what is it about that underworld - born slippy track ?
that, when it comes on the jukebox in a pub, people who say they hate techno or 'doof doof' music, suddenly go, "ohhh, i LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!"

i think its utter garbage, and i listen to the song, cringeing, wondering why people have this reaction to it. it is totally 'doof doof' and embarrassment-core.

I think it's the football chant style lyrics to be honest, I bet they don't even really listen to the rest of it.

yeah. I used to quite like a couple of tracks off "dubnobasswithmyheadman" but I can't listen to them any more cos the sound of his voice reminds me of that track. it's like they retrospectively turned their back-catalogue from "dated, but ok" to "fucking shit".

the deep pan 'mix' of it well good - no vocals - just a banging epic Detroitesque choon - it's a completely different track really.

i don't mind it

but yeah, i can't really understand the anti-'doof-doof' brigade's love for it, being how the vocal bit is got out of the way fairly early on, and then it pretty much is just 'doof-doof' and very little else for at least, ooh, 37 minutes

I think I can still listen to that "thing in book" mix of dark and long. Tho it's way too long and not quite dark enough.

The only Underworld thing I like is the Micronauts remix of Bruce Lee.

Ignore the fact it says it's a Frankie Bones edit, it's just taken from a Frankie Bones mix that's all..

I like 'Mmm... Skyscraper I Love You' and that cheesy one with harmonicas they did as Lemon Interrupt. Actually I still like 'Rez' and 'Cowgirl'. But their production has always been pretty clunky hasn't it? That "progressive house" era allowed a lot of unfunky plod through...

actually, i can't be doing with rez. i'm not totally sure why, but it's way more evocative to me than born slippy of that fucking awful late '90s period of cool britannia post-feminist sheepskin-coated loaded magazine geezer bollocks mini cooper with a union jack on the roof line in the bogs in the boozer grope a fit bird in a tiny dress cheeky lad fight in a kebab shop it's alright i'm being ironic wahey!

the years 1996 to about 2001 should be wiped to make room for some less fucking shameful british pop-cultural history

I'm sure I read that they did that song as a bit of a pop at the Essex wideboy rave scene and ironically ended up creating their anthem and consequently hate the song - but everyone now expects them to play it at every gig (or did expect them - do they still do shit?)

The track is quite obviously a pisstake, I reckon. But it is also utter shite.

I saw Underworld a few years ago at Glastonbury, and they were alright. Nothing special, but didn't want me to kill anyone, either.

thepigjockey
15th December 2008, 10:00
I actually bought born slippy but don't think I have it any more. I think it was a pisstake track that people actually took too seriously (is it possible to take a track containing the lyrics LAGERLAGERLAGER SHOUTING seriously? maybe only if you're a twatface).

Anyway, I saw Underworld do one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen in a small field just outside Glastonbury festival in 1992. We didn't know they were Underworld, we just found a field on the greenfield/travellers' field part of the site with four(?) huge stacks of speakers (Experimental Soundfield I think was the name of the rig itself), several massive screens with scary glass/blood projections on them, and a two floor scaffolding construction in the middle teeming with musicians, DJ's etc. It was absolutely mental, and there was a lot of angry shouting when they finally stopped playing on the Sunday morning. Only found out it was underworld some years later.

Anyway, that was a long time ago and has fuck all to do with the stadium techno they're doing now. I enjoyed dubnobasswithmyheadman for home listening purposes but after that nothing else seemed to do the trick.

I love Underworld.

I've gone through fazes of being obsessed, to complete boredom by them

They have had some good and great albums and some utter shite ones too.

I've seen them a bunch of times over the years and i think its slightly unfair to call them stadium techno, (though they do play stadiums)
Oct 94 in London - dust brothers opened -
Nov 95 Dublin - Amazing!
Oct 99 SF - opened for Chemical Brothers - touring on a pretty lame album still was a good show
Coachella 2003? - some stadium tent - great.
this years all point west - pretty mellow decent show
i think i've seen them maybe one more live but i can't remember

Re born slippy - trainspotting ruined it, but conversely made them a fortune (probably) though one of the Kontrol DJs played a bootleg/ edit of it at this ambivalent gig in LA last year and it actually made me think it was actually a good song/track again.

let the abuse begin :)

I don't mind Born Slippy, but I probably haven't heard it as much as others. I think why it has a wider appeal is just that it is a bit catchy. And they ultimately fall into the category of bands that people like but don't like the genre they come from. Kind of the same way people hate metal, but they like Metallica's Black album.

i dont mind it, tho i saw a bit of their live set on telly a few years back andf thought it was hilariously awful.

ps 1996-2000 was brilliant fun as far as i'm concerned (erm apart from tuesdays...)

Imagine being underworld and having to perform that track over and over.

it would kill you, no wonder they split up.

I quite liked dubnobass but can't say I've had much time for them since. In fact - they make me angry, irrational I know , but when I think of underworld, I fantasise about Jeff Mills wearing a Buffalo Lodge hat and setting fire to them whilst some DJ skull track plays in the background.

the old 80ies underworld stuff was pretty good, but because of this they fall into the 'bands my mum likes' category, which always detracts a little right from the start, no matter how hard I try. and she has good taste in music.

I cannot stand born slippy either, and even rez or cowgirl did not do that much for me

I had (maybe I still have it, or did you buy it off me, tpj?) one release of emerson on novamute that was pretty spacey techno, but ended up being a bit too trancey for my tastes in the end. maybe I just wanted to remove the taint of underworld from my record collection though....
