so ur telling me a pc can run those neo geo games IDENTICAL? same vibe? dunno id like a big cabinat with all those well expensive games. Metal Slug x etc

wheezer

this emulator runs every neo geo rom there is, including some of the neo geo cd ones, which were shite anyway:

http://mamedev.org/

runs on win, mac, linux, etc. it also runs about 40000 other arcade roms.

then check your favorite torrent site for the roms, you'll also need the neogeo bios rom which you can also get from there. that's it. if you want true neo geo arcade feeling, get a good joystick to hook up as well.

not the same vibe tho is it.. i want to stand up and put 20p in and play those old wicked capcom games..

Phil a friend has a real neo geo cabinet at home, and they are fucking expensive to maintain, and the vibe is imho not as good as it would be if you have a modern 20"+ lcd, some speakers and a good quality arcade joystick. a real solid arcade joystick with the same grade microswitches as arcade ones cost about 70 quid, new. the games run just as fast, I beat metal slug 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & X. 6 is not yet available for Mame cause they encrypted that rom different.

You can send me 20p by paypal every time you play, stand up and play on emulator.

I've seen a PC running MAME mounted inside an old cabinet before, using the original joysticks/buttons etc. This was with a CRT... would be even easier these days with all the cheap LCD screens. You could pretty much gaffa tape it together.

edit: check http://arcadecontrols.com/arcade_cabinets.shtml from http://arcadecontrols.com/arcade.htm

Mame is the way - better than arcade/unit as per the already stated reasons.

Either that or hit Game up - there should be one in your area, they usually have things like megadrives/neo's/etc. Probaby more likely to get a handheld one there tho.

You can play some of the old capcom etc games now on ported versions too.

Yeah but the whole point of arcade games is to have 6 buttons and a Joystick.

Trying to play emulated games via Mame on your cursor keys and the space bar is ultimate arcade vibe killer.

You need the handy little adapter which allows you to plug acontrol pad in via usb...

I cannot find mine anywhere though.. :(

Thing that i find with MAME is that when you have 4000+ games at your disposal, you end up playing a game for 5 mins before getting fed up and playing somthing else. My attention span is obviously a lot shorter than it used to be...

more importantly, when is Streetfighter II coming out on the DS?

That's probably the only thing I want on it, apart from the Korg DS-10, Professor Leyton, and Nintendogs.

there is a GBA version which will work.

Professor leyton is completley frustrating but brilliant.

I'm quite glad it's difficult. It's so good, I don't really want it to end. Plus when you do finally work out a puzzle, it makes you feel well smart.

Also, why has no one brought me up on Nintendogs? Do people think I might actually be into that and don't want to hurt my feelings?

here in mexico everybody runs neo geo emulators on interchangable stand up units in the corner shops. you won't see a real arcade made unit anymore they are all emulators mounted on these interchangeable stand up units.

I like Nintendogs.

Last Christmas I created a dog called "Dogface" and then gave it to my mum. You have to train them to recognise their name... and so the rest of us were crying with laughter listening to her, sat alone with a DS in the next room, shouting "DOGFACE!.... DOGFACE! ... DOGFACE!" for about an hour.

like this?

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/00100/3170007101/" title="Battlestation II by wheezer256, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1194/3170007101_6c7cc74793.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Battlestation II" /></a>

believe it or not, the battlestation II was originally an amiga/nes joystick. I opened it up, removed all the guts, took apart the cheapest USB keyboard I could find, and soldered the USB keyboard controller to the directional pads and buttons of the joystick. still works like a charm, and is completely cross platform.

Isn't there a problem with keyboards where they only support a maximum of 3 keys or something pressed at any one time? Or is that only ps/2 keyboards?

wheezer
5th January 2009, 15:05
there may have been a limitation on ps/2, and back when I wired my joystick, it seemed like the keyboard controller did not like all possible x / y mappings of the two grids within the keyboard, but that might as well have been due to that particular combo having been physically impossible prior to detaching the controller from the rest of the keyboard.

there have been no occasions of one or more buttons 'locking' any others, and this puppy has been in quite a bit of 2 player arcade games. afaik the stuff like that made by xgaming uses the same principle, because a usb keyboard is likely to still work some 10 years from now

AVX23
5th January 2009, 15:21
Think it would be probably be a little better on the fingers to use a x360 plugin controller and xpadder (which allows you to map button presses to keyboard presses, meaning you can play all your mame games with a good controller, one things those arcade sticks ain't is ergonomic).

if you've not played a zelda since SNES, then the N64 ones will blow you away. "Ocarina of Time" and "Majora's Mask". Both brilliant. Think you can get em on GameCube too. And there's a new one on Wii that looked good.. but I've not really played.

Ocarina and Majora.

Portal was the only original game I've actually liked and completed in about 7 years. It was very short, short and consistently good is a good thing I think.

Portal was indeed great. Who'd have thought that a first person game would really make you think?

World Of Warcraft Phil, though I hate to utter it's name. Not my cup of tea, but fits exactly the description above. Complete fantasycore, just add crisps.

But fuck that, if you've got a PC get hold of anything Half-Life 2 related, or Bioshock or Farcry 2 blah etc. Engrosing gaming experiences.

I reckon there's not much point in listening to any of us folk that are mad into gaming Phil, I think you want the happy meal, not the Orkney Fillet Steak with creamed potatoes, gravy and peppercorn sauce ;)

Sounds like an emulator, which you already have , would suit your needs.

If you want to go for the full 'experience' and get a cab, it's probably best to start with the Neo-Geo sites :
http://www.neo-geo.com/
http://www.hardmvs.com/
ebay or whatnot.

Speaking of ebay - here's one cab which looks ideal...

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEO-GEO-CANDY-25-Cabinet-Can-Be-Used-For-JAMMA-or-MAME_W0QQitemZ120349038817QQcm dZViewItemQQimsxZ20081213?IMSf p=TL081213121005r6326

Does look like it's worthwhile to read up on the hardware 1st tho, like some have mentioned it's probably a pain to maintain and get running as you like.

If you just want to check out the scope on some games - eurogamer and IGN are both good sites to have a snoop on, there are so amny games and systems now - it's best you just dive in based on what you like cos there's so much to choose from :)

Ohh and that site yer maw's talking about - retrospec, is ace, lots of oldschool games on there.
