Does anyone know the answer?

yes, although you might well end up getting hasseled.

me and others are thinking of setting up an Independent police monitoring website. We will have uniforms and film the police and upload the clips to a website. What do you think?

sounds like a great idea. some blogs like boingboing have posted youtubes of US cops misbehaving a few times, but nothing consistent. it's all about transparency anyway.

legally you can, although sometimes the police think otherwise.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/photographers-criminalised-as-police-abuse-antiterror-laws-1228149.html

the police seem to think they can use anti-terror laws to prevent people from photographing in public - but it's bollocks.

yeah, that's what I had in mind - I think a concerted effort to expose these bollocks, and of course the actual shit that the popos pull can only be a good thing.

There was an ePetition about it and this is the government response :

There are no legal restrictions on photography in public places. However, the law applies to photographers as it does to anybody else in a public place. So there may be situations in which the taking of photographs may cause or lead to public order situations, inflame an already tense situation, or raise security considerations. Additionally, the police may require a person to move on in order to prevent a breach of the peace, to avoid a public order situation, or for the person’s own safety or welfare, or for the safety and welfare of others.

Each situation will be different and it would be an operational matter for the police officer concerned as to what action if any should be taken in respect of those taking photographs. Anybody with a concern about a specific incident should raise the matter with the Chief Constable of the relevant force.

Which unfortunately means it's still down to the twats on the street, so they'll continue to abuse the law like they always do. The mason cunts !

They have indeed worded this in a deliberately ambiguous way. But consider a site that would host only police misconduct. If this were to actually become a matter of public discussion, I do think that public opinion would be in favor of such a site.

It'll still take balls of steel for the people operating the site, no doubt.

It would also take focus, and the ability to get your point across without being goading, gloating or insulting.

There are plenty of crustie/hunt-sab/anticapitalist types who do this sort of thing in their newsletters and websites - but your average punter (i.e. the people that you actually need to convince) is going to completely ignore this or think it's even untrue, because it is presented as part of a police-hating, anti-establishment agenda. If you don't engage those disinterested ordinary people, you are preaching to the converted.

That's the real challenge.

I took recording gear to the huge anti iraq war march back in 2003 or whenever it was... I ended up spending the day approaching policemen, in a very friendly and courteous manner and asking them how old they were. The older more confident ones would just tell you straight off the bat. The really young ones would glare and refuse to answer you and tell you to move on, so I just kept asking the question again and again. They got really angry but didn't really have any reason to have a go at you.

It wasn't big or clever. It was funny though.

A friend of mine recently got stopped and searched for taking photos of a tower block in Bromley. They didn't even give him a reason why.

Was talking to someone about how he saw the cops harrassing a couple of black kids.. including going thru their text messages on their phones.. and as they let em go one said "You can give him his gun.. er i mean phone back now".

Afterwards he asked em about the names they'd given (they were kids he worked with so he knew they were fake) and they said "What's your name that you give to the police?"... which is pretty revealing.. he said "Funnily enough, as a white guy, I've never really thought about it".

As a white guy that often smells of illegality and has some rather dodgy looking identification on him, I never thought of that either... next time my friends stop me in Hackney Downs train station, I shall be ready.
