Here's a video-

Did any of you lot go to DiY parties? I was only at one:

Not one of their famous free do's. I was at Lechlade free festy and I know DiY were too, but I missed seeing/hearing them 'cos I wasn't really into that sound at the time.

Here's someone else's account of the DiY New Years Eve 92/3 on my blog. My mates made it to this one but I didn't, there's a link to a set from that night too:

Another blog, The Love Unlimited, has some stuff on DiY too: a mix from Simon DK (at Bounce in Nottingham) and a Derrick Carter mix from a night DiY did at the Marcus Garvey Centre in Nottingham:

The acid remix of a Gaye Bikers on Acid tune in the video might interest you lot even if nothing else about this thread does :) I'd love to get hold of it but I think it's only available on CD, at least according to discogs...

I went once or twice to Spectrum nights in Oxford which were Jack and DK I think... listened to LOADS of DiY tapes in 91-92... never went to a proper free rave with them tho - missed my lift to Lechlade :(

Never went to any of the freebies :/ Used to go to Bounce in Nottingham... at Venus, then the Dance Factory.. and an afterparty at SquareDance once.. tho memories of that are confused to say the least.

My memory of Bounce is total cartoon lovedup mentalism (tho I didn't take them kind of drugs so much)... incredible atmosphere and total insanity and decadence. It wasn't all dingy like techno clubs, it was all whirling colourful lights and people wandering round with baskets, giving everyone tropical fruit :) I remember a few regulars too.. like a bloke we used to call "speedfreak" who couldn't work his face or any of his other muscles but used to twitch happily in a corner and occasionally ask people "ddoooyooowannnabuynnneeessschh pp.. schppeeeed???"

Also went to a couple of Sponges in Leicester (DiY and Beef) which were fucking great... 1993-94 I think.. and the place went fucking BATSHIT when they played Muzik Xpress :)

Proper unpretentious insane parties. Good times.

Oh, I went to one (or two?) at the Garvey.. dunno if it was when Derrick Carter was there. I wasn't really in a position to say :)

the free parties were always super amazing
they had an amazing system they used early 90s.. it might have been rob lights's.. all the tunes sounded different to how youd heard them before
i remember one time geeking at the eq setting they had the mids were cut there were two big boosts in the bass and one at the top
basically the basslines sounded turbo distorted in a rounded way
lots of whooping from the dancers which id never encountered before
in fact the whole music policy and atmosphere took some getting used to after spiral vibe
my fave tape is dk at castle morton.. sueno latino going up and down in pitch.. fucked

I got the chance to hear some DiY DJ's playing on their original rig this summer and it sounded great. I'm not much of a sound geek myself, but I actually recognised the sound. Something like you said, to do with the bass.

As soon as I heard it I realised it was the old one, and then someone (who didn't know what they were talking about) told me it wasn't. Then someone else, who knows that lot, told me it definitely was.

Apparently DiY sold it to someone when they were skint, and that someone lends it back to them for do's sometimes.
