We haven't had a good food thread on N_F for a while. So, which cuisine is the nicest? There's only one way to find out... VOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTE!

Bollocks I didn't realise there were only 7 options max... obviously have missed out Indian, English and quite a few others... but anyway.

I voted Italian.. cos I love tomatoes and I hate the orange water-balloons you get here.

But I'd probably have voted Indian cos of the amazing assault on the tastebuds. I don't have very sophisticated taste in food. I like reconstituted pork.

we had a long holiday during the summer. fantastic seafood in the south (fresh linguine and prawns), overrated tourist fare in tuscany except in the very low key lunch places, pesto in genoa and piedmont for wine, truffles, chocolate and overall the best food and drink.

we had great food in sardinia when we were there before but couldn't really afford it so ate a lot of very good cheap pizza.

There are some fab tinned tomatoes in this country if you spnd over 50p a can - if you ever see 'Jenny' chopped tomatoes they are wonderful for Italian cooking. Otherwise buy the most expensive you can find - they are generally brilliant.

I love Italian, Spanish, Indian and Creole from 'french' La Reunion. nom nom nom.

V Knid esq

Indian wins but not by a lot. Italian is great but relies so much more on good ingredients. I've been slowly getting into cooking Japanese food but that is a long journey.

As far as tinned chopped tomatoes go for italian food, my tip is always force them through a sieve and then reduce slowly. It gets rid of the seeds and tough green/yellow bits that can add bitterness.. even in the more expensive cans.

Or if you have a tin of whole unchopped tomatoes then don't break them up.. if you leave them whole while cooking then the bitter stuff inside won't get a chance to stew as much.. then break them apart right at the end and give the sauce a stir before you serve.

Freshly picked tomatoes in Italy, Spain and Greece are really the only option though!

6th November 2008, 18:34
its definately all about the proper tomatoes, lemons, garlic and oil (and wine and sausage and basil) in italian cooking.. proper mediterranean tomatoes make me want to move there more than anything.. and nice fish stuff

the best meal I ever ate was French tho.. 8 courses.. proper quiche, spit roasted lamb, lush cheese... chocolate things.. and wine

Probably not. The owners of the place also own a pizza place and there are a couple of locations and they are always right next to each other in the city. The servers and cooks are all mexicans. The patrons are white, mostly. I do know what you are talking about when you see tons of mexicans in the place. There is an Indian place I found that is always filled with Indians. I am usually the only white person in there. Real authentic.

it does work cos in the supermarket today there were clementines or satsumas. they were both the same price but only one smelled citrusy. so I got that one and it tasted great.

I made a typical fennel risotto today with fresh basil and it worked really well. Cos it's autumn I baked two baby pumpkins with butter and filled em with the risotto. I've never had pumpkin just baked with butter, salt and pepper before and it overshadowed the risotto. pumpkin rocks!

I had one of the best meals I've ever had in France - they did a tahli kind of platter with 10 vegetable pots = each of the side dishes off the meat dishes + a mold of rice and white wine sauce.

That said 99% of french vegetarian cooking is shockingly inedible bland shite that involves putting cheese on overcooked vegetables.

we ate a lot of mexican food in san francisco. they had all kinds, from street food to traditional home cooked to modern mexican. when we came to the uk there was nothing so we learned how to make some of the staples ourselves. I'm a bit worried. Now that I've tasted real Mexican food, I feel like I cannot eat Mexican food ever again in Europe. I've heard good things about this joint though, maybe I'll try it some time. There is a great burrito stand on Leather Lane btw, called Daddy Donkey - they even have a website: http://www.daddydonkey.co.uk/ That's a lot closer to Mexican street food than most other things I've tasted. Although the form factor (burritos that large) apparently isn't Mexican either, the contents definitely are.

Spandex, next time I see you I will make you eat some weisswurst with sweet mustard, pretzel and bavarian weiss bier. The shit you're talking about I'm not down with either, but that is a regional type of cuisine that just isn't all that great. Imho the best stuff is to be got from the South (Jukka will probably disagree). Döner kebab is a good German staple though.

Also, German food IN FRANCE? How about having fish'n'chips in fucking Karachi?

Speaking of Mexican and Turkish food, Gunjack took me to this street joint in Mexico City where I had Tacos al Pastor, which is the Mexican version of döner kebab. Chicken or pork, marinated over one or two days with a blend of different spices and herbs such as adobo, then slowly cooked on a vertical rotisserie called a Trompo.

