View Full Version : lidl = male winehouse

all these mainstream radio programmes are playing jamie lidell's new single (which i'm a bit underwhelmed by) and touting him as the male amy winehouse, as if he's some sort of johnny-come-lately pop-soul chancer. it's a bit weird. almost as weird as the time i saw that picture in heat of cristian with shaznay lewis

Watched a documentary about the Mighty Boosh the other day. Was only mildly interesting... but there was one bit that made us properly piss ourselves.. they were interviewing Jo Whiley and she was saying how the Boosh are massively into their music (Jo's everso sharp) and at one point she said, slightly incredulously, "They probably know more about music than ME!".
I tried to conceive of someone knowing more about music than Jo Whiley but it put too much strain on my imagination and I had to stop for a nap.

I dunno, maybe if all you do is write bonkers songs maybe writing something commercial is a like a weird departure.
Cant blame him after winehouse though. Needs a crack addiction but.
Loz
29th March 2008, 22:04
I thought that Multiply was his weird departure. I really like that album, I think it's a really good solid album, but I hope that's not just where he's going to stay, because he's capable of so much more.
I feel for him a bit, though. Loads of people are ripping off his act now, making it seem slightly less special. And if you're a musician who has to keep moving on, he might be getting bored of the same live shows, trying to find something new to do, a new spin on it.
I'm hoping that it's a bit like a reverse-radiohead. Whereas they went all weird and electronic, then came back with a brilliant rock album with everything they'd learnt from their electronic experiments, maybe Jamie will drop an absolute bomb of a record in a couple of years, taking what he's learn from this side-step into the mainstream, link it up with the weird electronic shit, and come up with something amazing.

right, i don't mind him going after commercial success. i don't mind him carrying on in the same vein as mulitply, if he'd keep the quality up. even if he just wants to be a straight singer now, and leave all the wonk behind, i don't care. but little bit of feel good is middle-aged coffee table bollocks, and from what i've read and heard from a few places, the rest of the album isn't much better

I liked Multiply. Sure, it was straight song writing, and sure, it sounded a lot like people had done before it, but it had some great tracks on it.
the only downside is that Vibert's remix of A Little Bit More ruined the original for me.

.. havnt posted here for a while.. but knew this was the place to share some lidell-grief over the new single..
its so bland. its so forgettable.. and unconvincing.. its a Winehouse.. no,.. a joss-stone outtake.
and his voice sounds tired. lacking the sweet edge.
the mad touring has probably finally taken its toll.
what the fuck is he doing.
at least make a quality pop soul record man. multiply was just that a points.it had some proper classic songs on it.
i have a bad feeling that this tour is going to be so sterile .. with a bunch of l.a. session cunts smoothing everything out.
really depressing.
he's got so much talent and scope.. but it seems like a marketing man is telling him what to do.. and a marketing man with no fucking vision or balls at that.
has anyone heard the album in full yet?

what he said.
Over about a 13 month period I saw Lidel live 3 times (Coachella, opening for Beck and in LA) and missed him twice at the troubadour and at the ghetty.
i think he's an awesome performer, singer and musician. He should DEFINITELY make another Supercollider album- that would be sooo dope.

He's on Channel 4 right now - one of those big Four Music expose jobbies. Lots of snippets of videos and songs (still the same quirky Jamie in the videos) - plus overly post processed snippets of him and Mocky in LA.
Definitely hitting the big time. i don't know I'm not feeling the sound that much. But he always said he never wants his live shows to be like his album, so much as this album might be much more commercial I'm sure he's ready and waiting to subvert.
