View Full Version : Tea or Coffee?

I was thinking today how fantastic tea is, we requisitioned the company tea pot today and had a good ole tea sesh today - can't beat tea made properly in the pot, 'specially the second cup... :-)

So what do you prefer tea or coffee...

Mine's tea you get so much more variety...

Assam, Lapsang, Chai, Earl Grey... :-)

that's a tough one but i tend to rate tea a bit higher. i'm just drinking one right now (green tea with maracuja - yam yam). as grobelaar pointed out there's so much variety, so much to try out. but only real tea with leaves inside, not that junk in these little bags that they sweep from the ground.

coffey is also ok though, depends on the situation. i like to have tea in the morning and coffey to keep me wake at night (if i have to).

I love the taste of the coffee but it starts a battle in my stomach. so now I only drink coffee if I go out for a nice dinner. and also coffee only works on me for about 15 minutes then I crash and feel horrible. I guess that is from all my abuses of amphetimines when I was younger.

Sounds doj if you ask me - one of those companies did a teapot with a sealable chamber, so you put the plunger down to cut the tea off from the rest of the pot and hence stop the brewing... I think the downside was it took up half the pot... its all pointless if you ask me, if you're going to be into tea, then learn to make tea. Don't fanny about with gimmicks, you don't need - a good tea pot and a tea strainer is all that's needed to make the freshest loose leave tea...

For those forced to brew in the cup, another good tip is to warm your mug first (like you would the pot) and then pour about a half an inch of boiling water in bottom and swill the teabag around to wake up the leaves, and ensure that the bag hasn't turned into a big air balloon - no good for getting a good brew...

But have you seen how much tea costs in the States? I guess the US government is still pissed off about the Boston Tea Party so that's why they slap so much bloody tax on it. $5 for 40 tea bags?! What's that all abaht?!

Yeah, but when you use smoke a spliff with tobacco, it doesn't matter, because you are smoking and the THC passes to your blood stream via the lungs (definitely no fat required)...

When you eat it, don't know the exact science, but I think fat is not only good for letting THC bond to them, they are also particularly good at then depositing themselves in your bloodstream (you only have to look at the amount of overweight people around the place for evidence of that...

The tea sound disgusting (tea with butter!!!!), you'd be better making a hot chocolate, with some creamy rmilk, simply grind/chop/grate the hash into a fine powder, and then let the milk simmer (do not boil) slowly for 10mins, then use it to make hot chocolate, or any other milky drink (tea shouldn't be too milky unless you drink like my Italian colleague - bloody philistines)

Gold Top is a term for extra fat milk - they take the cream that is skimmed off, skimmed and semi-skimmed milk and add it to normal milk to make gold top - its extra creamy milk basically, it was always popular on Breakfast and hence has been rebrand in Breakfast Milk in the supermarket. Back in the day when it was the mode in the UK to have a man drive around in an electric milk cart and deliver pints of milk to the door, there was, different types of milk, determined by what sort of foil top they had on them:

Red Top: Skimmed
Blue Top: Semi-Skimmed
Silver Top: Normal
Gold Top: Extra Fat Bastard

In cold weather, the cream would float to the top, so you could have the creamy milk on your cornflakes, leaving you some nice semi-skimmed milk for your tea... (milk that is too creamy, tinges the taste of the tea)

It's getting quite eccentric here in the UK too, but in my campaign to throw off the yolk of modern living and spurn the values that are nowt but shackles for the modern wage slave (these days poeple think you are a good cook if you boil up some ready-made fresh pasta and stick a jar of cheap Italian style tomato sauce on top), damn its time to start doing things properly... the British way... :-)

To quote the venerable and supremely wise Mr Miyagi

"Daniel-san, must talk. Man walk on road. Walk left side, safe. Walk right side, safe. Walk down middle, sooner or later, get squished just like grape. Same here. You karate do "yes," or karate do "no." You karate do "guess so," get squished just like grape."

