the face! not in the face!
ow, that's my dj hand!

by playing all four tracks i think.. and around 25 of them were axis records.. loops and 4 him 4 sided playing.... ( ps . it was his 1999 peak era.. ) i remember he didnt find a kat moda.. and when he asked all the other 6 dj's or something.. and they all had a copy...
now that's dodgy... and the party was so crowded that someone fainted, got stomped on for half an hour or so and died in the venue...

I now about the Airport bag crews. A friend of me works there (Hannover and Frankfurt). He told me the English workers and some stupid Germans throw and kick packets, bags and cases arround the bag rooms and jump on it and have fun with others stuff. As i heard it i wonder whats up here in Germany. But i don't know if that is really right.
Isn't there any assurance of this Airlines about your bags and cases? But i think its not for the content.
What a shit.

maybe a good idea is put a color bomb (like on cloths in shops) inside a recordcase, and put the records in a bag inside... but when the airport and airline workers don't give a f*ck on their customers, you'll could put a nuke bomb inside the case... they don't care about :-)))
as wrote above, it's like the german post... they "loose" some letters (with money inside for a rare record) or even record-packets from britain... so i've lost force.inc80, barcode population's uss severe ep (i still hardly search for this one...), a birthday present with 4 cd's and a hoerspielmusik-record inside... and nearly 100 euros in money...

It fits nicely in the compartment above the seat-
problem with this approach is that carry-on luggage has a maximum weight defined, and 50 records are waaaay above that limit - sometimes they let you go that route but if whoever checks you in is a nitpicker, you're fucked.

don't ever, ever, ever, ever send money in envelopes. unless you're scoring weed from switzerland that is :)

@wheezer... i ever put enough paper around so that nobody could see it... i have a credit card for a year now, but you couldn't pay anywhere with it. i don't give the dates to private persons... in germany when you choose the expensive "insured letter" at the post, you are not! allowed to put money inside :-) so it's enough to send it recommended, anyway, when it got lost (like i had it 3 months ago with a registred letter) you maybe get 25 euro back... when you say there were banknotes inside, you never get money back...
but 1,5 years ago i sent 60 euros to a recordstore in spain, and it savely arrived one week later :-)

Fuck the hand lugagge rules. Always try to take two small/medium recordboxes so you can divide them, but take both "handlugagges" with you.
