Follow on from my rant, I'd thought I'd see what the Erutufoners think...
So when it comes to computers which OS/system do you prefer...?

different oses for different jobs, I like windows for my desktop and linux for my servers, at least smallscale web- & emailservers

well, with the lack of alternatives i voted for windows. i'm running xp now and it's not even bad once you have disabled all the unneeded crap and spy tools (isn't it funny - within every software you have to enable special features when you want to use them - in windows it's vice versa).
i shouldn't have done that fucking online-update though. right in the middle it stopped telling me i got no register number and since then everything flies by snailspeed. and my soundstuff doesn't work properly anymore. hrmpff.
btw anyone got experiences with partitioning ntsc? i thought i part my hd and make one partition for sound only and one for all the other stuff. so i got me partition magic, but it's not the newest version (6.0) and all this stuff is greek to me. any other software that is of easier use?

ho ho, are you sure you don't wanna change your mind - this exactly what I was getting at - I mean this doesn't sound like a great product endorsement to me...

whatever happened to os/2?

hmm amble you probably mean ntfs, not ntsc, right? partition magic is really the only one I've used so far, though I last used 7.
start the graphical interface and resize your partitions accordingly, reboot, done. never really had any problems with that...

correction, repartition the hard drive with the os already installed, that is the question here.
mac os x has some nifty features like zeroconf that intrigue me, but the old mac oses sucked so hard that it'll prolly still take a while for me to seriously try os x out... hmm lessee what happens when my flatmate gets his ibook...

I think that maybe they all suck, the difference comes in where and just how hard the sucking is... Something went badly wrong with 'puters around the 90s... maybe its just a legacy of the mass market... that things have to suck...
Macintosh was supercool in 80s - no one could touch them - then from 90s to-date general levels of sucking, although I think OS X is the bomb, I'm hoping its gonna be big turning point, although should write server edition to run on none Macintosh hardware...
Windows didn't really turn up until 90s and has pretty much consistently sucked the big one throughout that period. Windows Sucks big time, however bad Mac gets Windows always sucks longer and harder... (BTW: Its worth noting that this is the one subject where I'm totally irrational - its no good arguing with me, Windows Sucks - yeap I said it again. Macintosh rulez... heh heh heh heh... Wanting to own a PC is like wanting to own shitty car, like Trabant... :-)

grobe you're truly a victim of macs clever product marketing! "..buy a macintosh and become sophisticated.." or some nebulous message like that. i think that's pretty much how they like to see it.
but at least you admit that you are.;)
btw i nearly bought a Trabant once. a military jeep cabrio in army colours! would have looked too cool but didn't really have the space for it and paying taxes, insurance and gas is maybe a bit too much for a joke. i really love the name Trabant though - means Begleiter (companion).
wheezer: ntfs of course yes. mixing it all up. i'll try to get partion magic 7 then (was doing exactly what you suggested but it didn't work in 6 - there was no winXp option either so i guess that's the reason).

if you have enough money to waste some of it for a stylish look, proprietary hardware, limited freedom of choice and have a faible for exorbitant prices (sometimes double prices for pieces of hardware identical to pc) - go for a mac, we won't stop you... lol

apple isnt that expensive anymore. and os x is defently better as windows. but well, the end product is important. not the way u have made it

slowly but surely mac are making their machines 'upgradeable'....
but i prefer the price of a pc, and it's almost infinite upgradeablity..

yes, for example buy an ati graphics card - the same model from a mac dealer costs 150-200€ more... but you cannot insert the technically identical pc model in your mac unless you try to hack the bios which is said to be successful in 50% of attempts - if you're not successful the card is junk. when i read this i really wondered what the companies think of mac users - do they assume people who buy these expensive computers are stupid (or infinitely rich) enough to pay double the price for the same piece of hardware pc user can get for half of it?

the only advantage left of a mac nowadays lies in some metaphysical reasons i guess... :D hey grobe, anything to add? ;)

yeah but if you get paid £x an hour for work. And on a Mac you get more done cos you dont have to fiddle around with the fucker all the time then a Mac can actually be more "cost effective" if not actually cheaper inretail price. studies have been done at universities and shit and macs are actually "cheaper" if you factor this in.

well, you don't have to "fiddle around" that much when the amount of soft- and hardware you can choose from is that limited and partly monopolised - that way configuration problems are more or less unlikely, yes. but i'd still prefer a cheap buy and freedom of configuration.
btw, the same type of studies are published regularly to prove that linux is not cheaper than windows... lol

i'm runnin xp on my new pc lappy, predominantly for sound, i've had maybe 3 crashes in 3 months. it runs better than any machine i've ever used (incl macs). i don't think it really matters wot os U use these days, they all seem pretty stable.

You know, OS X is actually built on top of a UNIX/BSD kernel, which is why it's so stable.
I use UNIX/BSD; Linux; Windows, but don't have much experience with Macs (too expensive), but I do have to say, Windows is getting a lot better. So long as you know what you are doing with Windows, don't play around with it if you don't really know what you are doing with it, then it works fine, at least in the latest incarnations. XP is ugly, full of spyware, but it's pretty much solid as a rock for the general user.
Most windows problems are actually caused by third party drivers, and again, this is being sorted out now.
But the one thing Windows has got going for it: Choice of software. If you run windows, you know that any type of software you want to run, you'll find a solution for your OS. Same cannot be said for Mac OS or even Linux.

I use Windows most of the time as I like playing games and stuff. However if I was to do any sort of serious work I'd prefer a good old Ultra Sparc with this massive monitors that doubled the ara you could see at once.

using windows is a totally pragmatic decision indeed. computers are tools and i can do without operating system eyecandy on screen - and a stylish tower but you can buy it for pcs as well if you want. i don't care about m$' attempts to spy on users as long as i know how to disable it. of course the way they act isn't good style but what do you expect from one of the biggest companies in the world? it's just the reckless capitalist way all companies go. macs are definitely not more 'ethical' or so... ;)

99% of computer and electronic equipment is made in sweatshops with workers on less than the equivlent of 50 UScents an hour, anyway.
Using computers is just as 'unethical' as buying a pair of Nike trainers.

word ischo. I actually have two PC's (cos they're cheaper). However if I had the money I'd buy a Mac cos I prefer using them. Then I'd have both - probably the ideal scenario. From experience I think it's true that most Mac users spend more time using apps and less time fiddling with their computer IMO.

No no its not true, every Apple Macintosh is made by being rolled between the thighs of Steve Jobs's virgin daughters... this is why they are soo expensive... fortunately the hippy commune values on Apple's Coppurtino campus means that Jobs has hundreds of wives and many thousands of daughters... although Jobs admitted in a recent interview that it was an uphill battle to keep them away from the legions of randy software engineers...

well today we started a new term at school with my last unix class, that has combined c and c+-+- in a unix environment.
unix is cool, and after enough time i forget the in depth control it has....
but the bad thing about this stupid class is that we have to write all of our code in the [vi] editor, which sucks really bad....

My favorite System/OS is of course LINUX. I hate unstable systems like windows. But I hope that in the future more people understand that an open-source-system have more advantages.

I dont think windoze sucks that bad, in fact its monopoly has almost helped open source. You need a common platform to develop on. I agree with wheezer - linux for servers. I think the mac has lost some of its integrity with osx, eye candy gets in the way of HCI, and from what I've heard they continually lock down the os with each new incarnation, but windows has never been easier to hack. I like to work with an interface that I can tailor to suit my individual needs.