Yet another subject of mine and Billy's tea analysis. It seems that so many people are into the instant hit that the whole tradition of tea has taken a back seat. Hardly anyone uses a teapot anymore, just a bag in a mug and away you go... I'm as much to blame for that but the whole ritual of tea should be re-kindled and the pot re-introduced to British tea drinking. Tea is the best, but it tastes so much better out of a pot. A whole British cultural tradition is in danger of ebbing away into the wasteland. Tea is still a mainstay of British culture but the process of making it is being lost by the modern instant hit idea. Dust off, buy or steal a teapot and stick a finger up at the daily grind and sit back and watch it brew...

This all sounds like smoking science to me - I think hash burns at that temperature - which handly makes it ideal for mixing with coke or MDMA as it means the other coke or mdma evaporates, before it can burn - if it burns then you lose most of it...

But that's by the by, the most effective way of taking cannabis is to eat it...

Eating skunk and weed will just get you stoned as normal

Eating hash/resin will if enough is eaten, cause you to hallucinate, I could be wrong, but no one knows why, yet.

I do a nice range in 3 weed flapjack, made with a mix of Skunk, weed and hash, perfect with a nice cup of Rosie Lee...

On the Fair Trade Tea front, I think the really good thing is that there is a significant difference in taste too...

Don't get me wrong, I would still buy Fair Trade even if there wasn't, but perhaps that the growers are getting a good deal, shows through in the quality...

I find it funny the whole organic food type choice, some people say oh I don't bother with such and such organic food because it doesn't taste any different from the normal stuff.

That's not the point, some organic food has an obvious taste improvement, others don't. But by buying organic you are supporting a way of growing food that is better for us and the environment, its not about taste (once again that instant hit culture)...

Sorry if this is a bit preachy, but this seems to be a point lost on a lot of people... maybe I should join a food and drink forum :-)

The co-op tea tastes easily as good as any of the big name teas, plus its only a quid for 80 bags, although the other own brand ones are nasty. I mean I got a pack of cheap tea from Asda once and when it was made it was GREY! I know very little about the mechanics of tea, but I know damn well that it shouldn't be grey! Not sure about tea being tainted with weed/skunk or whatever, tea and weed go together but shoud never be mixed together in my book, its a desecration of the sacred tea. But a nice cup of tea and a spliff or hash cake is just heaven, mmmmmmmmm..........

tea is indeed significant to the british.
in fact the timing of this thread by grobelaar is interesting - it was posted just after the rather unpleasant anti-phil things on monday.
its is a cliche and therefore broadly true that we brits turn to tea in times of crisis.
after the first series of Big Brother they did a programme about all the international series and compared behaviour - the spanish were interesting in that they rebelled against BB - but they did a montage of all the times tea making was used as a diversionary or calming or bonding activity by the Uk contingent and it was a LOT.

good - im in favour of this tea in a pot movement. i think it should have a name. but im not sure about the pot in tea in a pot element.

I found the George Orwell essay on tea and he reckons that you should drink it from a teapot and it should be Indian or Ceylonese tea. He then goes on to explain 11 points that go to making the perfect cuppa. I still wanna know how come us Brits rely on tea so much, anyone got any idea why its so important to us?

Dave mate, you'll have to read this Orwell article on tea and I swear you'll be stood there, finger pointing at me, shouting, 'I told you so!' All his points to making the perfect cuppa reckon it should be orange and served in a pot, but one thing you won't agree with is that he says you should drink it without milk. Sorry George, I'll have to disagree with you on that one...
As for the grey tea, it was Asda's 'smartprice' tea so I guess I shoulda known better.

Tea without milk is the bomb, but not sainsburys red label or any of those builders teas, they need milk. Po-Leng is my favourite.

Nah! Maybe in the past but not now, I think that losing the whole tea ritual with the pot and all is a direct indication as to how uncivilised we've become rather than us trying to be civilised. Bring back the teapot!

living in japan, tea is more of a ritual than a drink.... but i still cant enjoy water boiled with grass. it just isnt good for me. i suppose being raised with cola in the fridge didnt help. i just dont understand how the whole british world stops to drink some hot grass tasting water. eeeeeeewwwww.

