I know people will say this should go in the techie section, but not as many people seem to read that section.
Could people post a list of their top 5 synths.
its for a project I am working on.
cheers

202 and mini moog - nice. You know Callum - do you know Tudor too. Him and Charlie had a mad rig - all analoge, all patch leaded together, 202, 101, 808 mini-moog etc
It was great, especially when the mini-moog broke and made the best noises until you hit it.

Did some mention RZ-1.......
Quality machine !!!!! 1mb sampling capacity was a revolution in its day....me thinks Steve Poindexter of Dance Mania fame used to do all his tracks on that.....just enough memory to to fit WORK / DAT vox + some percussion..........sweet simplicity.
My partner in crime used to live sets on that thing man....certainly braver than me !!!!

I like the sound of the roland sh-5. Those bandpass filters are wonderful.

Roland SH-09 is brilliant in a bassy-monosynth kind of way. With the downtuned sub-oscillator, you can really get some fatness out of it.

Why do people love the 101 so much?
I've never thought it sounded that great. Bit thin at times. Am I missing something?

or use both ;)
analogues (you're not american, emef) rock it down the deep end, but digitals have their own character, and can be used to great effect to.

some once said to me they loved the analogue synths in one of my trax
didnt have the heart to tell him it was a dx7 on the track :D
Loz
23rd October 2004, 22:35
dx7 is great, if you can programme it.
I once read that over 2/3s of the DX-7 returned to Yamaha for repairs still had all of their default patches on. People hadn't changed anything.
emef
23rd October 2004, 22:38
i really dont get why people say dx7s are hard to programme
theyre not at all imo
fuckin nord modular though is a bitch, that thing hates me, im shit at it

never played with one myself
I'm with you on the nord, though. So far I have only managed to get 3 sounds out of it that I was expecting. Methinks I need to read up on synthersis theory.

The Nord is easy, what a beast tho - you just have to be careful with the dials - great machines, I'd like a full rack of them.
Although the 101 can be a bit on the thin side, you can still get some great sounds out of it, nice action as well.

I wanna hear some samples of the pro one. Sounds that aren't leads. More ambitious stuff. Also, is nord better than Reaktor with a good soundcard? Other than saving cpu and all that junk?
Loz
24th October 2004, 12:48
the nord doesn't need a PC to play
that's the big bonus

In this order:-
Nord Modular
Yamaha V50 (4op FM workstation thing from the late 80s)
Roland SH101
Kawai K1r
Korg MS10
Probably cos these are some of the synths I own. I expect I'd like different synths if I'd owned them. Things I'd have liked to have owned... A Waldorf of some sort... A sampler of some sort... one of the Roland Digital/Analog hybrid things... an MS20.