I had it with pineapple, pico de gaillo, guacamole and a rocket-fuel spicy peanut salsa. Amazing.

no bro, you remember wrong they are 5 pesos a taco thats about 25 pence....

and yea al pastor is pork. don't ask me what part.

i voted thai food because it's like the mexican food of asia. i am SOOOOO sick of mexican food. weezer took my wife, daughter and i out to eat and my wife ordered the CURRY if that tells you anything. mexican food is devine especially here in the capital, there is nothing like it anywhere else, it gets distorted like with all import foods. but yea you can get real sick of tacos. ENCHILADAS however never don't seem to tire out my tastebuds as fast as my intestine.

anyway i love CURRY, thai curry, punjab, japanese curry WHATEVER, but japanese curry is very distinct from the indian and thai variations. i thought this might be an interesting read for some of you:

http://citizenhistorian.com/2007/07/31/japanese-curry-navy/

if you have never tried japanese curry rice i suggest you do because it is gooooooooood. and is quite a different experience from the curries more common to you folks in the UK etc.

oh yea another random food memory

i used to go to a dirty stand in a vacant lot in bali and get 10 sticks of SATE KAMBIN, soup and rice for about 10 cents US or a peso mexicano....

that was ten sticks of tasty goat meat, goat fat soup, rice and falvor water all for a DIME!!!!!!!!!!! and i will be damned if they didnt use a bit of coconut milk and green curry etc in the soup. THAT SHIT SAVED ME AFTER ARRIVING ON THE ISLAND BROKE (told the story on here a while back)

where are the African countries on this list?

I went to an awesome African restaurant in Copenhagen a few months ago

We had sacks to sit on around a low table and you ate using this spongey bread stuff as a kind of grabber. The meat and vegetable mix was poured over the bread leaving just enough at the side to tear off and grab the food with, then you whack it all in your gob. Felt reet primitive but was tasty as fuck

Had some killer coffee afterwards too. I was awake for days

There's a great Ethiopian restaurant on Cold Harbour Lane in Brixton that serves food like that.

sadly none of you will ever have the chance to try this, unless you visit arbroath, which let's face it you won't

scotland still has this rep for being all about shit food, but in the last 10 years there has beeen a small revolution, especially in the highlands. they used to export all the amazing local produce (excellent seafood, beef, venison, cheeses etc) and import frozen cack for the locals to eat

these days you can get good local stuff pretty much everywhere. if you go to the right places.

What has the strength of the ale got to do with anything - if it tastes good, it tastes good. Plus ale tends to be weaker than lager beers, it's not the same as drinking a low strength lager.

and as for your "opinion" bro, yes you have every right to your opinion based on an untrue assumption.

here lemme make this ALOT clearer:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kebab

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_cuisine

"Soy sauce
Soy sauce is not usually poured over most foods at the table; a dipping dish is usually provided. Soy sauce is, however, meant to be poured directly onto tofu and grated daikon dishes. In particular, soy sauce should never be poured onto rice or soup. Noodles are slurped."

"The word kabab (کباب) is ultimately from Arabic and originally meant fried meat, not grilled meat.[1] The Arabic word possibly derives from Aramaic כבבא kabbābā, which probably has its origins in Akkadian kabābu meaning "to burn, char".[2] In the 14th century, kebab is defined to be synonymous with tabahajah, a Persian word for a dish of fried meat pieces. The Persian word was considered more high-toned in the medieval period, and as a result, kebab was used infrequently in Arabic books of that time. Only in the Turkish period, did kebab gain its current meaning of shish kebab, whereas earlier shiwa` شواء had been the Arabic word for grilled meat. Kebab still retains its original meaning in the names for stew-like dishes such as tas kebab (bowl kebab).[1] Similarly, kebab halla is an Egyptian dish of stewed beef and onions."

every morning i wake up frustrated because the only options for breakfast are enchiladas, tacos, tamales or tortas and they are all pretty much the same fucking shit.

Does that mean I could go and open a great British greasy spoon café in Mexico City selling egg, beans and chips and people would come flocking to try these exotic delights?

well knid eggs beans and papas fritas(chips) are already breakfast staples here on the same plate as enchiladas or whatever. they just put green sauce all over it.

there is a kebab/felafel shop here that does well on the "exotic delight" factor and a snobby "asian cuisine" place that sells the worst, stingiest curry ever for what most people make in a day here....

maybe HAGGIS etc? mexicans already eat tripas(guts) etc