Grobelaar, you shit! I spent my whole lunch hour trying to find that essay in the library and you go and slap a link on the forum in no time, AND with a picture of old Mr. Orwell himself!
Good effort though, how the hell did you find it?

What I want is a proper cup of coffee
Made in a proper cup or coffee pot
I may be off my dot
But I want a cup of coffee in a proper coffee pot
Tin coffie pots, and iron coffee pots
They're no use to me
so if I cant have a proper cup of coffee in a proper cup or coffee pot..

I'll have a cup of tea.

Mad thread love to all the caffine heads,

thank you for raising the tone after the tea / library soft porn DG
im enjoying a green tea with jasmine right now...

also on a historical note, asian cultures tradtionally purified drinking water through boiling it with infusions = tea
northern cultures purified their water by brewing ale, etc

this has lead to increased alcohol tolerance in northern europeans over the japanese and chinese...

UK's history with tea is because of the explorers bringing back commodities from the countries they 'discovered', many of which became part of the british empire due to 'trade' in those commodities. im not sure when tea was first introduced... then it becomes fashionable and everyone has to have it , it filters down to all classes of society eventually.

There is the stimulant side of tea to consider, which may be a significant factor in it becoming popular and then an ingrained part of many cultures - most of us talk about not being able to function properly without that morning cuppa (tea or coffee)...

Much in the same way that we know out Scottish friends can't function without their Buckfast ho ho... :-)

Do you ever have hot chocolate with a dash of brandy or dark rum in it - magnificent, make sure its got lots of froth on - stops the alcohol vapour from escaping - much like an Irish coffee (oh no, I said it, I'm turning to the darkside (oh well I feel the coffee drinkers have been a bit left out :-)

I dont approv of the use of the word Tea in fruit Teas, as there is no Tea in it. they should be called fruit infusions... but then again I normally say fruit teas, as I am lazy.
Pepper Mint Infusions are nice..

I haven't tried that, but it sounds rather delicious.... I know that there is a bottle of Brandy and two bottles of Trnidadian Dark Rum in the drinks cabinet - I feel a choc-tastic experiment coming on...thanx Grobelaar :)

I do have brandy in my Lemon Tea when I'm feeling as sick as a dog - but I'm sure that I put too much in - it blows my flipping socks off every time...still, it makes me sweat the illness outta my body like a mad woman.....

I have a friend who feels the same way - he cannot understand why I refer to lemon tea as 'tea' - he thinks it's disgusting anyway - I guess it's not what you'd call 'real' lemon tea - it's neither made with black tea or a slice of lemon - it's instant stuff, but boy I love it...

Just to add to the debate/vote - and maybe to rock the traditional boat - I really don't like Earl Grey tea... two of my best freinds really do the whole tea thing - Earl Grey, Breakfast Tea etc... it's wasted on me!!!! The worst thing I did to earl Grey was have it with sugar - it tasted putrid....

One love. One board. One tea.
Peace.

its is a cliche and therefore broadly true that we brits turn to tea in times of crisis.
after the first series of Big Brother they did a programme about all the international series and compared behaviour - the spanish were interesting in that they rebelled against BB - but they did a montage of all the times tea making was used as a diversionary or calming or bonding activity by the Uk contingent and it was a LOT.

good - im in favour of this tea in a pot movement. i think it should have a name. but im not sure about the pot in tea in a pot element.

I like what you said about turning to tea in a time of crisis. I think that is true. I have always found tea to be so calming and help you focus. not sure if you have seen this movie but there is a sceen in the film 'the shipping news' where kevin spacey is upset at the death of a family member and he is sitting on the couch drinking coffee and nibbling on chips. his aunt comes in the room and sees that he is drinking coffee and tells him she will put on a pot of tea. he declines and she sharply quips back "that stuff you have there wont do you any good. you need some tea, it will help keep you going in a time like this'.

I also liked what cristian said about putting a pot on when friends are over. I have always found sharing tea with friends as a real communal action.
